I'm really excited by this news. It means that in a relatively short amount of time the market is going to be flooded with cheap PS4 consoles and games as people look to cash out in order to jump to the next generation.

I really don't mind being a generation behind when there is going to be a large back catalogue of games to play.

I'm glad PS4 backwards compatibility is a thing, and I've longed accepted that the PS3 is a part of gaming history that I'm going to miss out on until I shell out for a used one, but I really would appreciate PS2 and PS1 backwards compatibility. Sony SAID that they were going to patch it into the PS4 and never did.

Also, I'm a tad bit worried about the cost, considering that they're planning on putting in some really shiny tech into this one.

Sure.

Granted in hindsight they were a little vague on the issue.

I expect the return of the boomerang!!!

It honestly looks like what people in the 90's thought that future gadgets would look like.
Style over practicality :p
I still think it would have been better than the Dualshock 3. God the Dualshock 3 is a piece of shit.

That is not fantastic backwards compatibility. Only one generation back is pissweak.
The PS3 is hard as hell to emulate, I don't even think a majority of PS3 games are playable on a PC via emulators. That's why the PS4 was never going to be backwards compatible with PS3 unless it used the same architecture. The PS4 and Xbone being x86 this gen makes it super likely that both next-gen consoles will be backwards compatible. If the PS5 could read DVDs, I don't see why PS2 emulation couldn't be possible.
I'll grant you that PS3's Cell technology is hard as balls to emulate (still no excuse for Sony though), but the lack of compatibility for the PS1 and 2 libraries is just pathetic.

As iconic as the design is, I think we need to accept that MS pretty much invented the 'best practice' for controller design with the 360 Controller. Sony's new controller needs an ergonomic update fucking badly.

It was just the same design since PS1.

Though of course the R2/L2 buttons were the issue here. In vain attempt to make them feel like Triggers.

That doesn't state that they were going to patch in PS2 and PS1 backwards compatibility, just that they were looking to emulate PS2 games on PS4, something which they achieved through their PS2 on PS4 program where you can buy "updated" PS2 games that run at 60fps, higher resolution and have Trophy support.

I'm not sure about memory this time around.

I'd imagine, if it's SSD, that the cost to keep more than 10 games on the system is going to be NUTS.

Then again, ya never know.

I kind of wish they'd embrace the cartridge.
Not having massive mandatory installs on a 4K machine would be LOVELY.
Still too expensive compared to "simple" discs, isn't it?

This is an interesting article. I really hope that Sony's not trying to reinvent gaming by taking away even more control from players, which is something that Microsoft is obviously moving towards. And it was their attempt back when they announced the Xbone. I doubt that they learned their lesson. They'll be trying that shit again next time, I'm sure. Sony though, I really hope that they'll simply focus on improving those aspects of console gaming, and gaming in general, that have plagued gaming systems forever, with loading times being a key aspect.

The DS4 is a significant step up tho. I actually think I like it a little better than the 360 controller. Haven't used a Xbone (Elite) controller, so can't judge if those are better.

Xbox One and Switch Pro Controller are 10 x better than DS4. the xbox one controller (standard. i haven't tried the elite) is the comfiest controller and has a headphone jack and analogue triggers. although you need to buy double A batteries for unless you buy a seperate charger which sucks balls

Switch Pro controller is pretty much the same design as the Xbox One controller but it does have analogue triggers or a headphone jack and overall is SLIGHTLY less comfy than the xbox one controller. the Switch Pro controller kicks both the Xbox One Controller and the PS4 controllers ASS when it comes to battery life. it has a rechargeable battery that when fully charged can last around 40 hours total,

DS4 is uncomfy as fuck, has shit battery life and a stupid blue light on the back of it.

The DS4 is fantastic. I have the Xbone Elite Controller and the DS4 is better imo. The Xbox controllers lose sync all the time and eat batteries like a bastard. Meanwhile the DS4 can run for 8 hours easy without needing to be plugged in and if you are playing for so long that the DS4 runs out of battery in a single session, then you need to go outside. Nightly charges, and break charges throughout a day off will ensure you never have a battery issue.

If the XB1 Elite controller didn't have sync issues, it would be better than the DS4 imo because it just feels better. But I personally like the DS4 controller as it is the only one that hasn't given me issues.

Feels quite comfy to me. Nice size and weight, buttons feel good and are easy to reach whether I'm playing with my hands or feet. The light is kind of annoying, but I'm using my DS4 on PC, so I just turn it off with DS4windows or into whatever color I want. And the battery life doesn't bother me, cuz I detest having to recharge or change batteries, so I run it wired. Guess you don't get the same mileage. That's ok tho.

The Switch Pro is nice too tho. I'd rate it the best controller Nintendo has made so far. Yes, far, far better than the Gamecube controller. There, I said it. Deal with it. Maximum sass!

Hmm, I though VR was going to play a bigger role in the PS5s design? Looks like VR is going to continue to remain optional rather then central. Which may be for the best as VR tech doesn't seem quite there yet.

^Agree.

I have both a xbox360 and a ps4, and while the xbox 360 controller is ~slightly~ more ergonomic, it does eat batteries like a mofo. The ability to just plug in and recharge the dualshock4 controller puts it ahead in my book. It actually surprised me how ergonomic the dualshock4 is, it doesn't look very ergonomic, but when I hold it it just fits nicely.

I think it's kinda funny that both MS and Sony trade off on stupid controller designs. MS with their horrible xbox 1 giant controller, and Sony with their ps3 boomerang.

I wonder if this heralds a wider tech announcement in some new storage tech, although is does sound very specifically worded.

Sony did not reveal the SSDs specs or manufacturer. PlayStation 5 lead system architect Mark Cerny did say, however, that its raw bandwidth should exceed that of what?s currently available for PCs.

nah gamecube controllers way more comfy than the Pro controller. the only thing the gamecube controller needs to make it perfect is a home buttom and a screenshot/record button, that could be used with more modern console like the switch. that's it.

I mean the Ps controller basically hasn't changed a fucking thing since it launched. If it ain't broke, don't fucking fix it.

Remember the fat sack of trash the OG Xbox had? That thing was like holding a controller the size of your head (roughly the size of an American Cheeseburger).

The N64 controller had an extra dildo on it because Japan thought people had three hands for some reason. The Gamecube controller was better, but only by comparison to the shit device that came before it.

Sony is the only company that nailed the design the first time and stuck to it. Minor additions and alterations, but the shape and feel has never changed.

The Sony controller was fine in the pre-analogue stick days but I find the DS3/4 have them too close together and it makes my hand cramp to use them for more than an hour. The 360 controller on the the hand, I can use comfortably for several hours on end. Maybe if you have smaller hands the spacing on the Dual Shocks are fine, but in my gorilla paws, no dice.
