The Prince Returns in Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands

It looks like Ubisoft is bringing the good ol' Prince back for another go.

Ubisoft announced today that it is developing Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands for release next year. The title will come to both consoles and handhelds in May 2010.

Unfortunately, details are incredibly sparse at the moment. The Forgotten Sands will return to the Sands of Time storyline that was diverged from in the most recent game in the series, titled Prince of Persia, which was first released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in December 2008. The Sands of Time storyline was told through the previous three games: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, and Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones.

The only other details come from Ubisoft's press release, which states: "Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands will feature many of the fan-favorite elements from the original series as well as new gameplay innovations that gamers have come to expect from the Prince of Persia brand." From this we can only conclude that there will be spikes, lots of spikes, and probably some kind of time manipulation.

The game's official website [http://prince-of-persia.us.ubi.com/] teases a larger reveal at the upcoming Spike TV Video Game Awards, airing on the night of December 12. As much as I hate to plug the event, rest easy in the knowledge that the trailer will probably be up on the internet shortly afterward.

THOSE BASTARDS! Dammit. Sure, I LOVED that series, but they'll be kicking a dead horse at this point. The first game was deliciously brilliant, the second game was everything I wanted gameplay wise, but fucked up the story, and the third game wrapped everything up into a nice, neat little package. Another game will kill the story (again.)

Blah. I'm obligated as a fan of the trilogy (as it was my first major game series that I played and finished) to buy and play it, but I can't be happy with it on a standard of principle.

Edit: Forgot this. /rant

So, that's the limit of your imagination, Ubisoft? Disappointed, very disappointed. Oh well, let's wait till 12 December to find out how disappointing the whole thing will be in its fullest. I mean, it can't be more disappointing than a remake? Right?

And I see no mention of a PC release anywhere. Conspiracy I say!

Sounds very interesting, seeing as I could actually identify with the Prince on quite a few levels. Well, this should be a good fix for fans (like moi).

I dunno, they kind of wrapped up the story pretty nicely in the third one... but then that's what it seemed in the first one. Maybe it'll work. Whatever happens I'm sure it'll still be fun.

one game (two if you count the ds version) and they already cut off the new prince. I also feel this will have something to do with the upcomming movie

And then from Bungie: another Halo! Wait, there is more! Square will be releasing a new Final Fantasy! Woot! What's that? More Metal Gear? Sold! [/snarkiness]
I'm waiting for the news where this turns out that you are playing a completely different character, who bumbles through everything, saved by sheer luck (and not time warping skills) while searching for the original Prince, who in the end has turned out to have a complete new facelift and joined the bad guys, saying, 'F*** this sh**, yo!'

You know, the PC is a platform as well.

Anyway, I'm dubious. SoT: one of my most favourite games. PoP 08: Meh. Continuing a story that didn't even need to be continued after the first game in the trilogy: Double meh.

This.

I don't know about a lot of other people, but I thought the Sands Trilogy was wrapped up nicely and looking forward to how they were going to continue with the new Prince. The ending of the first game (won't spoil) lent itself to a follow up. I'm feel let down that they are ignoring it.

As long as the combat isn't the same as the newest PoP game, i'll play it.
Also cool how there going back the the Sands of Time story line.

Seriously, after an ending like that, they should have made the next game in the series just to finish up the story. If they had to change the art style, gameplay, etc., nobody would have cared. It's not like they would have not bought it because something like the cell shading got removed (I'm personally a fan of cell shading).

Sounds like they're hoping to bounce off the success of the film. Let's hope Jake Gylleblargletharp isn't voicing the Prince.

Also, kind of pissed off that they won't resolve to Ormazd cliffhanger.

Sigh... I really loved the original prince of persia trilogy, but I really thought that new one was just SO awful.

I'm very excited - I have high hopes - but also high expectations - it is really a slippery step to continue a closed story - open it up again somehow to torment the poor Prince once again :)

While PoP 08 ( it seems everybody calls it that :) ) wasn't bad - I liked it - it wasn't bad but it was different to the veteran fans of the series - and while I would like it if they one day continued the storyline of it - I am now very happy that we will get another (hopefully) time rewinding, free-form fighting, spike and blade filled traps avoiding great game - if the developers are the same - we may have a great game coming our way ...

But I am a bit afraid of the May 2010 release date - they usually release it at the end of the year ( november or december just like the Assassins Creed games) Its probably because of the movie - but I hope its a seperate story - and not a movie tie in cash cow.

Come on Ubisoft! Don't disappoint us!

That's a shame - the new game was actually very good...and with this announcement they have the potential to ruin the Sands of Time trilogy...
