I was writing a good answer to a now locked thread, and it did get me thinking a bit. Most sites and magasines apply the "out of 10" rating system, feel free to post candidates of the perfect 10 games, but, what would you consider the criteria for your perfect ten, and how is this different from what you think the mainstream market would consider one? Also a number of reviews don't tend to judge a game for being "fun" they only look at lifetime, graphics, gameplay and other things describing it as good or bad.

For example I don't think multiplayer should effect the overall score, but, I know that wouldn't fly in the mainstream reviews. Also I don't think I could name a perfect 10 game, I honestly don't think there is a perfect game out and about.

So what makes up your perfect 10? How is it different to mainstream, and by your criteria, what is a ten if there are any?

IMO, the closest thing to a perfect 10/10 would be Garry's Mod, since it basically is EVERYTHING you could ever want. Platformer, FPS, TPS, RPG, random indie games, CTF, hell there's probably even an RTS gamemode for it somewhere. It has anything you could want, it's fairly simple to get mods for, and is generally just an entertaining game.

Also, thanks OP. I'm now motivated to play Gmod now.

I don't think any game deserves a perfect ten. There is always something wrong. And scores are usually opinionated as well. One persons perfect game is the worst game in the world to another person.

For my perfect score, the game needs to be: Creative, long (but not overstaying its welcome), fun, challenging (but not too hard), have good multiplayer, have good controls, have a good story, have new features that make me go "I should have thought of that!", and be good looking graphic or artistic wise.

I don't think a perfect 10 game is possible. I think a P10, if you will, would have to be a game that is universally loved by everyone, that has nothing that a critic could complain about, which stems from the fact that its PERFECT. If something is perfect, there are no flaws to critique by anyone. I have games that I feel are perfect, but I know they aren't because everyone on the planet doesn't share my opinion.

This makes me think of Edge magazine who had a reputation for not giving out many 10s and did a few articles about "the perfect 10 score." Even they said that there is no such thing as a perfect 10 and a 10 game is just an exceptionally good game.

Edge tend to mark down for complexity and flaws while marking up for advancing the state of the art. I don't always care about the state of the art, am willing to ignore flaws and love complexity so most Edge scores are not worth the expensive glossy paper they are written on for me.

I would give games a 10 based on how engaging they are how good they make me feel.

From current gen games, I would give a "perfect 10" to No More Heroes, Spelunky, Super Mario Galaxy, Rez HD, World of Goo, and Braid. Some asshole could tell me that these games all have flaws or do not have enough polygons or something but they all had my 100% attention when playing them and I'm pretty fond of them.

For me there don`t exist perfect games because you can improve graphics and sound.
But I have games I consider flawless like:

Portal
Chrono Trigger
Super Metroid / Metroid III

well not really, we are talking VIDEO games here, go back to your balls, underdeveloped person.
I am kidding though, a perfect 10 is not impossible it's hard.
and my 10 is probably Crysis, Fallout3, and Bioshock,
(notice how these are all FPS's, I just like shooting stuff)

Why are they your perfect 10's? What criteria has each of those games cleaned house with, try not to answer I don't know, or I can't quantify it, I wanted criteria for what would be your perfect game, then, try to find a game that you have played that matches it. You might find it's none of the ones you've already listed.

Neither do I, but I want to generate discussion on what you think a game with a perfect score would be. Then how it's different from say, Games Master or IGN, then to see if there is a game you know of that fits your neish.

You pretty much summarised the point to my thread, but can you now think of a, or the game that scores perfectly for your own criteria?

Well The Bards Tale exceeds the "Games that are made to be funny", even if its incredibly difficult.

SLAI is just excellent, you would have to play it to understand.

The Baldurs Gate games are self explanatory. I'm an RPG fan, and they did everything right.

Sigh if I must.

Hercs adventures as it had a truly unique story line was an epic action adventure game and to my knowledge has never been recreated as it was a fairly unknown game.

Hogs of war was a turn based fps that required a certain amount of skill to play, the learning curve was quite decent, it had a unique story line, was in the worms style of play as in you had the turned based goes and you had the different people each time, in short it's like worms but you upgrade your people when they get enough kills,

Vandal hearts 1 and 2 were classic turn based strategy at its greatest, is like the shining force games which I shall also add to my list, the story was fairly clichéd, but this was one of the earlier games of it's kind before this kind of stuff hit mainstream and I have replayed it again last month and still am in love with the game.

Hows that?

Back to front, you have picked your favourite games and listed why, the tread was to try and make you think what makes your perfect game up, you'll be lucky if your criteria hits more than one game, let alone crosses the genre gap.

EDIT: My threads are supposed to be annoying thought provoking. Search "The Devils greatest trick...."

I'm getting fairly tired of this now.
People can infer what makes my perfect game up. Here is a list for you

Good story
unique game style
Single player

There we are.

EDIT: feel free to post candidates of the perfect 10 games I think I remember you putting that in your original post and I think you will find I have done just that

I think that 10/10 doesn't necessarily mean "perfect" but rather, an outstanding game or an instant classic. It's impossible for a game to be perfect, but I suppose 10/10 would mean a "must buy and play over and over and over again"

I have some almost undisputable perfect 10s right here:

Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (snes)

Resident Evil 4 (GC)

Ico (PS2)

Mario 3 (NES)

Street Fighter 2

They are perfect tens in that everything they try to achieve technically, gameplay and story wise, they do flawlessly.
