The final boss is never the hardest boss, is it?

I actually have a list of games that I never beat because the final boss was so hard. Among them are The Force Unleashed, Rayman 3, and Kingdom Hearts 2. I also never beat Jak 2, but that's just because I'm not good at whack-a-mole.
However, in games like Halo and Gears of War, the final bosses seem to be getting easier every time. I can only assume that such a trend is happening in other games as well.

Well, Paper Mario and its sequel disagree. The final Bowser and the Shadow Queen were quite difficult.
Oh, geez, I forgot the Shadow Queen. That boss was just... Ugh.

Apart from the optional bosses Final Fantasy Games final bosses are very hard, except the one in FF8 i smoked her ass, although i was lv 60 and my attack was 300 so each hit was 9999.
I heard in FF7 all you do at Bishieroth's final form is just push the circle button.
And in my opinion, FF2 didn't have too bad a final boss... but getting to him was a *****.

True. You are granted Cloud's final Limit Break, and he start's the battle at full Limit meter. You're practically forced to use the limit break, which if memory serves, begins the final cutscene.

Tabuu was a pest in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Easily more trouble than the rest of 'em.

Does Crawmerax from Borderlands count as a final boss? The game refers to him as the "secret final boss" so... yeah... He deserves a mention for being so fother mucking hard anyway.

I don't consider that part the final boss, the bit before is very hard even with high level ppl. But yes the final final boss you just perform a limit break (Omnislash) and it's done but that's like 20 hits all 9999, so the boss must have 199980 HP.

The final boss from Prototype was definitely the fucking hardest! It's the one that made me break the RB on my 360 controller!

So, Escapists, can you think of any games where the final boss was the most difficult thing in the game?
The hidden boss in the monster arena in FFX. dont remember the name but i remember that it was exclusive to the PAL regions. You needed to catch the maximum amount of every monster in the game, than beat all the other special arena monsters (which are all worse than the final boss of the game).
and i think you also have to beat all the dark aeons to, which also are more powerfull than the last boss.

Be ready to die... a LOT! you need to have maxed out your stats beyond the line of duty and created/found the best weapons/accessories in the game to have a shot. and then you need some serious strategic skills.

be ready to spend 200++ hours on the game to beat this bastard.

EDIT: yeah i fucked up, i thought you said Wasn't, not was, my bad!

First of all, I'd like to point out that all of the games you mentioned are JRPG's, and JRPG's have a habit of having loads of beefed-up extra bosses just for the challenge. Second, they ARE that difficult BECAUSE they're not mandatory bosses (I mean, how many people would ever beat Kingdom Hearts if you were FORCED to kill that Nazgûl-thing at the clocktower?).

Anyway, in Cave Story the final boss (that is, the REAL final boss, Ballos) is waaaay harder than the Doctor and Undead Core.

I have a tendency to make the final boss stupidly easy due to ammo/gear hording. See the Zero Punctuation review of Fable to see what I mean.

The absolute easiest (ignoring things like The Saboteur or Fable 2) had to be Quake 2. I'd saved up two Quads and full BFG ammo. It must have lasted about 10 seconds.

Ace combat Zero the last boss was proably the hardest, Shadow of rome the last boss was also probly the hardest and DOW2 chaos expansion the last one was pretty hard even with deamonic powers

I can think of a few game genres where the final boss is typically the hardest.
Most platformers and fps games have a final boss that is harder than any other in the game.

Anything that is an adventure game tends to have 'secret'/'hidden' bosses that are harder than the final boss - the only examples I can think of where this isn't the case is with Metroid (I've only played the Prime series so far) and Zelda. Having said that, bosses in either series tend to have a particular knack to them, and tend to vary difficulty depending on your skill/preparedness to exploit this knack.

"Voodoo vince" the final boss is massive (it's a giant mech made out of theme park rides and bits of an old top hat tent... and a mine cart) if you die fighting him, which you will, you have to begin the whole encounter again.

General Tor of Iji was pretty hard, especially if you fight him in Maximum Charge (second playthrough only). Was Asha harder? Well, the first fight can be won with a single shot from the Nuke, and the second is optional (if you're awesome)...so, yeah, the final boss of Iji is the hardest.
Ultimortal difficulty on the other had, is a bit of a toss up. You are required to fight Asha 2 with a timer and no health pickups. While the same can be argued for Tor, I believe your timer is reset for boss battles and I think health is also restored. So for Asha you have to compensate for reduced health and conserving time to finish the sector. Not to mention he is extremely fast on this difficulty.

For Tor, specifically Maximum Charge, yeah I agree it's tough, but a lot of it is memorization and good judgement, especially where the Skysmashers (that nobody likes) are involved.

Aye, like number2301, I think the final boss appears easier because at the end of the game you're usually stacked to the brim with ammo, health kits and so forth. I remember in God of War 1 that Ares was by far the toughest boss and he was the last boss. In saying that though, he's the only one I can think of at the moment. In most other cases the last boss was tough but not the hardest.

Seems I've been beaten to saying Iji by some other fans. Donkey Kong Country 2 has a final boss that is bewilderingly long and horrible, and much harder than all of the other bosses.

The 16th colossus in Shadow of the Colossus was absolutely not the most difficult one. It was one of the most timeconsuming, sure, but you knew exactly what to do, and doing so was not particularily hard. It was way too easy and way to long to be a suitable final boss, so to speak. It was, however, very climactic.

Dont get me wrong, even the most unimaginative and boring colossi were awesome and tons of fun to fight. Wonderful game.

In Portal, the final boss is the hardest!
Likewise in a little flash game called 'You have to burn the rope'. But that game will destroy you, and dance on your dismembered corpse afterwards.
