Does Black Sabbath count? Weren't most of the band members American?

Man, I'm really surprised the amount of people that don't know what they're talking about.

For me, it's Metallica, and The Doors.

I think it would have to be an artist, rather than a band.

Crosby, Presley, Cash, Jackson.

Dial it down a bit kid, I'm having a hard time reading your post through all that tween angst and persecution complex. It's not that i view you opinion as having less value its just that i don't see how anyone could argue out of all the thousands of American bands that have been formed over the last 80 odd years, Avenge sevenfold, a band that have been around for maybe 8 years, and as far as i know have not won any awards or had much mainstream success, are the best.

Sales wise? The Eagles.

Raw talent, consistency, etc; maybe Tom Petty and the heart breakers? CCR? Grand funk railroad? This is actually rather difficult haha.

Oh and i will laugh at the first person that says AC/DC or avenge seven fold again...oh you kids.

Hardly anyone is keeping to the topic, the amount of British/Australian bands mentioned is prrof ot this. I'm still happy no one has mentioned the unmentionable above mentioned band :D

Well, let's just make a list of potential candidates:

Lynyrd Skynyrd
The Eagles
Jimi Hendrix (my vote, btw)
Metallica
Aerosmith
Poison
Guns N Roses
Boston
Pearl Jam
Nirvana
Van Halen
ELVIS PRESLEY (seriously, can't get much greater than that)

There is, of course, a lot more. This was just from a cursory scroll through my iTunes library.

...does Rush count? They're Canadian, which you could say is 'american'.

What were you saying about no serious contender to Lynyrd Skynyrd?

EDIT: right, the post above me reminded me of some more: Bob Dylan, The Beach Boys, Tom Petty.

To stray away from the rock stuff, though: Michael Jackson, The Temptations, Robert Johnson, Son House, The Supremes, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and much much more.
Quite frankly, you just earned a /Thread.

Johnny Cash and the Tennessee Two(later Three).
or
Creedence Clearwater Revival have always been so very quintessentially American.

Any picking a band that's been around less than 30 years is totally not getting the point here.

I will happily accept that America do music better than any other part of the world - even England are second to them. Pro-American sentiments from the English! Peace and love for all.

Not gonna name a greatest band, simply because I like so many, and I don't give music rank because styles can vary massively.
No, Britain has had some of the best bands ever. Yes rock started in the USA but when the Brits listend to early rock(then called R&B) they improved it beyond belief. Hell if it wasnt for bands like The Beatles then rock n roll would not have been has popular as it is today. If it wasnt for bands like Led Zepplin then hard rock which eventually evolved into heavy metal would not be around. So i suppose im saying, Americans started rock, but the British improved it exponentially.

If they whole thing about America doing music better than the rest of the world was sarcasm, disregard the paragraph above.
