Oh, come on, xXxSSJsEpHiRoTh989544xXx is the best name EVER.
Ow, my brain.

What sad is that I know that's no exaggeration. In fact, I'll bet I've seen that exact name somewhere before.

What the fuck does "MLG" even mean?
Major league gamer?

Anyway, I like these, but I do not take kindly to being told what to do/how to do something, so I'm going to dedicate my next screenname: "xxmaxassassinxx92MLGidfu(khitlern00b" to you.
Majore League Gaming. Its a tournament. Supposedly really big where you can win money and such.

A room filled with greasy kids that actually left there rooms to meet other greasy kids.

You'd be suprised at how many original and good names exist. To me, if you can't put in the effort to search for a proper name then it's just rude to other players. A slightly cursory complaint, but a complaint it is.

Rule: If it took you less time to think of your name than it does to type it, you lose.
That's not nessacarily true. I've been using the same name for 3 years and I never think about it until, somebody else has it.

Anyone who uses a name that clearly indicates they are either male or female should get bonus points. COME ON, people! Humans are always denoted as either male or female in proper English.

You are a psychic...much of this matches a complaint I made in the past (Not here).

Items you may wish to consider:

- Any name pertaining ill will toward ?noobs? (Noobslayer). EVERYONE is a noob in SOMEONE?S eyes.
- Any of the following Non-Words: Crzy, Azn (Asian), Boi, and Grl/Grrl. Would it kill you to use some more vowels? Your name isn?t going to overload the servers!
- And dammit, people. SPELLING, okay? Okay.

If your GT is MegaAssassin98, people will figure out that you are young and will probably insult you for it. Also, you will probably not be taken seriously at all.
Damnnit, I've broken one of the commandments already, mine is Eagle Est1986 but I'm 22, so is that ok? Although, I suppose if I still have that gamertag in ten years time, people are gonna be a little "wtf, chu old!".

No, dont make rules, let people do what they want - it makes it so easy to separate the mature gamers from the rest at just a glance.

Some of those words have specific subcultural meanings.

"Boi" implies a certain general kind of gendered behavior (kind of a softer masculinity) for people in various LGBT subcultures.

"Grrl" (from "riot grrl") can imply aggressive, punky feminism.

"Azn" says that the person using it isn't just Asian, but likely part of a particular American subculture of young people of Asian descent -- folks who have assimilated into the local culture but retain a certain kind of (often racialist) pride in their ethnic identity. "Azn" implies a certain specific range of tastes in fashion, music, &c. that "Asian" or "Asian-American" do not.

That's the thing that makes them useful for Internet-names and "gamertags" in the first place: communicating a bunch of shit about your identity in just a few characters of text. Labels like this can become rather watered-down over time, of course, and lose their utility -- especially as more people who don't get their context start using them for stuff.

People with clan tags in their Gamertags. What happens when they leave the clan?
On old FPS servers, you could call yourself whatever you wanted and change it all the time. Names weren't locked to specific accounts or whatever.

On XBox Live, you can change your name for about $10. Annoying but not the end of the world.

I find that difficult and inane gamer tags are most annoying for me in "Guild Wars." I'll only try and add Xxninjaassassin69xX to the group once. When the join request invariably fails, I give up and begin sending evil thoughts their way. Names like that are prime indicators of a vacuous mind.

I have decided to make a guide for making gamertags, screennames, ect. to try and improve the quality of the future ones.

Rule 1: Make it pronounceable.
Don't make it JDFTWaQ45 or Frwuntiger, people won't be able to tell you to move or shoot and it just looks dumb.

A good rule. Speak English. Or at least speak your native language.

Rule 2: For the love of god, DON'T PUT X's!
It is so annoying having 3/4 of the team named xXUberNukeXx or XGayNinjaX. It does nothing to make you seem cool, all it does is show-off your susceptibility to conformity. Only put X's if they are actually how you spell it, like XrayMaX.

I think this started with Straight Edge, or "people who could really use a beer, a doob, and a blowjob". Of course, if you're Straight Edge, stop advertising it because it shows you as a preachy, intolerant asswipe who REALLY needs a drink or a joint to calm down.

Rule 3: Don't try and put curse words in it.
Seriously, come on. You won't get away with HugeA55 or Ilike2Fu(K or even $#!+Face, people WILL figure it out and you will be reported. Not to mention, you are broadcasting to the world "LOOK AT ME! I AM AN IMMATURE IDIOT!"

Amen. While you're at it, learn how to fucking curse properly in-game. Swear words are like spices. Without them, conversation is too fucking bland for its own good, too much and it's just unbearable.

