I personally think that people with more posts should have some of them taken away and redistributed to us with less posts. If you have all those posts you were able to make, certainly you can give some to those of us only able to make a small amount of posts, right? How is it fair that the top 1% of the forum members control 40% of the post count? Quickly, Occupy the video comments section so everyone can see what's happening!
What you did there. I see it.

Gave me a good chuckle.

But, but, but, they worked hard to get all of those posts! Why should they suffer just so the less fortunate can prosper off of the hard work they had to do to reach that post count in the first place? Everyone else should just stop being so lazy about their posting habits!

I don't think it does. Matter of fact, aside from the usual platform wars stuff you find on gaming sites, I haven't seen much elitism at all here.

However, there is kind of an "it crowd" a group of highly recognised posters who draw particular attention, but this isn't really elitist, it's just that there's a hell of a lot of posters here, so it's hard to make a name for yourself. Not impossible, but definately hard.

What, you think I can't read that huh, buddy? You wanna make something of this, huh? I can resort to internet fisticuffs real quick.

Joking aside, I agree with the rest of your post and the OP. The post count shows the quantity of your contributions, not necessarily the quality, or the "approval" or "friendships gained" or "internet respect" or whatever the hell you want to call it. To me, it doesn't mean that much. What matters is what you say, not how much you say. But it's still nice to have as far as the "EXP" aspect goes.

And the date joined thing isn't a big deal either. It's kind of like a fake birthday, right? It doesn't mean that much, but it let's the older folks yell at the youngons to get off the lawn.
[sub][sub]And anyway, that'd mean I'd be yelling at you to get off MY lawn, BUT THAT'S BESIDE THE POINT.[/sub][/sub]

Some people respect others for being on the first couple people to respond to an important thread. Others do so on who gets the most quoted responses. I'm personally about people who make poignant responses.

But yeah, fuck cliques, let's make good internet conversation.

TBH, with forum games and user groups counting the post count really has no need there anymore. I find that most of the people with "massive" post counts either: hang out a lot in forum games and/or in user groups or people who have no clue what PM's and user groups are for and have personal conversations in threads. Getting rid of it wouldn't get rid of elitism, it wouldn't really do much. But right now it's not really making anything better, and in my eyes it's pretty pointless having it there. So either make it so that forum games and user groups don't count towards your post count, or take it away from the side bar altogether.

But really, in the end there won't be popular people that have low post counts, but there can still be unpopular people with high post counts. Hell, I'm at a decent 5,500 and I'm one of the Escapist's biggest examples of a fuck-up, and I'm pretty much obscure. If one were to ask someone "name 20 Escapist members" I would most likely not be in it, probably not for 50 either. Enough about me though, my point is that popular people have high post counts, but hated and/or obscure people can have them too.

I like to think of you as the young one. Which isn't an insult. For you're age, you're a hell of a lot more pleasant to read and talk to than some adults I know.

Mate, if you heard my voice you would think I'm at least 17, puberty hit me early and it hit me hard, which I think is one of the reasons I'm quite mature for my age. Thanks for the compliment too; I weep when I hear some of my schoolmates, some of them are the definition of everything wrong with Xbox Live.

Anyone with a lower post-count than me is just a newbie. Nobody should listen to them, freakin' new guys.

Also, anyone with a higher post-count than me is a no-life snob. Nobody should listen to them, freakin' know-it-alls. That includes all the forum mods, and Daystar Clarion. ESPECIALLY Daystar Clarion.

End of line.
Even the new guys who just generally prefer to lurk?

OT: Post count doesn't matter, it's all about the quality of the post. Plus, the idea that people who have high post counts make cliques with each other; it's not like they have a super secret organisation or anything.

I like post counts, not because it makes me feel superior or better- but rather how long i've been active on The Escapist. I think of it like the Xbox 360 gamer points I get for achieving things. Just a nice record and also how much i've been talking/posting.

Besides, elitism doesn't reflect entirely on the post count. They can feel better with just their Avatar alone too, thinking "mine is so much bigger and cooler then yours" or "my badges are amazing, you have nothing!" But let's not forget an important concept: It's the person who feels elite, the post count doesn't cause anybody or everybody to start putting others below them.

I look at users like a person, not feel less of a person myself if say someone has more post counts then me. Besides, it's only numbers so I wouldn't want to base my reputation off that :p lol.
Shut up Frappe, you're kidding yourself.

It's all about the numbers.

The bulbous throbbing numbers.

