The possible American ban on selling violent games to minors?

Honestly the "ban selling M rated games to kids law" makes its rounds every year (at least in California), and every year the laws are found unconstitutional and both sides prepare for the next cycle of this. I really wouldn't pay these laws any credence or give them any real chance of being passed. Courts have found time and time again (When Jackie boy was a lawyer he did at least 5 of these these laws/cases every year) that any laws banning the sale of M rated games is unconstitutional because it is censorship of both freedom of speech and freedom of expression. M games will probably never be banned, because if you can't pass the law when the majority of judges and lawmakers AREN'T gamers, it will be nigh on impossible to pass them when they are.

It won't pass. These kinds of things never do, so I stopped caring about them. Even if they did, there's not much that's going to stop me from buying m-rated games for my non-existent children.

wow you get carded i have walked into a store and bought A rated games when I'm under 18.
Considering no stores even possess A rated games but stores that specialize in this type of thing (ie, porn stores), I question the truthiness of this post.
this was at the time GTA 3 was made A rated cause of the hot coffee mod.

I can't believe some of the stupidity in this thread. Someone below the age of at least 15 shouldn't be playing/watching/listening to/looking at/etc./etc. material that is aimed at a mature audience. Youth is impressionable, there's no point denying that, so they need to be kept away from material that may impress the wrong values or traits upon them.

Common arguments here and why they're retarded.

They can't enforce it: Which of course means they shouldn't try. Just like how parents buy their underaged children shitloads of booze and let em get drunk at a friends house.

They'll just pirate it: see above

Fake IDs/Not getting caught etc.: see above

Its the parents responsibility: And yet who is the victim? Its not the parents, its the child. Yes parents should be competent enough to make the right decisions for their children, but in some cases they aren't, so I applaud the government for wanting to step in.

Well, kids buying video games above their rating should be illegal.

Parents buying their kids the game however, nothing wrong with that.

My Gamestop always checks to see if the game is M rated or not, my Blockbuster will rent and sell M games without checking, it really depends on the store but some people dont understand that kids realize that theres a difference between games and real life

I'm not living in the USA soooooo.. sucks to be you guys.
The whole censorship to minors deal is pretty much nonexistent where I live.
Here they expect the parents to do some actual parenting (gasp).

Just saw a news report that said that it will possibly illegal for youngsters to buy violent games, and for adults to buy them for kids). People could actually get jail time for it. To me, it's a load of bollocks. I can name the several reasons why this is arbitrary, stupid, and a bunch of other mean adjectives. I hope that it will not come to Sweden, or at least not until I'm 18, cause I want my bloody video games! Digital distribution is starting to look good at this point.

Nice blog keep up the good work , I look forward to read your other rants

Heh, whenever I buy a Rated-M game from Gamestop the person working the counter always asks my mom "Are you ok with this M rating?". I'd say that makes this new ban obsolete, but... most employees of game selling stores don't care... oh well my parent's actually do read the rating and why its rated that. IDK the rating system is sort of out of date but we don't need washington putting the boot down on gaming.

Thanks, I'm always trying to get more publicity and be a good writer. Don't hold your breath, I'm not gonna be too frequent, I have other things to do at times. And in a few weeks, school starts again, so I'm gonna have less time for ranting. But I'll try to keep it up.

I might add, that the kids are just saying the game made them do it to get out of trouble.
I was just about to post this. Most would think they were just looking to get out of punishment.

Two Tennesee kids shot rifles at cars and killed a man, citing GTA as their reason.

How, precisely, did these kids acquire GTA? Either someone a retalier screwed up or their parents did.

Fun story: GAME refused to sell me Mirror's Edge (16+ game) because I didn't have ID on me, despite the fact I was 18 at the time. Mildly annoying, but goes to show that retailers aren't all soulless vendors who sell to anyone.

Edit: Soleless? Vendors without the bottom of their shoes? Methinks Amnestic has been awake too long.

It depend on where you go. Larger retailers like Game Stop will card you but local places rarely bother.

Hasn't this horse (GTA in particular) been beaten to death repeatedly?

GTA IV was expected to sell 6 million copies worldwide in its first week. If it did cause people to go around killing others then there would be a lot more deaths reported. I think that there are certain things such as what you allow children to view and such that have to be left up to the parents otherwise we have the problem of Big Brother with the government inside your own home.