Rule 4: Don't put the year you were born on the end.
If your GT is MegaAssassin98, people will figure out that you are young and will probably insult you for it. Also, you will probably not be taken seriously at all.

Unless you're older than 25. If I made my gamertag SimuLord77, it'd tell the world "not a 12-year-old".

Rule 5: Don't make a reference to a passing fad.
You will be stuck with your gamertag for awhile, so don't make it JonasBros4ever, only to find out that they are all babyeaters. Also, if you make your gamertag Naruto364927 or some other reference to a TV show, make sure that you won't grow sick of it anytime soon.

On any message board that's been around for long enough, there are plenty of SSGSquall and ZidaneX94s around. If you must do this, make it something enduring, like VoodooChildSRV or RHCPRocks.

Rule 6: Don't make references to controversial topics.
If you make your gamertag KKKLover3256, NaziFire89, or W33d4life420, you will be insulted and ridiculed, even if you aren't really like that at all.

Amen. Stupid for Stupid's sake is a bad idea.

Rule 7: Don't put excessive numbers in your gamertag.
Please, don't make your gamertag ubergamer46387, it is just annoying and shows your unoriginality. It also makes me wonder if there are 46386 other ubergamers.

It makes me wonder what was so fucked up about Formulas 1 through 408 that the chemists had to let everyone know it took 409 tries to invent something that worked.

Rule 8: Stop the assassin/shadow crap.
Stop making your gamertag _____assassin. This crap is every where. In about half the games I play, there will be someone with assassin or shadow in their name. It is just so unoriginal.

And even if you can walk the walk, you won't be taken seriously.

Rule 9: Capitalize it.
Although this isn't a significant problem, it's your name. It should be capitalized. It makes people take you more seriously. Who seems more mature? Slyman43 or slyman43?

And as a personal aside, stop calling me "Simulord". The L is capitalized. Note that this is a cautionary tale to anyone who would consider capitalizing a letter in the middle of their usernames.

Rule 10: Don't make it all caps.
When your gamertag is ALIENKILLER223, it gives people the impression that you are trying to be heard by yelling, which is a sign of immaturity. Thus, putting you GT in all caps makes you seem IMMATURE.

WHAT? I CAN'T HEAR YOU OVER ALL THIS SHOUTING! But seriously, another good idea.

Rule 11: Avoid using leetspeak.
If you call yourself 5up3rdud3hax0r, you come off looking like a pushover. If you must use it, be sure that it is placed appropriately, or BigDud3Hax0r ends up looking like BigDudHax

Nothing says "I'm 100 times better in my head than I am in real life" quite like leet and cellphone txt msg-style usernames/gamertags.

Rule 12: GOOD GOD, DON'T PUT MLG!
By calling yourself MLGKillamon, you have now successfully labeled yourself as a wannabe. Even if you really are MLG, you should be able to show it in the game, instead of having it stamped onto your gamertag.

Not that anyone gives a flying fuck about MLG anyway. If you're the sort of person who DOES give a fuck about "professional gamers", you're probably an insufferable twat monkey who's no fun to play with online.

Rule 13: If a name you wanted is taken, don't add a 1 to the end. Don't modify it barely so it's acceptable. If you meet the guy with the original name, it could be awkward. And you could be classed as a poser. -Nox13last

Unless the number has some significance---I'm MonsterDog on Slate, but that name was taken on Hotmail and on ESPN.com so I added a 5 to it. Five was my high-school baseball number and it's also my lucky number (once won $1,085 on a $1 bet at a roulette table when it came up back to back) so I think it's acceptable there.

Rule 14: Don't put your gamertag lIkE tHiS where it hurts my eyes to the point of blindness. -topsyturvy

I aGrEe CoMpLeTeLy. ThIs Is AnNoYiNg.

Rule 15: If it took you less time to think of your name than it does to type it, you lose. -Ultrajoe

Except Ultrajoe is cool, proving that simple is better and you should probably consider putting less rather than more thought into your gamertag. In the words of former 49ers coach Steve Mariucci, "You think, you stink."

All right that's it! If you have any additional rules to submit, please put them in the comments section and I might add them and credit you if they are good enough. I might be making other commandments for videogame design, FPS's, Horror games, ect. Please tell me if I should make more in the future. Thanks!

You're welcome, but who died and made you king?

I like it that I can tell from a Gamertag that some people are immature. Why teach them how to hide that?

For my GT I just combined my two favorite words at the time "Chump" and "Hole"

This method was suggested to me after I spent about an hour trying to decide on something effective, and I'd like to think getting mowed down by someone known as Chumphole would stick in the mind.
