I have been a fan of the Mortal Kombat games since the first one arrived at the local arcade some 20 years ago (and was the only machine that had to be emptied of quarters twice a day). Never cared about the story, although I did read the character backgrounds for inspiration when trying to learn their moves. The games are about one thing: senseless, brutal violence. What sets them apart from all other such games is their unique and utterly awesome *style* of senseless, brutal violence, which Tancharoen has, in my humble opinion, masterfully recreated here in all its savage, bloody glory.
To me at least, watching that fight felt a lot like playing the game - as Johnny Cage
(my internal monologue):
Ow! Bastard! Ow!
Gotta time this right... yes!
Ha! Gotcha now, you crazy motherf-Ow!
Oops. Didn't see that coming...
This is gonna hurt.
Maybe I'll have better luck if I play as Sonya... probably not, but at least we'll get to see Jeri Ryan in spandex again
