I think the Soul Calibur series is the most under-appreciated by the developers if that means anything...

Evil Genius for the PC. It is quite possibly the only game that allows you to play as a TRUE evil genius. You get your own underground volcano lair, hordes of minions, henchmen, torture devices (laser, shooting range, giant salad mixer) along with "the big red button"!

Couldn't agree more about Legend of Dragoon. It's what got me into JRPG's in the first place.
Legend of Dragoon is a classic, I got it after finishing FF9 when the last few PS RPG's were drying up. Class

also I loved the first 2 oddworld games, Abe's exodus and odyssey, very under appreciated

Kane & Lynch
Lost Odyssey
Psychonauts
Clive Baker's Undying

and maaany classics only the oldest among us remember (you know, the ones that had good writing and atmosphere). System Shock 2, Gabriel Knight, Thief, Little Big Adventure and Crusader can kick today's videogame crap single handedly.

Vampire the Masquarade: Bloodlines

I think it deserves more attention than it gets. Game has amazing atmosphere, good story, great gameplay and realy interesting (and unique?) view about vampires. Game depicts them as shadowy figures, living their own lives, known only as fairy tales for humans. And I really liked that in game they aren't just some beasts, craving only for blood. They are more humane than most people, drinking blood only because they must, in order to survive.

Biggest letdown for me was weak gunplay mechanics. Most weapons just feel weak and their design is mediocre. Also you must download a buch of paches, because game is extremely buggy.

But despite these flaws I really enjoyed the game and I really recommend it for anyone who likes (fps)rpgs.
This. It's a great game and I think more people should know about it

Also the Thief series, especially Thief 2

Psychonauts- funny as hell and great gameplay
Radiata Stories- very good story, nice gameplay, shitty ending
And these two, all great games that need more attention :)

The Gothic Series(Gothic I + II + Add-on, Gothic3 + Add-ons do not exist and if you say something different you're wrong!). It has beautiful combat(especially the second one), a really good story, a good and non-confusing character developement systems & many ways to go with your char(this means good replay value). And you know why it's not popular in the US? Because it hasn't an american level system(monster are always max. 1 or 2 levels above you, which makes it possible to kill the end boss at lvl 1). Ooooooh, can you little Halo addicted Yanks not cope with NPCs with fixed lvls who are stronger than you?
that's too bad, you can't finish a challenging game. Bad for you.

Lots of good choices so far on this forum.. I would add Vagrant Story for PSX. Loads of fun, great story, a non-emo lead character in an action/RPG.

Mafia for PS2. It is sorely under appreciated especially when people call it a Godfather the game clone. Even though it came out before it.

4. Super Dodge Ball (NES) I mean really, why was there never a sequel to this gem? Or even another game like it on any system since? C'mon!.
there was a GBA port or sequel I remember http://uk.gamespot.com/gba/sports/superdodgeballadvance/index.html

And also I'm going to say Crackdown(Xbox360) because it was bought for the beta and ignored for being fucking awesome....and also Halo(CE,2 and 3) and for the future ODST,Reach and so forth

Psi-Ops the Mindgate Conspiracy. If you own a Xbox or PS2 go to eBay right now and buy it. It will be the best 15 USD you will ever spend.

I third that pick. Great RPG that didn't get the recognition it deserved.

Jet Set Radio, great game but most people thought it was a skating version of Tony Hawk.
Another one that was amazing but died, for the most part, with the Dreamcast :( *R.I.P little buddy).

But my personal pick will be FF8. That is one of my favorite games of all time. It was hard for it to follow FF7 (which I think is a tad overrated, but thats another thread entirely :p) and it still got a good reception but not as good as I think it should have.

I also want to throw the original Syphon Filter in there as well. Great game, underrated.

Do you know if it's backwards compatible on 360?
