I've said it before and I'll say it again: The current MK franchise sucks. A fresh reimagining of things might be just what it needs. That's no guarantee of course that the new version won't suck as well, but at least it looks better than the super-cheesy, overwrought, completely directionless 'official' storyline.

One thing though:
And what about putting Scorpion front and center? "Listen, Scorpion is the bad guy and will stay a bad guy. His motives are personal," he continued. "If Jax and Sonya can coattail off that revenge, awesome. But Scorpion does not care."
Casting Scorpion as the good guy wouldn't even be such a departure from the games as this implies, considering he's been a bit of a (reluctant) anti-hero occasionally in the games as well. What with being the champion of the gods and all.

Best comeback from a Gold I have seen in a while :)

Also, I kind of enjoyed the nitty-gritty feel the trailer had. But before I would say a more magical MK movie would suck, I would like to see a trailer for it.

Considering he got two big names in on this for a song, one has to think this guy has some serious cajones and charisma going for him. How a studio could ignore him I could not imagine.
I want to see this happen.

I agree. Besides, who says we have to like the protagonist? Respect goes a long way to holding my interest.

There is nothing wrong with your television set. Do not attempt to adjust the picture. We are controlling transmission. If we wish to make it louder, we will bring up the volume. If we wish to make it softer, we will tune it to a whisper. We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical. We can roll the image, make it flutter. We can change the focus to a soft blur or sharpen it to crystal clarity. For the next hour, sit quietly and we will control all that you see and hear. We repeat: there is nothing wrong with your television set. You are about to participate in a great adventure. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to... The Outer Limits.

That fan film was great... I would love to see an alternative reality take of the comics and videogames that we have grown up with. Sort of like that new videogame with spiderman in it.
$7500 was used to create that? it looks like a tv show pilot episode. ...

Regardless of whether this movie goes through or not, you can be assured that Warner Brothers has certainly taken note of this video's existence.

IF he can stretch the awesomeness that was that 8 minute movie over an hour and half then let him do it man!!!

Its a good idea for a fan to be behind it.

If this guy was actually allowed to make this, we would have the first good video game movie ever.

It even makes me want to go play Mortal Kombat, and I've never been into Fighting games all that much.

I really did not like the trailer, too much fbiness that killed the surreal characters of MK, so i will boycott the movie by not going to the cinema or by watching another movie...

I demand to know why he killed Johnny Cage.
That part made me happy, I always thought Cage was a bit of a jerk. Not that the others are much better (except maybe Jax/Sonja/Raiden), but he just seemed like a smarmy bastard.
Johnny's been killed off and restored several times in the series canon. Tancharoen did say they he would include the spiritualism and the supernatural in the full movie if here were to make it, so you cannot rule out Cage being revived by Raiden.

He did it in two days..... IN A CAVE.... WITH A BOX OF SCRAPS!!!.

Well yeah I'm pretty happy with this... I'm happy that he's going to use the mystical elements, though I was excited in seeing how he was going to pull of the special moves in a more plausible manner.

While I would like to see the full product of what he's done with this mini film... change the characters names and such so he had full control over it (well I say full, I guess it depends on the studio), I think we need to give him a chance with this. I mean like he said... he had a low budget so he couldn't do much with it... maybe a lot will change when (and if) he gets the budget. Either way I'm excited, though I think if he did take your suggested route he'd probably get the whole "MK rip off" thrown on his movie. Maybe if he changed the motives and the appearance of the characters but kept the look and feel of the movie he'd set up, he could get away with it... just maybe.

Though to be honest I think the trailer does keep within the original concept of Mortal Kombat series. I'd love to sit here and write my reasons... however I wrote my full reasons down in another post a while back so I think I'll just take a snippet out of that to save me on finger cramp.

As a fan of the original games I enjoyed the first Mortal Kombat movie... it was good, needed a higher rating than PG-13 so we could see more fatalities but other wise it was good. I also enjoyed the cheese story behind Mortal Kombat and I've enjoyed it all the way up to MK vs DC... however... I just can't see where else they can go with this. I think they've pretty much wrapped everything up, left a few plots open here and there but none are really all that interesting. I think the game it self needs a re-boot along with the movies. I'm going to keep my eye on this.

Also it's worth noting that the direction they are using here is relevant to the 2000's genre. Were every thing is dark and gritty, just like the original Mortal Kombat was relevant to the 80's/90's genre where everything was ultra cheesy. While as this (hopeful) movie seems to be taking the underground fight club and saw film style with the Dark Night/ Batman Begins dark grittiness, the original game took influence from enter the dragon, bloodsport and big trouble in little china. So this new look seems pretty faithful to the concept of the original games but changing with the time to reflect the current trend.

That's not to cash in on the success on the other movies around it but it seems (just like the original games) more like a clever parody of them. The trailer had it's fair amount of cheese (which I loved it for) and even though they were all straight faced... they probably knew what they where parodying.

More on to the movie... I hope if they do take this on, if they decide to change actors... leave Michael Jai White as Jaxx... I think he would be awesome for that role.

That's how I see it anyway... I don't know about you.

When has the Escapist ever offered promises of unbiased journalism? They produce opinion pieces.

Anyone else think that this is how ALL (if not, most) films should be pitched to major studios?

Director makes a low budget short, puts it on youtube, people like it and studio says "lets make it a movie!"

Now if all directors did this, maybe we could avoid some of those films we all wish we could un-watch (i'm lookin at you Lucas).

Interesting... what if this gets picked up for TV? I think the director needs to get in contact with HBO and the BBC asap!

Jeez, could the guy look any more unassuming? It's always the quiet ones.

Also- seventy-five hundred bucks? He put together a Hollywood-quality short for less than some used cars cost? That's some technical chops the guy has right there. Even if he doesn't get to make this particular movie happen, it's a smart studio that snaps him up and puts him to work.

I liked the short a lot. I wasn't pleased at first with lack of the mysticism angle, but hey, I wouldn't stop him if he has a full feature length deal in mind. If someone asked me how to make Mortal Kombat seem "more realistic" I'd have no clue where to start. This guy seems on the ball and he's a fan to boot. I'd give him the reigns any day. He'd do way better than, oh let's say, Uwe Boll.

His fan-made trailer has gotten a pretty incredible amount of views, i'd say generally pretty damn awesome reviews and opinions from the people who've seen it.

I mean anything that's had probably 3million+ views in a day or two must catch the attention of someone who's actually in-charge of the franchise reboot right?

Anyways I really liked it, wouldn't mind seeing if he can actually make a feature length film out of it.

He did all that with $7500? Someone give this guy a million and let us have a real movie. God knows we could use more directors like this guy.

[small]His $7500 mini-movie was better than Transformers 2...[/small]
