I'd say they're doing a fair job, seeing as the site is still up and running smoothly. That's all that matters, really.

They do fine, I suppose, but could do better. I understand that flame wars aren't welcome, but they'll oftentimes lock threads just on the prospect of them leading to heated arguments. Aren't debates exactly what discussion forums are supposed to be about?

A bit off-topic, but don't even get me started on a select few users we have who seem to think that their post count gives them a license to be pretentious jerks.

These two things are the main gripes I have with the Escapist forums.

I haven't run afoul. They keep the place from turning into a seething pit of rage that would force all normal people to move away for the site.

EDIT: who are all the mods anyway, i know there are six, but who are they on the site (what are their site names style of thing)?
There's more than six (14 if I'm right). There's six Red Guards, if you're referring to them, but they're only users who have proven themselves worthy of being mods, there's still the actual staff members. A full list of them's here [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.116827].

EDIT: As for how you become a mod, the staff will pick new moderators when they think they will need new ones, based on a user's ban history and also what that user has done on the Escapist Forums to make them worthy of becoming a mod.

I believe if you only have a couple posts and you do that they will ban you.
They won't ban you if you only have a couple of posts and do that. Most they'll do is suspend you. They used to ban people who said 'First!' though.

they do a great job.... and uhm I'm hoping for the day when a ZP video/comment thread has an entire first page of probations or bans. Sure it might piss off the mods, but it'll be funny to me.

I find it weird they got to constantly ban/probation ZP fans. His fans seem to be of the stupider variety.

I don't think of them much. They're alright I suppose. They do their job, I might not always agree with them, but that's their business not mine.

I think they are doing great on the escapist in both social and professional level.
I just wish youtube would have something like this. :(

I've actually challenged the moderators on several points and asked them questions, so I don't quite understand the "avoid talking to the mods" sentiment. They actually appreciate the questions. Even Nilcypher, who is known for being notoriously prickly on the Forums at times, is a really cool dude via PM: he just holds no truck with people who break the rules.

I got a badge for not incurring their wrath for 1000 posts. I'd like to keep it that way.

So far as I've seen, they do their job. *shrug* It's a big site with a lot of members.

the moderators control the government so if you speak ill of them you will be assassinated or banned on a more serious note i find that they are very fair and strict

I've never had a run-in with them, and i hope to keep it that way.
so i don't really have an opinion about them.

They are okay, but one of them locked my 1000th post thread, said there was no discussion. I asked in no less than 3 places for opinions, feedback, and I ended it as a story thread (you know, "continue the story"). Other than that, everything has been good between them and me.

God, i know i am going to get some kind of hammer thrown down upon me, but:

A lot of the times i feel the mods are too sensitive, and everytime someone says a little negative, yet true statement about them, they have to throw down the hammer, i understand it needs to be done to show off what they can do and try to impress all the girl users of the escapist, but sometimes they take it too far. Also, i've noticed that sometimes the crime does not fit the punishment, with users getting a perma-ban for a minor infraction. A lot of the time i get fed up with how things are run, but instead of taking it out by doing something stupid, i take a day or two to cool off.

Not a fan of 2 of them but the rest are pretty nice and stay in the backround.

They are the silent gods that watch from on high, infinite in their wisdom, but limited in their mercy.

I'll formulate a negative opinion when they do something nasty to me.
As long as I'm happy, everything is just fine.

The only thing that pisses me off is the mods don't explain why they do things before they do them. The mods are too lazy to put in a closing post when they lock a thread so that creates confusion amongst the community about what kinds of threads are allowed and what aren't. You can always pm the mods, obviously. Unfortunately they are usually pretty set in their decision and I have never seen a thread get unlocked because a mod realized they were in the wrong. Even the suspensions/probations could use a "reason" section on the bottom of the post that got them in trouble. All it says is "blankety mcblank was suspended for this post" and it's up to us to figure out why. Sometimes it's obvious, like if they called another user a pig fucker, but sometimes it isn't. Sometimes it's just one seemingly harmless sentence. I feel a great deal of new users could figure out what is allowed here and what isn't a lot faster if the mods simply explained why they did things when they did them. This has come up in a number of threads about the staff but none of them seem to give a damn what we think. I really like this website and I think the community here is better than on most forums I've been to but this is the one thing that really irks me.
