You've convinced me to have my name as xXshadowassassinXx in every game I play in from now on.

When people are so uncreative that they just slam their head on the keyboard and go with whatever comes up.
But seriously, I hate it when I run into people with the name "askjdhkljasdhgal" (and yes, I do run into people with those kinds of names".
I also hate it when people have twice as many vowels than consenents in their name (aaawsoomeemaaaan, i have seen that before).
This implies to MMOs as well
I had a friend with 'ASDFGHJKL137' as their name o_O he is not the coolest around

Any of the following Non-Words: Crzy, Azn (Asian), Boi, and Grl/Grrl. Would it kill you to use some more vowels? Your name isn?t going to overload the servers!
Some of those words have specific subcultural meanings.

"Boi" implies a certain general kind of gendered behavior (kind of a softer masculinity) for people in various LGBT subcultures.

"Grrl" (from "riot grrl") can imply aggressive, punky feminism.

"Azn" says that the person using it isn't just Asian, but likely part of a particular American subculture of young people of Asian descent -- folks who have assimilated into the local culture but retain a certain kind of (often racialist) pride in their ethnic identity. "Azn" implies a certain specific range of tastes in fashion, music, &c. that "Asian" or "Asian-American" do not.

That's the thing that makes them useful for Internet-names and "gamertags" in the first place: communicating a bunch of shit about your identity in just a few characters of text. Labels like this can become rather watered-down over time, of course, and lose their utility -- especially as more people who don't get their context start using them for stuff.

-- Alex
Unfortunately, I've never seen those three words EVER used separate from each other. Back on some MMOs I would Meet dozens of CrzyAznBoi/Grls. It's the heavy lack of creativity I take the most offense with.

rule 15 made me lol!
i think it took nearly a month to think up the name that became my GT. originally i used to be Archaon666 for everything, then i had a stint on Runescape, where they wouldn't allow the 666, so it became 6044, which was my candidate number at GCSE level exams. it's just sort of stuck from there

If you're going to put your name in it, don't question how people know your name.

Example from experience:
Me: Hey, George, can you cover me?
xXKingGeorgeXx: How do you know my name?!

It just makes you look stupid.

Actually commenting on your guidelines:
They're all pretty good, though I would say that they are maybe directed at the wrong crowd here. I mean, most of the people here are mature enough to know these guidelines already.

Except for Max, but then again he goes out of his way to be the exception.

Using your real First and Last name; what is the point of even having a screenname / gamertag then?
Uhm because you sortof gotta have a name for your account? I use my first name and the initials of my last name, cause no matter what I come up with it seams like something fake anyways. And i can't just leave it blank can I? I'm not trying to create an alternate personality for when i'm online, same reason i use my own face as my avatar (though it's currently consealed by a paint-added ninja mask cause of genre wars)

To the OP.

Seeing that you slign arround the word immature as a reason not to use stuff in your gamertag several times i've gotta ask you this: You are aware that many gamers are NOT adults right?
I would rather play with a guy who has say 97 in his name and isn't ashamed of beeing 12 years old than i'd play with someone who goes over the top to hide his age, cause fake maturity is 100 times worse than immaturity.

I'd like to add one. Admittedly, I didn't scan all the posts for it, but since I didn't see it in the original post (which you're obviously updating), I'm going to assume noone's mentioned it so far.

Don't put special characters in your name if you don't actually mean the sound they symbolize. Don't call yourself "Hëllø" if you mean "Hello". Because chances are you'll run into someone who actually has those letters in his or her native language. And then you'll look stupid.

I was going to post somthing along the lines of "You can tell me how to choose my stupid screen name" but it transpired that my name obeys all of the OP's commandments.

Cheif, do you think you you can edit Rule #8 to include "sniper"? There are at least as many people named asfter sniping as there are assasin.

I use Xanadeas pretty much everywhere anymore. It's a completely original name and as far as I know no one else has it. I'm quite happy with it that way.

Why is X considered the coolest letter anyway?

It's got nothing on D.
Its a well known fact that B is the coolest letter given that the answer to the question is always B.

I used to make people who actually took tags seriously really annoyed with my old CS name. Being killed by xVaMpIrE.NiNjA.SaMuRaI.KiLlEr.UKx really got to some people!
Heh, did the same thing in TF2 and L4D I was xExtremeCobraSniperReaperKillerx. I prided myself in having the longest name in any match. It was really great when in the L4D loading screens when my name would cover all the other characters.

(Related to Rule 1): Make your name READABLE. This includes words in another language (like 蓬莱山 輝夜)

My friend was playing some COD4 recently and I saw someone with the name "Sk8terboy1221" and I just laughed.

Oh and,

Rule 12: GOOD GOD, DON'T PUT MLG!
By calling yourself MLGKillamon, you have now successfully labeled yourself as a wannabe. Even if you really are MLG, you should be able to show it in the game, instead of having it stamped onto your gamertag.
I hate idiots that do this, you never see people from real leagues like CPL or CEVO with those letters stamped on them.

I have decided to make a guide for making gamertags, screennames, ect. to try and improve the quality of the future ones.
Rule 8: Stop the assassin/shadow crap.
Stop making your gamertag _____assassin. This crap is every where. In about half the games I play, there will be someone with assassin or shadow in their name. It is just so unoriginal.
Could you possibly add killer or sniper to that. I don't know how many different combinations of shadowsniper65 or killerassassin72. It pisses me off when someone puts in l33tstalkersniper76 and they suck at sniping, or stalking or just playing the game for that matter.
