Probably Betamax, HdDVD, minidisc and all the other failed formats. Somewhere in the world is man with every James Bond film up to that point on beta, with a broken player, quietly sobbing at his wasted investment.

Annoyingly most of these formats need never have existed if the people dreaming them had stepped back and looked at what other people were making. Against CD's, DVD's and MP3 players what muppet thought minidiscs would be marketable?

Tell you what, when you get to be in charge of The Escapist, you can delete all the threads you don't like as much as you want, how's that sound? In the meantime, why don't you at least pretend to try to come to terms with the fact that you are not an authority?

Anyway, most useless thing ever created. That would be probably about 99% of text document formats, specifically e-book formats. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_e-book_formats

Why would publishers (and indeed reader-makers) cut themselves off at the knees with a proprietary format? What's wrong with just using either .txt (like Project Gutenberg) or .pdf like nearly every instruction manual ever put on a manufacturer's website? I'm not one for monopolies, but unless your format can guarantee a greater accessibility, portability, and/or longevity, it's a self-indulgence at best and a failure mechanism at worst.
