Well then why call it Final Fantasy?
Because back then, Square Soft was a failing company about to go bankrupt and announced that this time would be their "final fantasy".

Good.

I'm tired of hearing about the next Final Fantasy every goddamn year.

I hope they ditch the turn based thing for a bit and do things more like Versus, Kingdom Hearts and White Knight Chronicles.

I doubt it. No company worth their salt throws a multi-million dollar franchise away unless it's starting to rot.

But since FF is just a series of set pieces on which mostly different games are built, if this turns out to be true I won't be upset. I don't even have time for 40-hour epics any more anyway.

They say it will be the last... but that is probably a lie. Remember, the FF licence is pretty much just a loose jumble of classes, races, and technology that can be applied to nearly any JRPG storyline, enabling the creators of the story to have to worry less about actually writing some of the nitty-gritty details and more about the world and its story in whole. It would also give the game an instant boost in sales simply by using the FF name (especially if it is a numbered title)

While Square Enix can try to put the FF licence to bed, they'll probably resusitate it later for a major project. The main issue is polish. FF games essentially must be heavily polished, which, given the immense size that some of those games are, takes a long time.

Maybe its better to stop. Imagine if in 20 years we had Final Fantasy XXX. That might be a better number to stop at. Or maybe not after all...

Okay, who forgot to barricade the gates? The trolls are pouring in now!

But I digress...

Yes, and Kojima stops making MGS after MGS2 MGS3 MGS4 MGS:pW.

Seriously though, not any time soon. And as said, "last it's kind" not "the last". It would not make one bit sense to quit yet the series still selling like bread and thanks to the "spiritual successor" formula rather than making direct sequels, it's gonna last a long time.

Besides, the last FF will obviously be named The Final Fantasy... Though in all fairness it apparently is "final" as in "ultimate".

They mentioned this a few years ago too. I love the series, but I'd be okay with this. I'd be even MORE okay with it if they put all that energy into a new Chrono Trigger.

Chrono Trigger is basically an unnumbered final fantasy.

Thirteen is a good number to stop at.

There is a point when a game series has run its course, and in my opinion, Final Fantasy has.

That'd probably, uh, time to change the naming scheme at least. But 20 years is way too optimistic prediction of the release schedule. Over 15 new FFs will take at least 30 years, but it could be easily 45 or more.

Think about it though, it'll take probably 150-300 years to hit Final Fantasy C. It'd be pretty funny if it went on for that long.

Well they still have versus XIII, agiato and that MMO in development frankly were I square I would finish once and for all release whatever they have had in development once its done, focus on versus XIII and make it I dunno good (they already stated it would be traditional) as an apology for 5 years of shit (X, X-2, XI, XII, XIII yes its going to be just as bad)

Seriously quit while your ahead Square games like Chrono Cross, FFVII, FFIX were great throught my childhood then we delved into these terrible anime appeal characters (yes the art style has always been anime-esque but the plots were never this soap operah, beleive it! bullshit, nor where the characters all transgendered Barret, Cid, hell even squall or cloud are all clearly men)

F9^%ing Finally!

It's not that I believe the FF series is cliche since they've brought on so much in the RPG genre, but I believe they should have developed the Vagrant Story series as well as the Parasite Eve series just to name a few of their successes.

And for God's sake, is it so hard to get a decent Chrono Trigger sequel that DOESN'T end with a convoluted plot?

End with it? The story in CC made no sense from the begnning. And this is coming from someone who didn't find Xenogears too convoluted (I was trained by NGE). Well, to be fair I did play Xenogears a much later, but a convoluted plot was hardly CC's only fatal flaw.

Too bad team Chrono has left the building.

Oh what a horrible thought. Too bad this thread has been totally debunked due to the planned release of Final Fantasy XIV sometime this year. [http://www.finalfantasyxiv.com/]

I think it is very funny, though. Both Final Fantasy 11 and 14 seem to be suffering the same problem of not ever really existing in the minds of the Final Fantasy Fanbase. It's funny to read threads where people list the Final Fantasies they've played, and then you get that turd who claims they've "played them all," and then they go and list every Final Fantasy except 11. Probably has something to do with its being online, same thing with 14 as well.

LOL, good point, but I really don't know how futuristic X really was. Technology was outlawed. Not to mention that VI, the last SNES one, was the one that started the more technological worlds.

XIV was already announced, but its just another MMO. I will probably be more than a year out though. And with the recent time lag between them, a potential XV would be at least 3 or 4 years out.
