I'm calling a Warhammer 40,000 style RPG and I whole-heartedly approve.

Nah its not Fallout folks!

Imagine one set in like... the 19th Century, yeah, now that'd be brilliant, Muskets and Rifles, Rapiers and Scimitars too, and magic could be something that was forgotten, then rediscovered in the game, now that would be awesome.
so you mean... Fable 2?

OT: probably would. it might not feel like an 'Elder Scrolls' game but dammit i'd play it.

I was always curious : is it possible for high-tech to evolve in the world dripping with magic that much ?
Arcanum, the best example of "both worlds" is a little different - one "path" excludes other, and magic isn't really that potent. It can't cure plagues which leads to medicine. I believe that one of joinable companions said that clearly.

But Tamriel ?
Why invest into medicine since we have Restoration spells that can cure everything ?
What's the purpose of inventing transport since all we have to do is master teleport spells ?
Why invent gunpowder and guns if skilled mage has all the Hell's fires at his disposal ?

No need for steam power, electricity and stuff. No electronics, no quantum mechanics.
I don't think that this world would go further than simple mechanical devices.

...of course we have Dwemers or rather their inventions. What's interesting : there are no factories, no laboratories, no science scrolls or books. My personal opinion is : Dwemers are not part of Tamriel. They are aliens or descendants of earlier, more "technical" civilization.

...Just saying. :)

Astronomy in The Elder Scrolls works nothing like real life, so Bethesda would either have to retcon a lot of the lore or create a really weird method of space travel.

Actually there are skimitars in Skyrim already.
Just very hard to come by and completely useless as weapons thought (as if they ment to say 'lol western weapons are our specialty so nyaaah.)

Because the magic can't cure everything. If it could, you wouldn't see wounded or dying people in places around the world, and no-one would have invented a cure disease potion. That's essentually an early form of medical technology.

What's the purpose of inventing transport since all we have to do is master teleport spells ?
Because everyone seems to have forgotten how to cast those since Morrowind.
Even if they hadn't, not everyone can cast magic. There are carts in Skyrim to transport people and the slit striders in Morrowind.

Transport technology clearly has a place.

Why invent gunpowder and guns if skilled mage has all the Hell's fires at his disposal ?
Because, again, not everyone has access to magic.
And, with magic around, you wouldn't necessarily need gunpowder to make a gun. That very same mage could use soul gems to produce an explosion to propel bits of metal in a fashion anyone could use.

Ta da, a gun that uses magic to fire.

TES...
In Space...
Go speak to the Giants, they're experts on this stuff.

Honestly, the farthest into the future I would go is not at all, and instead explore the past a bit more in the next game. Have it take place a bit after Skyrim, but with heavy focus on the Dwemer ruins, and finally give at the very least some hints as to what happened to the Dwemer in it. It doesn't have to be entirely set in Dwemer ruins, that would get quite monotonous, but I would like the main story to send ou in to uncover some Dwemer mystery. In the process, you would quite obviously encounter a lot of Dwemer constructs, the Falmer would be around for the non-steampuck part of the Dwemer ruins, and there is plenty we don't know about the Dwemer, why not make an interesting story out of it.
At the moment, my best explanation for what happened to the Dwemer is that they found an Oblivion portal in each of their cities, or made one, and all decided to go in there for some reason and somehow close it behind them. Yeah... We need a better explanation.

Bethesda do fantasy and they do it well, and by fantasy I mean past ages with a twist. What they've produced so far is great and they do better each time (I mean I didn't like New Vegas as much as FO3, but that was due to the mechanics).

I'd really like to see them take on some earlier periods in history. Having said that, their games are so rich because of the back-stories and histories they've created in and between their games.

I'd like to remind you that i'm not talking about recreating our world in fantasy setting. It's not about fantasy meets the Flintsones where each and every thing must be recreated in magical fashion. I'm thinking about fantasy alternative to high-tech reality.

True, some things are hard or impossible to replace but do we really need them ? The Mankind is known from its ability to find a different way, to bypass hardships and go a little "citius, altius, fortius" each day.

True, not everyone is meant to be a spellcaster, but let me remind you that 20-30 years ago IT sector was not that different from pure wizardry. Nowadays most people are capable of working with computers, so why magic should be that different ?

Also : just like a science, magic evolve. Tamriel is still in its feudal phase. With all this commotion between Mankind and -Mer i guess it's a loooooooong way until their, magical equivalent of Einstein, Heisenberg and (we like it or not) Jobs'n'Gates.

I still think that's not unreasonable to think about advanced, yet void of modern technology world. :)

The only thing I would change would be the addition of guns. I find it slightly odd that the people of Tamriel have never thought to stuff a bomb down the closed end of a metal tube, stuff some rocks or similar in after the bomb, then set that bomb off while pointing the open end at someone they don't like.
umm....what?

So your saying that the people of Tamriel, should shove an object that they've never heard of, or even have the gunpowder to make, down a metal tube, which would then result in there hands blowing off.....
Somebody had to be th first one to suck a cows tit, yeah know?

No. The reason I, and probably a lot others, love the Elder Scrolls games is due to the setting.

I lol'd.

But seriously, that sounds like it would be terrible.

Elders Scrolls should NEVER take place in the future!
EVER!

I would like to see a Steampunk-like Elders Scrolls game. It would be interesting.
Morrowind was probably the most Steampunk-like game in the series so far.

Not too far in the future (unless it's like...Mass Effect...okay I'll admit I'd like a future Elder scrolls) Steampunk would just be awesome. Guns replacing Bows, Magic being relatively rare but still practiced, Large hostile...areas...with...I don't know but...I'd buy it.
You guys want TES to go back in time, not forward. (Hint: The Dwemer [http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Dwemer#Technology])
I don't believe that it was ever explained how the Dwemer disappeared. (I may be wrong though, so correct me if I'm wrong)

That being said, the Dwemer could reappear sometime in the future, but that would take away a lot of the mystery behind them.

ehh...from what I know of them they destroyed an already crippled race. An entire race (snow elves) used to be but not too interested in them now. I think they disappeared because they were experimenting with things that angered some god or a daedra prince. Perhaps the patron god of the Snow Elves?

Few people seriously ask the question 'why did the the Dwemer disappear.' Therefore no one really paid attention when the answer was found.

We know how they disappeared, if not exactly why.

The point was: All of their technology, society, infrastructure, etc was steampunk. So a game set in the past (before their fall) rather than the future would be a steampunk-like TES game.
True true true but I'd rather have an entire steampunk world then steampunk limited to Dwemer caves. That's a whole lot of un-steamy Skyrim left.

If Mass Effect and The Elder Scrolls had a baby, I would play it.
