According to the president of Square Final Fantasy 13 may be the last Final Fantasy game and they are going to go and pursue other projects. This shocked everyone who ever cracked the joke "Final Fantasy isn't final, it just keeps going."

Well, I assume they'll still finish FF XIV considering they already announced it anyway. If this is really going to be the end though, all I can say is thank god. 13 is enough people!

13's a good number to stop at. At least for the single-player games and such.

Including all the spinoffs, sequels, prequels, ports, remakes, ect...there are around 50+ games that bear the Final Fantasy name.

It's more then 13. Including sequels and prequels, it's more like 15 or 16, I think.
EDIT: OK, I forgot about the games on PSP, spin offs and most stuff with FF on it.

OT: As a FF fan, I won't mind them ending the series after XIII or continuing it either. But if they do end it after XIII, they've had a good run considering how long they've been making them for so I wouldn't mind as much.

They mentioned this a few years ago too. I love the series, but I'd be okay with this. I'd be even MORE okay with it if they put all that energy into a new Chrono Trigger.

There'll be more.

There's always more.

But still, there's so many Final Fantasy games out there; any junkies who miss their fix can just go back and replay the many prequels and spin-offs.

I don't get why people are making a bit deal of this it will not be the last Final Fantasy that is like saying it will be the last Mario game even Street Fighter made a come back for the numbered series so this will not be the last.

I think that what he means is they won't be making conventional Final Fantasy games like the ones we know now maybe they will add completely different mechanics like Kingdom Hearts or make them more WRPG like.

Anyway, to be perfectly accurate, it reads "True" final fantasy on your link - which, given the fact that the series generally has a new system in place from game to game, isn't really that well-defined a statement. :p

At the end of the day, it kind of sucks, but at the same time it gives Squeenix the chance to maybe put some more effort into games that people aren't going to just pass on without a second glance because of the title or the high number at the end.

I'm fine with it either way, since the first game in the series I played was VII, at the tail end of the ps1's lifespan, then X, then XII, so I've got plenty of time to look back at the ones I never got the chance to play if they decide to stop at XIII or XIV.

I'm pretty sure they'll change the FF as we know it into something else instead. Or maybe, just maybe, they'll go out with a bang and take a huge long break from the franchise.

He said that XIII would probably be the last Final Fantasy game of its kind. There'll definitely be more Final Fantasy games in the future. They're just going to be stepping away from the traditional JRPG format into some more experimental ground.

At least, that's what this statement leads us to believe. No worries, Final Fantasy isn't going anywhere.

Here's the thing, pretty much every SquEnix RPG follows the same formula, and if they tacked on the Final Fantasy name to every game, the average fan would be unable to tell the difference. Especially considering there are very few true sequels in the Final Fantasy franchise.

If you want a Final Fantasy XIV, play one of their other RPGs and pretend you are playing FF XIV. There never was a reason for the Final Fantasy "sequels" to be called Final Fantasy anyways...except for marketing reasons. Blatant name dropping.

It makes sense they are doing this, but it doesn't make sense they didn't do this sooner. They should have been able to drop the Final Fantasy name years ago and begin to rely on the SquEnix name instead.

Well then why call it Final Fantasy?

What he probably meant is that they are going to stop making FFXIII games. There are already three of them, after all :)

But seriously, it would be the end of Square Enix. Their recent new IPs (Blue Dragon, Last Remenant, Dissidia) haven't sold very well at all and were pretty mediocre. Not to mention that they are running out of titles of yesteryear to rerelease on the PSP and DS.

I may be a Square Soft fanboy, but they have been making terrible decisions since the merger.