Put simply, it's a load of bollocks. So what if Daystar or Fappy post a lot? If you think it's a really an issue with a select few posting most of the things how about YOU post MORE instead of whining? Exercise a stiff upper lip you smelly, possibly French, peasants. I haven't created a single topic during my time here, it's not because I'm scared our Grand Lord Daystar will feed me to his younglings if he disapproves. It's because I haven't thought of anything I personally deem thread worthy. I don't post much because 8 times out of 10 I just brain vomit all over the comment box or have no strong opinion on the topic at hand.

At the end of the day it's just a sodding number.
Mr Grand Lord Daystar, if you please.

Can't let the riffraff get too familiar now, can we?
What, you are neither a sir nor a doctor nor a professor?
Why should I even listen to someone of such a low standing.
Tsa, Grand Lord my a$$, come talk to me when you are Supreme Emperor.
Professor Supreme God-Emperor of th Universe.
Like me.
Until then, I shall treat you as the low-life you truly are.
Boy.
Sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of a Japanese Shinto Goddesses in the form of a rainbow wolf being more awesome than a manatee.
Well, I would ask you to stop lying to yourself, but clearly your delusions of grandeur have finally managed to damage your brain.

How could a character from a bombed legend of zelda rip-off, loosely based on an ancient japanese deity born from a higher deity's dirty eye, even hold a candle to a Glowing Rainbow Manatee. With a pun attached?
You're not even using the best manatee related meme.

You should feel all the shame a sea cow can feel.
Because making fun of one of the most famous aerial disasters of all time is much better than simply making an innocent joke using the depicted sea-life for a pun whilst also featuring pretty colours?
If I have to tell you why you're wrong, then you have truly learned nothing from me.

You were my most promising student too...
Apparently you are unclear on who is the student and who is the master young one.
But clearly your understanding of memes is lacking at best, especially when it comes to manatees.
There isn't even a rainbow in there.
There is. You just can't see it because the photo is black and white....

And I like seeing other people's post counts.

It's an indication of how active someone has been on this website. Nothing more, nothing less.

If people want to read more into it, or give it more value than it actually has, then that's their problem.
I personally never dismiss or belittle those with post counts smaller than mine. That would just be stupid.

We should listen to TF, that post count tells me that you know what you are talking about .

I dont think the post count necessarily means much on its own.

Personally, I'm a chronic lurker. I've still been here ages, I just don't talk very much.

I don't think I've ever seen an example of elitism against one's post count on this forum ever. If anything, I've found more of a welcoming attitude towards posters with under 100 posts. Someone who's new to the forum obvious won't understand the in-jokes, the personalities and whatnot right off the bat. It's all part of the learning curve.

I'm what, nearing 9000 posts? I certainly don't see myself as an elitist because of it. In fact, I don't tend to draw much attention to myself. I just comment on threads that interest me, or if I have something stupid to say.

I've said this, like, 20 times already, but I did once have someone tell me I was wrong about something simply because they had a higher post-count than me...

Remember kids, in the immortal words of Mr. T, a wise man talks because he's got something to say, a fool talks because he's got to say something.

Yeah, when she wasn't getting into MASSIVE arguments, she was derailing threads left right and center, even worse than Daystar,

For instance, in this thread . . .

Boudica didn't make a single on-topic post in that entire thread. It was all just derailment nonsense.
Yar she the one. I don't enjoy name dropping but I strongly hint to the point that someone will get who I'm referring to haha.

I will say though that some new members seem to come to this site with the intention of posting as MUCH as possible to up the count and get known. A certain user who is now banned comes to mind. Came in only a few months ago and already had a 2k+ post count for... being controversial and posting a billion times in one topic? *shrug*

Oh god that's some of the worst thread-derailing I've ever seen. Also, I love that I'm known as the one who hates Daystar. I really don't, what I do HATE is seeing off-topic conversations between some of the more popular people. It's just bloody annoying to me, and if I had my way it would get mod wrath, so they learn to use PM's and user groups instead of clogging up the forums with off-topic conversations.

So an artist decided to get a wonderful rainbow in a picture with a huge manatee and then decided the best option would be to use black and white?
For a rainbow manatee?
Do I even need to spell out why that immediately renders this image incredibly stupid?

I've seen a bit of post-count elitism...when I lurked/freshly joined a good few years ago now. Aside from the (incredibly rare) odd post seen here and there, it is simply not something that I have seen happen on here since. Mind you, I do tend to spend my time lurking in R&P, so maybe it occurs in other sub-sections, but not that I've noticed.

Thus I don't think post-counts should be gotten rid of. They are a nice reminder to have about, I enjoy being faintly surprised every time I see mine (for some reason I always think it is a good two-thirds lower than it is) given the amount of time I spend (and have spent) here.
