For those curious as to what "deathcore" sounds like, here are a couple of videos from The Acacia Strain (back when they were good) and also Suicide Silence (who have always been terrible).

I listen to anything that's awesome...

Right now that's Korn, Avenged Sevenfold, Sum 41 and throw in some classic Spineshank for good measure.

Cookie to anyone who's heard of Spineshank before now.
*blows brains out with shotgun after sliting wrists and is made into album cover* "cookie to anyone who catches that reference" not my cup of tea.
Mayhem -Dawn Of The Black Hearts, now where is my cookie.
*hands over macadamian nut cookie* lol

I've already answered in a similar thread, so I'll do what I usually do, put everything in cataegories.

Death Metal: Bloodbath, Death, Morbid Angel, Suffocation, Atheist, Behemoth, Coldworker, Decapitated, Deicide, Decrepit Birth, Dying Fetus, The Faceless

Black Metal: Mayhem, Marduk, Burzum, Gorgoroth, Anaal Nathrakh, Wolves in the Throne Room

Melodic Death Metal: In Mourning, Insomnium, Gorod

Deathcore: The Contortionist, Permillisecond, the Plasmarifle, The Acacia Strain (guilty pleasure of mine), After the Burial, From the Shallows

Progressive: Between the Buried and Me, Opeth, Gojira, Garden of Shadows, Meshuggah, Kylesa, Iron Thrones, Neuraxis, The Ocean, Portal, Strapping Young Lad, Soreption, Trap Them, Volumes, Welkin, From A Second Story Window, Dillinger Escape Plan, Cynic

Post-Metal: Neurosis, Isis, Intronaut, Rosetta, Callisto

Metalcore: Converge, Botch, August Burns Red, The Binary Code

Instrumental: Blotted Science, Scale the Summit, Dysrhythmia

Old School: Iron Maiden, Slayer, Metallica, Anthrax, Megadeth
I'd say Gorod is more technical death metal than it is melodic. Also, BTBAM is an amazing band.
I noticed that too. If you listen to their newer album you can hear a lot of melodic riffage. And I saw BTBAM tour with Cynic, Devin Townsend Project, and Scale the Summit. BEST. CONCERT. EVER.

Death and thrash are my favourite genres, though my favourite bands are Fear Factory and Mastodon. I'll be seeing Iron Maiden in a few days...

As for what I DON'T like, metalcore. Ugh. Five Finger Death Punch and Bullet For My Valentine really are loathsomely bad. And the FANS.
Complete stab in the dark.. but "Iron Maiden in a few days" Sonisphere by any chance?

Also Five Finger Death Punch isn't that bad... though BFMV annoys me right now.
Sadly not, Dublin 02 Arena. Still psyched though.
I really hate Death Punch. The singer and bassist are complete morons. Music is crap generic metalcore, and the lyrics are either whiny or skull numbingly macho. So yeah.X_X
Ah I love them just because of the heavy beat. Bulletproof pumps me up straight away.

And shame I'm going to see Iron Maiden at Sonisphere in about 4 days \m/ twill hopefully be epic.

Mayhem? Whose band also made skull fragment necklaces from the leftovers?

I just realized that your avatar is the cover art for Vital Remains' "Dechristianize". Infidel is a great track.
Haha someone got it xD and yea the mayham story is badass i saw them with dead and without. dead was a good singer
Ah, that's unfortunate, then. It sucks to lose a vocalist in that genre, considering the derision you get from other vocalists. Interestingly enough, after a small display of the vocal style to a conventional singer, he thought it was great.

As to the cores, I've given them a fair chance and like a few songs by a couple of them. Though, as you say, it's best to avoid thme, if you can.
All about the same one one of the first of the new wave *some reason napalam death is considered but swear there more dm* but anyway its like whitechapel jfoc like that then other people found hey stupid teenagers who wouldnt know good music if any of the metal musicans whacked them in the face with their dicks ran up to them so lets make the same music have "breakdowns" and pretty neon colored shirts with shit on it =D
Wait, what? Napalm Death is grindcore, in fact, they invented the genre.

