I didn't think some of the popular people had THAT high of a post count compared to some others.

It's mostly about how they are seen around the forums. The Sims 3 forums doesn't have post counts and the exact same thing happens. Mostly because of how active some people are.

Blaming the post count is a bit pointless in this case.

This is how I use the post count.

'Hey I don't recognise that username/avatar!'
Glance at post count.

If it's low, that's why I don't recognise them. They haven't posted a lot, and thus I haven't seen them. If it's high, and with a recent join date, it's probably a username I don't have in memory who's changed avatar. If it's high with a long-ago join date, it's one of the older members of the community who doesn't post all that much.

---

Anyway, I don't think the post counts make people feel excluded - those with higher post-counts don't exclusively talk to other people of similar counts (though there are obvious friendships you can see around the place).
If you want to quote someone it isn't all that tricky and shouldn't be intimidating - most people on here are friendly enough (or interested in debating enough) that they'll reply back.
Equally however, if you don't like the conversations a couple of posters have in the forums, use that ignore tool (the one on the site, or the one in your head)!

No, we have to keep the post count. If they were removed, I wouldn't know who to ignore!

I don't agree. When I see someone who has an enormous post count then at best they stick in my mind because they're often popping up in threads. When I see someone who has significantly more posts than myself who has been around the same amount of time, if I assume anything is that they don't often contribute meaningfully to a discussion. If I see someone with a huge post count (above say 20 per day they've been members) I assume both that they do not often contribute meaningfully, and that they have some sort of severe life problem that causes them to dedicate much of their time to this board.

High post counts are not likely to engender any sort of respect in my cases - it is quite the opposite. Also, it is perfectly possible to have a very high post count and be relatively unknown. My post count for example is higher than most but because it was built over a long period, I remain relatively unknown through most of the board.

I don't really care about post counts, but I have to admit that those with higher post counts feel a bit more like members of the community. But that's probably because they are more like members of the community. Because they're more active.

Still, I guess I'd get a pretty good deal out of it if they remove it but keep the "joined" date. Been a member since 2009, yet I don't even have 20 posts.

I've seen it and been a part of it... kind of. It wasn't because of having a high post count though, it was because of the attitude of the new user.

If someone signs up to this site and decides that the first thing they're going to do is make a thread on either a controversial topic (taking a side and degrading the opposing view) or just making a thread singling out a group of people and talking down to/about them. While these people have a right to their opinion, it feels like they have no interest in being part of the community and are just trying to make people angry.

The post count/start date itself doesn't really have much to do with the opinion of the user, it just helps identify if the person has just joined to mess with people.

...... Hmmm, on second thought this doesn't sound much like elitism but it's the only time I've seen a post count color people's opinion of someone.

if reputation is linked to post count then i believe the kudos system from the nexus forums might be a lot more efficient.

basically you give kudos as a sort of thumbs up to members that have either helped you or you like.

post count seems rather irrelevant to me, for the most part i am amazed at how much time someone has spent posting when digits seem to go on forever

post count is helpful for knowing if people are advertising for the sake of advertising or if they're doing it by mistake.

If a person had a 3 post count and they're advertising something then you know that it's completely intentional.

I'm living proof that post count does not matter. I've been here two years, and just broke 500. I do, however, NOTICE posts by people like Fappy (whose name makes me smile) more. I do not know why though. Maybe they just post more?
Right.

Everybody catch that? newfoundsky's living proof that size doesn't matter.

...right...well...I suppose that's...[small]something[/small] to be, um, proud of...right...proud of...

Eh even they did away with post count I'd have no strong feelings one way or the other. Shows how active you are sure but they're just numbers in the end so who cares? Most of it comes from group chats and game forum anyways so it's not like it matters.

I was quite happy when I broke 1k (almost 2k) now just so say I did. Reminds me that this is my favorite forum.

I don't see the elitism thing though... forum celebrities get their fame for just being cool people and being well known not because they have 20k posts.

edit: I will say though that some new members seem to come to this site with the intention of posting as MUCH as possible to up the count and get known. A certain user who is now banned comes to mind. Came in only a few months ago and already had a 2k+ post count for... being controversial and posting a billion times in one topic? *shrug*

Put simply, it's a load of bollocks. So what if Daystar or Fappy post a lot? If you think it's a really an issue with a select few posting most of the things how about YOU post MORE instead of whining? Exercise a stiff upper lip you smelly, possibly French, peasants. I haven't created a single topic during my time here, it's not because I'm scared our Grand Lord Daystar will feed me to his younglings if he disapproves. It's because I haven't thought of anything I personally deem thread worthy. I don't post much because 8 times out of 10 I just brain vomit all over the comment box or have no strong opinion on the topic at hand.

At the end of the day it's just a sodding number.

Life must be really shitty when you can get genuinely upset about something as insignificant as a post counter, and this is on a site where people lose their shit when Dante's hair colour changes.
Mind if I contradict that?

Life must be pretty good if something as small and petty as post count can be construed as upsetting. The people whinging about this apparently have little in the way of difficulties in their lives, so they must invent some.

Those who've had a hard life are most likely to smile at rainbows. Those who've had an easy life are more likely to sneer at them.
...Well played. Well played, indeed.

It must still be a miserable existence, though, if you have such a gilded life and can still devote time to getting upset over trivial things rather than buying ponies or whatever it is the wealthy do with their disposable income.

I think it is fine, alot of people have really high post counts because they post on EVEYTHING, I have been on this site for over 3 years but only have an average post count because I only post on things I think I can say something that has not already been said.

Personally I think it's what people say that make them memorable. That someone has a high post count, is just a fact, but I don't think it causes Elitism. Just because someone has said a lot, doesn't mean there point is less valid than someone who has said little. Most of the time it's even the opposite.

Pretty much this, snark included.

I like looking at post counts, mine and others'. I know it doesn't mean anything, really, but it entertains me. I anticipate the day when my own count finally clears 1000 and I can wear the Morpheus badge.

.....God, I am *such* a nerd.
I WANT MY NEO BADGE. I AM THE ONE I TELL YOU.

Post counts are just a nice little reminder of how much of my time I waste here with you lovely people.
