So the good news is that it looks like it's gonna be a real powerful machine for once. The SSD should do wonders for load and install times, however the potential size of the drive worries me. The backwards compatibility is fantastic, though it's a feature that should have NEVER gone away from consoles (at least disc-based ones because a backwards compatible Nintendo would be a nightmare of cartridge holes).

Looks like we'll see it next year. And I'm looking forward to it.

That is not fantastic backwards compatibility. Only one generation back is pissweak.

Honestly all Nintendo has to do is genuinely commit to a virtual console that actually includes all the games from previous systems, and it'd be all I ever needed (I'd understand if Wiimote games were excluded though). To date, those first-gen PS3s still had by far the best backwards compatibility we've seen.

"Cerny presses a button on the controller, initiating a fast-travel interstitial screen. When Spidey reappears in a totally different spot in Manhattan, 15 seconds have elapsed. Then Cerny does the same thing on a next-gen devkit connected to a different TV. (The devkit, an early ?low-speed? version, is concealed in a big silver tower, with no visible componentry.) What took 15 seconds now takes less than one: 0.8 seconds, to be exact. . . "

I don't see how Gen 9 can get prettier but that is amazing stuff there!

I recall us all saying we will never bother with a PS4 as things cannot get better enough to justify the purchase. Then when we got into the 4, someone litterally wrote that they now could see what a cluncky device it was. (I recently was playing Last of Us on PS3. Really long load times. This sounds very promising.

I find it good enough that its backwards compatible with at least the PS4.

PS4 has a massive library of games I wanna play right now. Especially exclusives.

And some games I prefer playing a PS4 then a PC like One Piece World Seeker.

To be fair most of my hype now is coming from the long line of incredible great exclusive games that the PS4 has enjoyed since damn near it's launch. I hope the trend continues with the PS5 as surely it'll see the FF7 remake, God of War 5, And a Horizon sequel which alone will be easily enough for me to want the device, let alone any other surprises that might be on the other side of the generation gap.

The PS3 is hard as hell to emulate, I don't even think a majority of PS3 games are playable on a PC via emulators. That's why the PS4 was never going to be backwards compatible with PS3 unless it used the same architecture. The PS4 and Xbone being x86 this gen makes it super likely that both next-gen consoles will be backwards compatible. If the PS5 could read DVDs, I don't see why PS2 emulation couldn't be possible.

Chances are details will change yet before launch as it?s kinda brash to reveal official specs this early on. Still cool to hear it?s going to be focusing on beefier specs this time around. I?ve resorted to being a late adopter though so I?ll be pleasantly watching things unfold from the sidelines, watching the library build and the prices drop.

Pretty cool. Those ultra short loading times sound like heaven to me. Backwards compatible with PS4 also sounds really good. Hopefully this also counts for PSN games. No longer need to keep old console around and PS5 will already have a huge catalogue. Can't wait to see more and hopefully an official reveal with some teasers soon.

Honestly, I will more than likely pick on up at some point, but it won't be at launch unless my PS4 breaks down. I think I'll do what I did with the PS4 and wait until it has enough games I want to play where I can't ignore it anymore.

I just hope that all the success this gen has not gone to Sony's head and they go and make really stupid mistakes on the run up to release.

Really? Because I remember playing Ratchet and Clack and Metal Gear Solid 3 on a first gen and it wasn't pretty. You had your God of War 2 and Shadow of the Colossus looking terrific, but plenty of other PS2 games looked like shit.

Anyway, I'm glad we're getting the backwards compatability that we are, since most of my favourite games on PS3 have remasters for the PS4 (except ofcourse Infamous 1 and 2 *fingers crossed*). But if Sony would be so kind to actually put PS1 classics on their new store, that's be great. I'd hate it if I couldn't play MGS1 anymore because my PS3 bit the dust.

I'm glad PS4 backwards compatibility is a thing, and I've longed accepted that the PS3 is a part of gaming history that I'm going to miss out on until I shell out for a used one, but I really would appreciate PS2 and PS1 backwards compatibility. Sony SAID that they were going to patch it into the PS4 and never did.

Also, I'm a tad bit worried about the cost, considering that they're planning on putting in some really shiny tech into this one.

Tech gets cheaper every year and this is still 18 months out. I wouldn't imagine them going much higher than the Ps4Pro, if at all. I would expect a $400 dollar tag on this easy. Maybe $500 tops but I don't know about that, I think they'd rather take a little loss on the system (most consoles are sold at a lost at release anyway) and try to get it into as many homes as possible out the gate. Especially since it's always a hard sell to install a new system into homes than have the existing hardware.

Sounds pretty good. I mentioned before that if the news console has PS4 backwards compatibility, I'd entirely skip that generation. If these first details are true, guess I get my wish.

There isn't really a distinction between "disc games" and "PSN games" anymore, is there? For as far as I know, all disc games are available digitally through the PS Store since the PS4 launched, "games that haven't seen a disc release" would be a weird distinction to make nowadays.

No matter how beefy the specs of a console, certain people will start whining about "better" hardware 3-4 years into the console's life cycle in any case, so as a late adopter you'll always be hearing the "ermagerdz, consoles so weak!!!! My 2 month old graphics card is better than 4 years old hardware!" complaints.

Lack of interest in PS2 emulation by the general public.

Also, when you're emulating a game on your computer, you can fiddle with settings a bit and you don't mind if you encounter graphical glitches because you are emulating after all, but when Sony provides an emulation service consumers would expect it to work near flawlessly and this kind of quality control is a pain in the arse, especially considering the PS2 massive library. And some games would even be straight up "broken" if the PS5 controller doesn't have pressure sensitive buttons like the PS2 controller did.

Yeah, indeed. I only wonder if it's gonna be the same store but updated with PS5 or if these are gonna be separate accounts with an entirely new store(similarly like PS3/4, which is technically the same account but different store and PS3 games obviously aren't interchangeable). I definitely hope they are going for continuity and just update the current store with PS5 and keep everything as is. Quite a few games on PS4 I'm very fond of and it would be very convenient to have them all in one place.

I'm pretty sure the store is going to be the same, it has been one and the same store since it launched in 2006. Although maybe the store app on PS5 might provide a separate PS4 section to help the PS5 software pop out more, wouldn't want new releases drowning in the PS4's big back log.

Open the store on your computer and you can find software for the PSP, PSVita, PS3 and PS4.

I'm not sure about memory this time around.

I'd imagine, if it's SSD, that the cost to keep more than 10 games on the system is going to be NUTS.

Then again, ya never know.

I kind of wish they'd embrace the cartridge.
Not having massive mandatory installs on a 4K machine would be LOVELY.