If memory serves, "Scum"-Napalm Death holds the record for the shortest song in history(Sitting at the brief time of three seconds).

That's the thing, yes. It almost feels like some of the bands nearly came to grips with Death Metal and stripped it of all the complexity. There are no signature tweaks, no overly complicated riffs. Like you said, the early generations were good but it didn't age very well.

Anyone else in Montreal this past weekend for Heavy MTL? In any case it was a great show headlined by Slayer, Megadeth and Testament. There were tons of other bands there(It was a two day festival) and apparently there were fireworks during Megadeth. I didn't notice because I couldn't hear them nor did I have space in the gigantic mosh -pit of a crowd to turn around and look for them.

Thought this'd be a decent place to get some recommendations. I'm not a big metal fan, it has to be said, but I like a bit of System of a Down and a couple of Metallica songs. If Lostprophets' early stuff counts then them to Generally my tastes tend to stick around pop-punk to melodic hardcore.

Just wondering if there are any other bands you could recommend really. Probably not - I've got quite specific tastes - but worth a shot eh?

Do you like Taking Back Sunday? They're not really metal, but they ARE pop-punk.

Also, a good band to get into metal with is Pelican. They are completely instrumental.

I'm actually not as huge into metal as I tend to let on. Mainly prog metal, going into progressive death. I also like 80s thrash, Black Sabbath (whatever they are), and the New Wave of British whatever Metal. Although metalcore can be very good if it's on the melodic side as well. Oh, and fusion metal is fucking awesome, or any metal with jazz influence. It's like peanut butter and chocolate.

My main problem with the more extreme metals is the constant pounding of the bass drum with 16th notes for 3 fucking minutes straight. It hurts my ears. Really bad. I can stand it in short bursts, but not for entire songs! Notice I said 80s thrash and not thrash in general, because thrash nowadays tends to be just that. Screaming can get over-the-top as well, but if it's not too bad, I'll deal with it.

By the way, as a side note, what's with the really short albums? I was looking into Born of Osiris and The Faceless because they were Death metal bands that I thought were good, but the albums were about 35 minutes long. What the hell? Looking at Massive Aggressive (Municipal Waste) right now, that album is 28:49! Carving Desert Canyons (Scale the Summit) was only 40 minutes long, but I thoroughly enjoyed all 40 minutes. That's not so with these guys. I'm not condoning piracy, but asking people to pay up $10 for 30-35 minutes of entertainment won't cut it unless the album is groundbreaking. Maybe I'm too used to my apparently extravagant hour long albums... [/metal related rant]

I don't consider myself a metal fan, as I favour the more stone-rock or ambient jazz soul punk side of things, but I do love the metal stereotype of Manowar lovin', leather wearin', beer-drinkin' rednecks going around screaming "METAAAAAAL!"

So I say to you:

LET US RISE UP AND SMITE THE PRETENDERS OF THE MUSIC LANDS! WE ALONE MUST DEFEND THE RIGHTEOUS FROM THE PATH OF SHITTY AUTOTUNE POP! BY THE SWORD IN MY HAND AND THE BEER IN MY GUT, WE SHALL FIGHT, AND MAY THE BLOOD OF YOUR CHILDREN RUN RED WITH THE UNDILUTED PISS OF MANY VIRGINS! DEATH TO ALL BUT METAL!

Ohhhhh, baby, right there...
If you like ambiet try karl sanders of niles solo shit Saurian Meditations/Saurian Exercisims. or blotted science if you love good metal sound *cannibal corpse bassist+ blind guardian gutiar+ death metal drums and no singing*
Karl Sanders is a balls guitarist.

... And not in a good way.

OT: Metal I am into, mainly progressive or mathcore, just the complicated stuff.
I don't mind death metal but it gets a little boring for me and also the growl a lot of the time is just some man kinda making a burping noise, which is, while funny, not nice to listen to.

Anything that's good, really.

Right now I'm immersed in Avenged Sevenfold, I can't get enough of their early Metalcore stuff. :D
