I have to go with a combination of starcraft/warcraft 3. Two excellent games, benchmarks of the series. Not only was the vanilla great, but I could never get enough UMS/custom games. Bring on the Crash RPG or Dota!

It's threads like these that make me feel like the oldest goddamn person on the site. Qbert and Frogger on the Atari 2600 introduced me to gaming and Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past sold me on it for life.
heh i know how you feel m8.
I got into gaming around the NES era, a friend of mine had the console and i was over there pretty much non stop playing super mario 3. It wasn't until the SNES came out that I managed to convince my parent to get my a console, Megaman X was one of my first games on that, it was probably that game more than anything that hooked me for life.
Man if LttP had left any doubt, X erased it.

Well, there was the Christmas I got the Playstation, that came with the Crash Bandicoot 2, that made get pick up the Crash Bandicoot 3 cover story in PSM, that made me subscribe to PSM, that made me see previews of Soul Reaver, that made me buy Soul Reaver...

And it cycles from there. I had a Genesis and all the Sonic games, but I'd say Crash Bandicoot 2 was what made me into a "gamer."

I was a gamer the moment I got my nintendo 64.
It was a gift from my uncle, and it came with 6 games: Goldeneye, Star Fox 64, Blast Corps, Cruisin USA, Mortal Kombat, and a crappy racing game called Automobile Lamborghini. Despite the 2nd crappy racing game (though I loved Cruisin USA) these 5 drove me into gaming. A year later, I got Zelda Ocarina of Time, Banjo Kazooie, Pokemon Blue and Pokemon Stadium, and all of a sudden I was into gaming.

GoldenEye 007 and LoZ: Ocarina of Time, both those games got me addicted to videogames.

It kinda slightly saddens me that I am to be the first to say this, but it was most certainly Mechwarrior 2. The explosions and robots drew me in, but what really captured me was that strange feeling of solitude you got running through a mission alone, destroying your enemies with brutal efficiency as you did your duty as warrior of the clan. It's a feel that no other game, not even the expansions, were really able to capture.

After that, Runescape, Age of Empires II, Pokemon, and finally Mechwarrior 4 all had a huge influence on my lifestyle, nay, my identity as a gamer throughout my childhood.

Any other 'mech fans around here?

I honestly can't remember the very first game I played since I started so young.

My gaming habit was (as far as I can tell) picked up in much the same way that babies pick up on their parents indigenous dialect. My father had played his favorite games with me even when I was still too young to walk, leading to some rather hilarious home videos. In fact, my desire to game with him led to my burning passion for reading, since he wouldn't read the game aloud and I despised missing out on the increasing number of plots as the console generations grew. As far-fetched as it seems, gaming is as much a part of my growing up as 'Sesame Street' and Kindergarten. It really is quite extraordinary when I think about it.

To answer the topic though, the games that I remember furthest back were...

Resident Evil 2
Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time (And Links Awakening Simultaneously)
Super Mario 64
Panzer Dragoon (Sega Saturn)
...
Wow, there really are too many.

Super Mario world!

My grand-parents bought a SNES for my brother. I ended up playing it more than him. After that, my dad sealed the deal when he bought Super Mario All-star.

Final Fantasy 7.
It was the first game I was able to keep a save file for.
EDIT: Well hold on. From NES to Genesis, my whole family were gamers. We all played the video games like addicts.

Abe's Odyssey. I wish I had that game right now, I could complete it and not just get stuck, nor terrified.

I remember playing Duke Nukem 3 (i think it was that one) from DOS back when I was like 8. Then I was introduced to Twisted Metal 2. My cousin and I played that every time I was at his house and then my family finally got me a PS with Twisted Metal 3. That and Age of Empires 2 were some of the first games that I sat and played for over 4 hours at a time (Which was a big deal for me back then) and didn't think anything of it. I still think that AoE 2 is one of the best RTS games out there.

EDIT: I read someone else's post and I almost forgot about Goldeneye. That game got me into FPS, hands down. TL;DR version: AoE 2, Twisted Metal 2, Goldeneye were HUGE in getting me into gaming.
