I was confused at first, because the article was in no way differentiated from a news story, but got pleasantly surprised afterwards.
Still, I do believe your decision making on the issue is poor. Adaptations are just another way to get into something. Do you want to see an adaptation? Go see it, that's what it's made for! Then, if you like it and/or still need to, go seek out the original! It's all entertainment, isn't it? What's the point of turning it into a chore? When you're dealing with an unchanged story, whatever way you start it's going to be repeated. That's not spoiling, it's the reality of wishing to see the same thing twice vie different mediums. So, my opinion is you should first see whichever version is the most exciting to you at the moment. That way you'll enjoy the content the most. As for the second time, you either have the capacity and/or opportunity to enjoy that same content in another shape because it's in another shape (in which case, good for you, you get twice the fun!), or you don't (in which case, why force yourself to be something you're not?).
Now, when in-story continuity is concerned, like with the Lost finale, I absolutely share your views. I always watch my TV series from the beginning and in fact dislike watching them with people who jump in midway. But that comes from me being more satisfied by each episode when watching them like this and in the end not caring if it takes time to catch up. Adaptations, reimaginings and so on work differently, though. It's all about the present with them.
Thanks for the piece and helping me to flesh out my thoughts!

From the two episodes I've seen, they're changing quite a bit of the story, while keeping key concepts. I think this is good, in the comic there was a lot of tension, because anyone could die and most comics ended with a sinister ending, that made you want to keep reading. But at the same time if it was 100% identical it get powerful boring.

I can't wait till Rick becomes the genre savvy bastard I love from the later comics.

Ha! We're not alone!
Heck, I have cable TV, I could watch it on stream, even my brother did one hell of a propaganda on me for that show and you know what? I won't watch it cause I can't give a damn about zombies. I even avoid every zombie related program, game, shirts, whatever. (with some rare exceptions)
They don't enjoy me and probably never will. Anti-Zombie squad UNITE!

I'm not going to watch it because I went to school with the guy playing Rick. It just doesn't work when you know his real surname is Clutterbuck.

I hate spoilers as much as you do, but im the opposite when it comes to adaptations. If like alot film adaptations of comics (watchmen, kick-ass, scott pilgrim, v for vendetta... or even the walking dead), if the film has introduced me to it, then i'll make a point to watch the film first, and then hunt out the comic and read it (i do this with anime's aswell, if i like the anime i'll hunt out the manga)

Augh! I'm really interested in this, but I can't view it. :(

For some reason, its not available to view in Singapore, even online. Anyone got any ideas?

I'm not going to watch the series because the comic began to irritate me very quickly. I gave up on it around the time I realized what the 3 biggest threats to the survivors actually were.

3rd place: Zombies

2nd placE: Other survivors.

1st place: Disagreeing with the central character over anything at any time.

I'm really ashamed I haven't seen it yet, as I've read most of the comics, AND it takes place in my hometown. (Atlanta).

The first season of the walking dead is only going to be able to fit in the stuff that happens in the first book.

The first (double-length) episode reached a third of the way. So that's one sixth per episode. And it was announced that there's only going to be 5 or 6 episodes in the first season anyway. So you don't really have to do too much reading to get through the first season.

Personally, i'm not going to read any more of the books because i want to watch what happens. I wouldn't usually do this but i don't really like the books. I know that it's petty, but i can't stand reading a greyscale graphic novel. And right now, for once, i'm annoyed that i know what's going to happen in the next few episodes. I want to be suprised when someone dies!

Learned about the comic when i heard everyone talking about the show. (Namely the SC2 casters like DJWheat and Day[9]} so i went and read the Comic.

Episode 1 of AMC The Walking Dead is verbatim the same as Issue #1 & #2 except for the very last 5 minutes. :D

Robert Kirkman have said that its not a direct page by page retelling of the Comic! so if you havent read the Comic you will still enjoy the show. He has given his seal of approval that the feel of the Show is the same as the feel of the Comic. So far, i would agree.

I prefer to enjoy the adaptation before the original work, because I don't want to be one of those "they didn't do it EXACTLY like the book jerks. I feel like those people want to have this feeling of achievement over those who didn't go out and read the book, but I have no entertainment OCD like that.

I have read some Walking Dead before seeing the TV series, but I don't care. I think this series will continue to be good, and I don't care about any changes, at least not so far.

read the article and was still uninterested. i guess there is officially more than just one who will be intentionality avoiding it. am i the only person in the world who truly doesn't care about zombies!? real zombies are of demonic magic and cannot be "killed" with a head-shot. there also are never hoards of them. they are eternal guardians that have to be fully destroyed and purified to be removed from existence. they are not a ravenous mob of diseased. all zombies are boring!

I don't like people like Elizabeth, who feel that they have to become gurus about anything they read/watch/play. Must have way too much free time if you feel you gotta read every book/comic behind every game or movie...

Well, if she is going to want to watch the S.T.A.L.K.E.R series, she is going to have to read the books which the movie was based off; watch the moveie the games were based off; then finally play all the games the TV series will be based off. She wont have any time to spare!

I think this sums it up pretty nicely.

http://xkcd.com/606/

All that aside, I think that you have a unique opportunity to experience this show for the first time in a mini-series format. The medium really lends itself well to the material. A tense moment can drag itself much longer on film than it can in the frame of the graphic novel. Works great with zombies at least! Once you get hooked, finish this season and then plow through the graphic novel in anticipation for the next one. Get a taste of both I say!
