Netflix's Devil May Cry

While I enjoyed the performances, some of the decisions with the writing left a lot to be desired (and a few went in some troubling directions). Not the DMC series I would have made but there are some things to like.

5/10.
I watched the trailer, the fact that they made a papa roach song somehow worse kinda told me all they needed to about the series.

Devil May Cry Season 1 Netflix - I just got finished with watching this show.........Holy Shit, I love it!

Positives:

  • They get the source material right.
  • I love the expanded backstory of Lady and the White Rabbit. Making their stories connected works here.
  • The action is on point, exciting, and much more engaging than the 2007 anime.
  • All the voice actors did a wonderful job.
  • This show does fan service right. There are neat little references here and there, but you are not required to know them. Though if you're a long time DMC or even Capcom fan, there's plenty to find without being distracting nor completely in your face.
  • Arius going to be in the next season! I did not see that coming!
  • I love the animation in the origin/flashback episode.
  • There are some legit horror moments in this show. DMC Netflix remembers that og first game was supposed to be a Resident Evil game.
Negatives:
  • Some dodgy CGI animation. It's not the worst, but Netflix really needs to give these shows some extra budget so we can get more 2D with our demons here.
  • I didn't exactly agree with Lady capturing Dante in the end. For her character arc, I get she's a somewhat different version of the character, but the original Lady would tell her counterpart that the Vice President doesn't give a shit about her. Mary herself saw it first hand.
  • I am glad they included some songs from the games, even if they're different renditions, but they still should have included their original versions and put them in more action tense moments. The placement of "Devil Trigger" is well spot on though.

I've been seeing the heated discussions online, and I do have to say the decisions they made sound hilariously bad.

As someone who has never engaged with DMC I'm a little more curious now.

I talked about it in a different thread, and yeah, I really don't like the show. I think it's kind of awful, in similar ways to how the Yasuke netflix animated show was awful.

The new Gundam TV anime GQuuuuuuX started airing today on Amazon Prime and your favorite pirate site

It's an AU like most Gundam shows, but specifically splits off from the original show by having Char steal the prototype Gundam instead of Amuro jumping into it. 4 years later it turns out that Char is missing, the Zeon fought the Federation to a standstill and nominally won their independence (lmao, if you know what Zeon leadership is like)

Amate Yuzuriha, aka Machu, is having an existential crisis relating to growing up on a colony when she gets literally run in to by the enigmatic Nyaan, on the run from the cops for being a refugee (and also smuggling contraband). Shenanigans ensue. Meanwhile, returning 0079 character Challia Bull is searching for the mysterious Red Gundam, aided by test pilot Xavier Olivette, the experimental Omega Psycommu, and the prototype GXuuuuuuX mobile suit.

It's a good time. Gonna be relatively show for a TV anime, but fortunately had a much longer production time than G Witch so there shouldn't be a scheduling issue. The character design by Pokémon mainstay Take looks fantastic, the music is great, and the revamped designs are pure studio Khara

If you've seen the movie, it encapsulates the first three episodes, but their jumbling the order to introduce the new kids first

Ya know, until I saw the title on the embeds, I thought you were making some kind of joke about the name of the show that was going over my head.

I've been watching Megalobox 2: Nomad. I am digging the old-school vibe like the first season, but they get even further. I do love the Latino/Afro-Latino heavy influences in the show. The soundtrack is wonderful. I love the use Spanish guitars. I am not finished yet, but those first 4 episodes hit deep. I also did not expect Bishop Maxwell's voice actor to be playing Chief Jean. He did wonderful job.

Finished watching Planetes. Yeah, its pretty good, overall story is interesting, characters calm down with being annoying mostly. It is dated, they are in space but still have land lines and there isn't some assholes car floating around to be trashed.

@Dirty Hipsters

I like the first season of Megalobox, but I love the second season of Megalobox: Nomad. Season 1 is a 7/10, while Season 2 is peak fucking anime cinema! A perfect 10! I didn't mind the villain much either. Though I do love the internal conflict of the characters or story important boxers. They got so much done right for 13 episodes. The action scenes are on point too and even better than the first seasons. This is an excellent anime and I have nothing left to say.

Rewatching Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. I feel I can best sum up my feelings thusly:

Enjoyed the first season a lot as a cop show in a future that is not quite dystopian, not quite utopian but good and bad in mostly the same way the real world is, just with more advanced technology.

The second season I felt kinda disappeared up its own ass, politically.

Well season was more episodic, so if you weren't too much into one of the story, another would come around and could work for you, S2 is much more focus on one story.

They just announced a new adaptation, seemingly more in line with the original manga.

SAC I found boring. I couldn't even bother to finish the second season.

Okay so I just finished the second season. It does get a bit more mired in the politics than season one does, but I don't mind it because that kind of skull-duggery is absolutely my jam even if I don't fully grasp the full weight of some of the more philosophical digressions that are presented.

What I don't buy entirely entirely is this sudden, mystical connection between the Major and Kuze. I understand the idea of bonding over shared trauma - especially something as horrendous as what happened to them both - but I feel it would have made more sense if the connection was one-sided Kuze's way because it feels like the impression Motoko left on him would be stronger than the other way around.

I do adore however that the big moments of self-sacrifice and human decency that save the day are both done by the Tachikomas. A rare instance of the AI becoming sapient and making conscious decisions to do something noble to save people. And outside of the Major and the team at Section 9, those people will never know. "No greater love hath a man, than he lay down his life for his brother. Not for millions, not for glory, not for fame, but for one person, in the dark, where no one will ever know or see." And the tachikomas do both.
