I asked Carrie, and I think what you suggested would indeed count as copyright infringement.

"It is also worth noting that fan fiction and fan art can be a trademark violation as well, especially if it uses names and titles in a way that causes confusion as to whether they are official. Trademark disputes over fan creations are rare, but still possible."

This is probably a stupid question but I'm going to ask it anyway to save me making something and then have it voided.

With regards to the copyright stuff, are we cool with using Escapist branding, content logo/artwork etc? Seeing as it's for the Escapist and you own it and use it if we win I assume it would be ok.

It's not a stupid question, I had the same exact question before you showed up :)

I'm wondering the same because I don't know if MovieBob, Jim Sterling, Yahtzee, etc. own their own copyrights or if they all belong to the Escapist...

I also have a second question: Can they be animated (I didn't see that in the rules)? I'm hoping to create something that will blow "PUPPIES!" away...

Yeah you can use our art. Animation is fine, since we have some of those already I presume it's possible. Just don't make it derogatory.

Are photos allowed? As long as we've taken the photo ourselves?
I'm a bit of a keen photographer.
Sure, why not? It's your art in that case.

You know...I thought this would be much easier than it's turning out to be.

The ideas are there; how to execute said ideas so that it actually looks presentable on the other hand...

Maybe a little inspirational Easter Video Game session will clear up the mind

EDIT: Nope...didn't help. Holy Smokes my first attempt looks horrible. Maybe no one else will enter and the Escapist will be forced to use it. That's probably the only shot this first one has.

EDIT 2: GAH! I had two ideas but now I don't like them and now I can't think of anything else to do but I feel like I should do something especially with a run-on sentence like the one I am currently building but this is just so stressful and I just can't think of anything!!!!

Ugh...my ideas suck, I need a drink...

Lastly, here's some inspiration for those who say they don't want to because they don't think they can compete...

Damn, I was hoping that the Burt Reynolds background shown in the article would be a background.

Just watched Alien, Aliens and Alien 3 (partway through Alien Resurrection now)

Did you submit it through the contest system on the actual page? This is awesome.

Damn it! I was hoping that my shitty design would be the only one submitted, giving me the auto-win. Now I have to do some actual work to compete with this awesomeness!?! *Grumble grumble grumble...

EDIT: When I do make one that wouldn't make me shame my entire family for creating it, I will post it here. I'm kind of disappointed that yours is the only one here so far...it's tough to steal designs find inspiration and get excited when no one else posts pics!

I made two backgrounds to submit for this competition but after submitting the first one I get a thank you message instead of the box that allows me to upload.
I have tried refreshing the page but it still won't let me submit the second picture.

Does anyone know how to fix this?

Close your browser and re-open.

If that fails, clear your cache and try again.

If that fails, sign out of your user and sign back in.

If that fails...uh...you broke the internet.

EDIT: Wait a second...this isn't going to work in my plans to undermine my competition. Please send all new entries right to me, I'll be sure they get to the right place...Mu Ha HAAAAA!!!

I think I broke the internet - clearing the cache doesn't work, when I log in again I get the same message.
Thanks for the help anyway - at least I submitted the better one first.

It's a little funny as the thing I post the most with cannot see past the site borders for the background...

Still, I may throw my hat into the ring for the sake of fun!

OOOOOOOHH!

I've got an idea! A background with username signatures! It may be a little unoriginal but ten years from now it'll show who was here. An Escapist time capsule if you will. I don't know how the logistics of it will work though...

That idea sounds awesome actually :}. Each Escapist Member can write their signature thus send you an image of the signature by PM so that way you can paste where you want the signatures to go and the background doesn't get all sloppy (because who knows, a user can write much bigger then say the majority of people).

Up to Nasrin if she approves though. After all, this is a tribute to The Escapist for years to come!
I actually thought about it and perhaps text/font signatures of usernames would be better. Less illegible signatures and set sizes (I'm thinking that the font size 20 will fill the page very nicely) will make it easier to manage. It does mean slightly less personalization of the signatures but we can have people pick a wide variety of fonts that fit them well. We won't have any Wingdings or anything.

Anyway, I'll wait until Nasrin pops on before I get moving further on it.

How did I miss this contest, I need to check the front page more often and not skim over things like this.

I shall try to think something up and enter it post haste.
