FullMetal. (The original, not the crappy remake.)
DeathNote.
Digimon. (Series 1, and 3. We pretend 2 didn't happen.)

Similarly, you'll get a thousand responses to this saying 'DURRHURR BLEACH IS BEST ANIME EVAR!' Encompassed in this question are all the associated problems too. Anime is far too varied and diverse for there to be one answer.

And, while these people are perfectly entitled to their opinions, they are also wrong. Everyone knows (even if they don't realise it) that Darker Than Black is the best Anime ever.

But seriously everyone, stop just reeling off your stock answer and start actually considering your opinion properly. Death Note, as far as I could tell, was about an emo actually crossing the line between sanity and insanity, and wasn't very interesting. Ghost In The Shell lacked direction and didn't really have a story. Bleach is 70% filler and don't get me started on Naruto.

My list of top anime by genre is as follows:
Action: Black Lagoon
Science-fiction: Darker Than Black
Horror: Helsing OVA
Romance/drama: Clannad
AWWW DUDE, NO-ONE DISSES BLEACH. but on a serious note I still watch /read it and I enjoy it but there is too much FILLER. If I remember correctly they had over 36 weeks of filler on end =_=. I think you can tell from my avatar that it's one of my favourites but I haven't seen that many.(don't have the time(although i have skimmed through dragonball Z and loved it))

On a side note can anyone suggest a good anime to watch or manga to read?

Niagro beat me to it but I second Claymore (for the same reasons). Hell, I even talked my folks into watching it and they enjoyed it.

/this week's Claymore plug by Karth

EDIT: corrected the spelling of Niagro's name. Sorry 'bout that.

I recently watched Gurren Lagann, and that was pretty amazing. Though Cowboy Bebop was just excellent, so there is that to consider. I haven't exactly seen all of Ghost in the Shell, but from what I've seen its pretty good, and I feel the same with Samurai Champloo.

Then you have other amazing stuff like Slayers, Wolf's Rain, Deathnote, Code Geass, FMA, Higurashi When They Cry, One Piece, Bleach and Naruto to some extent, and Gundam Wing. All really great shows.

Though I guess it has to be Cowboy Bebop, with Gurren Lagann in second place I suppose. Maybe Wolf's Rain in third, but wolves are my favorite animal so I maybe a bit biased.

Hokuto no ken. Manliest thing ever.

You know how most action tropes are overplayed nowadays in anime? They weren't when Hokuto no Ken aired because Hokuto no Ken invented those tropes for all anime to follow afterwords, and it did them better than most.

Also, it has actual plot, villains that have reasons for being villains, and the best Martial Arts usage in anime ever.

Dragonball Z. Only other ones I watched all the way through were Gundam Wing and Soul Eater, but those 2 can't match DBZ.

No problem.
Im not sure if part one and two have been translated and published outside of Japan yet, but Part three, Stardust Crusaders, has recently been published in the US.
So hopefully the first parts and the new parts will be released overseas soon.

i'm seconding spineyguy's nomination of Darker than Black, season 1 to be specific. The characters were well rounded and believable, the plot was excellent, and there was exceptional attention to details.

Fullmetal Alchemist is a close second for similar reasons though i gravitate to sci-fi.

Toradora deserves mention as well for the romance category.
