I'm a bit puzzled as to why so many professional web designers seem to be so in love with white as a background. I'm sure it's fine when they look at it in a brightly-lit office but in a somewhat darker environment all that brightness makes one's eyes bleed.

Also, is anyone else having problems with the Captcha? Specifically, that you are asked to enter one, but the actual Captcha image never loads?

the only real big thing I took notice to was how bright it is and how I kinda wish there were different skin optins to make it less bright.

and everytime I see this thread i keep thinking it says the new shitty escapist for some reason. XD

Im sorry to continue harping. Still am not bothered by the retina burning white (which is compounded brighter blue banners and bright blue fonts) anywhere near as much as the script/flash issues that refuse to display latest/most ect.

I also do not quite understand why exactly if your on your profile page why must you be forced to utilize flash menus in order to access webshows like ZP and Jimquisiton. (However I dont mind so much when I notice it also removes the two shows from Moviebob, so I guess every negative design choice has a silver lining)

Im not a Luddite. I actually like change usually. I still have yet to see anything that has been improved here. It looks very superficial. Given theres 22 pages with a general consensus complaining about it, it stands to reason it might be a good idea to make lightning quick modifications to improve usability, and restore functionality that has been lost, or to restore the old layout until the idea is taken back to the drawing board and the bugs worked out before a relaunch.

I have got a pretty good idea why this has been changed, and I get the strong impression it has basically nothing to do with the aesthetics of the old layout.

Fair enough. This is exactly the answer I thought I might get. Thank you for confirming it. As for the other person...

Ah cool, that's fine then :)

I was worried that I was coming across as trying to sound superior over non-PubClub users. Which I obviously wasn't, because all PubClub users have been warned that using the PubClub as any kind of leverage or argument point is a no no, and oh god I'm doing it again xD
I'm just going to stop now, but thanks for understanding :)
No sweat. Thanks for contrabootin' and clarafiyn'.

I have to admit, if the Publisher's Club members approved this, then I don't think they really care. No one is naive enough to not notice an aspect 98% of the people here are complaining about (the brightness). Sorry, but the facts are there to back me up.
Be reasonable; the PubClub could well have raised issues that the Escapist, in their better 'judgement', turned down in the end. The article makes no mention of 'approval' by the PubClub for the new format, only that they've taken on their 'feedback'.

There's no guarantee that they've implemented all the updates to this incarnation of the website yet, either. Just relax, and don't be so ready to paint bulls-eyes, Mr Facts man.

Not only are you unnecessarily aggressive, but also wrong. I never said it was the Publisher's Club members fault. Its not like they were the ones to make the change anyways. All I was saying was that I hoped it was brought up before this new layout was installed, since it is the most prevalent problem.
Take it easy, chum, and read my post again.

I asked you to "be reasonable" and to "relax"; no mention of blame, accusations or fault. You questioned the attitude of the PubClub guys (assuming their 'approval' of the new features) based solely on the outcome of this new format and I called you out on that.

I've read the responses from other escapists about that same comment of yours and they're also worded in defence of PubClub; that no such 'approval' was given. So why my comment attracted so much of your ire, I can't imagine. If you were fed up of hearing it already and 'Mr Facts man' was enough to tip you over the aggro-meter, then that's your problem Andrew, not mine.

You didn't pay attention to the wording of the article and assumed PubClub might be making life hard for you. You didn't read my wording either and assumed I was hell-bent on burying you in accusations. (Granted, intonation is a hard thing to pass through typed words) Nothing of the sort, chum. You seem a little too ready to see enemies around every corner - chill out. And that's my last word on the subject.
Looks like you're taking this the wrong way. All I implied was that members of the Publishers Club would have a consistent complaint to the new design and it might get changed. Since all I could do was question, the was no insult to Pub Club members or even anybody at all! I was simply stating a thought that occurred to me Now please stop quoting me and implying that I'm too being far too edgy and that I can't understand your wording (though I am pretty darn sure I know the English language enough to do it). One more thing, please stop calling me chum. It feels degrading and it also rhymes with scum.

EDIT: Also stop turning my words around. There is no need for spin-doctors here.

There is WAY too much white. However, I do like the new thing on the homepage that shows where you most recently posted. Though it's entirely possible that you've always had that and I just never noticed before.

I liked the old main page better because the blocks of news were right there in easy, recognizable areas. Ill just have to get used to this.

Just taking a look at the "new site"'s source shows how amateurish it was built. Really, javascript everywhere, you need to keep that stuff in one or two js files and minify it this will increase load time. I'm sure the SQL code can't be too well formatted for high traffic since the site is constantly dieing and loading slow as a slug.

But for all that is holy just put in a fuckin blue background god damn it takes a minute to do and yet here we are 2 days away and the same blinding shit. How many people do you need to tell you that they can't view the site without a headache. /ragequit!

I DON'T LIKE CHANGE!!!!!! D:

I think the new features are great but the bright whiteness gives it an almost unfinished look.
Oh well no use crying over changed web-pages I'll get used to it I'm sure.

New website is absolutely and utterly mobile device unfriendly. The previous was bad enough, but this is plain unusable.

Whatever new font you're using, either Chrome hates it, or my system isn't rendering them right. And either way, it's alternating in line thickness between three or four pixels to fifty or sixty. It's rather difficult to read.

I used to read The Escapist, then I took a flashbang to the face.

Ok ok...

I like it, when the Publishers Club members got early access to it I wasn't sure about at first. After trying it out for the last few days I've got used to it and I love it now.
The same thing happened to me. I thought I would switch back and then never wanted to.
...

I question the choice for your new avatar -.-
I guess @ThyNameIsMud got enough bribes to change Nasrin's profile pic.

The good news is that when I saw it I didn't automatically and unconditionally hate it.

The bad news is that I've been waiting more than 12 hours to actually see it.

I think the reason everyone is complaining (myself included) is because the site's new look is crap compared to the old one. That's why this is being met with universal contempt. The old layout didn't require sunglasses or a monitor dimmed to the lowest setting. It was simple, easy to navigate. The new one feels like a maze.

Other websites have changed there layout for the worse, we don't want to see it happen to the escapist too.

Actually this is like watching a close friend ditch everything that made him who he is in favor of being more like those other kids at school. Y'know, the one's that are jerks and should be scorned yet somehow get away with everything. This feels so much more personal because the escapist was one of my favorite websites. Now, a 404 include ponies and a Skyrim "arrow to the knee" reference. it just feels so immature and unprofessional.

Case and point.
The expression is "case in point."
I knew someone was going to correct me on that. Next time, I'll be more careful not to make any mistaeks. Honest question: Why's everyone lax on grammar but strict on idioms on this site?

Far too facebook-ish...

And I hate how the borders have gone from the forums... its weird...
I challenge you to find someone who prefers this site who didnt work on it
I like the idea, but not the execution. Also, I prefer the new Facebook and Youtube designs.
Anyway, I don't know what the new Facebook layout looks like but the new Youtube one, eh, I don't know--I don't hate it but I don't particularly like it either. This site's layout, though, is far too empty. Yet my computer feel's like it's loading a 15 gig video file every time I try to go to a new page. Shockwave crashed, too, for, like, the first time since I started using Chrome.

Hopefully that's not an ongoing thing. I've only been skimming this topic so maybe I've missed some but I haven't seen, really, any wholly positive things about this change. The most positive are people like you saying, basically, it's a good concept but badly done. Does anyone totally like this change?
