YES! Critical Miss is back to form, and right on time for the GTA V reviewing clusterfudge. I haven't read the comments about Greg Tito's review, and now I'm afraid to look.

One nitpick, though: I thought, as a sociopath, Erin doesn't give a rat's ass what people think of her or what she says.

Worst thing is, six months from now, those same whiny cunts will say that GTA V was complete shit, just like they did with IV.

I wonder if Tito is ever going to live this down. Knowing the internet, probably not.
The internet STILL hasn't let him live down the Dragon Age 2 review (as if there was something wrong with it). So you're right, they'll never shut up about it, unfortunately.

Oh, this one might me a lot closer to reality than people think. After all, what is more professional than to delegate lose-lose situation to someone you'll miss least if they have suffer a face-foreclosure?

No but really, getting angry over reviews is silly, except when the reviews are actually false, say, outright lying...

I want a website that, say, gives an average vote to a long-waited game only because it really is average. or a high score to a barely known game, because it happens to be quite good.
That website would lose many viewers..... at first. But if it keeps going at it, over time it would become known as the only website whose game reviews you could trust.
No it wouldn't. At some point, some critic would come out with an opinion that doesn't toe the party line and readers who disagree would start screaming about "teh bias" and/or "teh corruption." The problem isn't which outlet people are reading, it's that they follow outlets rather than individual writers. They look for consistency of opinion in a group of people rather than in one person.

Odd, because I couldn't countenance giving a game with a control scheme that archaic anything more than an eight.
I remember thinking similar thoughts when I recently picked up GTA IV, then found its controls so utterly unplayable that I got about 30 minutes into the game before abandoning it in frustration as among the worst $5 I've ever spent on Steam. It's not even the button mapping. You can fix the button mapping. But every command is just so sluggish it makes me want to scream.

Funny comic as always. Plus, people won't be able to complain about it being "Not about video games!", this time. ;D

You're too late, Carter: Jim Sterling already covered this. "Whine out of Ten" has a nice ring to it, doesn't it? Silly, silly fanboys...

OT: It's stuff like this that makes my question my desire to enter the games industry. Do I really making products catered to people who are only too happy to fill the stereotype of whiny, entitled brats?
True. You will always get people who complain about your games/comments on games/reviews of games.

:D But some people will love you for it, and even send you things. Like other games, action figures, cupcakes, and dildos.

<_< Granted, I can't guarantee that ALL of the dildos sent will be as a "Thank you", or as a "Go F@#K yourself".[sub][sub]If you have no idea what I'm talking about, go watch the Jimquisition.[/sub][/sub]

I WISH I had no idea what you're talking about...

I'd agree with the sentiment, if it wasn't for the fact that it's ignoring every legitimate complain about the review(s), and exaggerating a vocal minority.
Because, you know, the review here was FAR FAR from perfect. And this is coming from someone that doesn't have any interest in playing the game (I've watched my roommate playing it though, and gave it a try for a few minutes). Just in case I get labeled a "mindless fanboy".

FWIW, it's not just games where this bullshit happens. I read camera reviews now and then, and people get just as stupidly worked up about scores...

"WTF! Nikon D7100 is only an 80 out of 100? How much are Canon paying you to shit all over a good product?"

Or nitpick the review's identified flaws in the product...

"You say the JPEG quality isn't very good, but no one buys this camera unless they shoot in RAW. Should not have taken so many points off it."

Basically what happens is people make up an idea in their mind of what score a their favourite toy deserves, then put on their fanboy armour and head out to do battle with anyone who rates it outside that range.

I instantly thought of this:

I don't know exactly what people use as their criteria for judging a game's score, I imagine there's some subjectivity to it, there must be because a game is not simply a mechanical thing, and a game this complex can be a lot of things to a lot of people. I totally respect Greg Tito's right to score this game a 1 if that's what he's so inclined to do, and more importantly I think anyone with an issue with his score needs to consider the context of his review, and balance that against their own feelings.

Not everyone loves the same genre, and even those that do probably do not for the same reasons or in the same way. I got that maybe this wasn't exactly his cup of tea, he knows, I don't. My point is simply that people should consider the review more than the score.

I don't understand where the 9/10 is coming from. Doesn't the Escapist use 5 stars to rate games?

I suppose these kinds of things are meant to be shorthand at-a-glance accounts of the games "worth"but I feel they are somewhat antiquated. Can't really convey much with just a fraction.
That is the system they use and I wish they wouldn't. In fact, I wish everyone would drop numerical ratings for pretty much all criticism. I don't see how that system is particularly useful when what an individual values in a game may or may not have anything at all to do with why the game received the score it did. You can two games get a 3.5/5 and both have vastly different aspects of the game that informed that score. I think I recall Jim Sterling saying that he liked using numerical ratings for criticism, I just don't think it tells the audience much, if anything, about whetehr they will actually enjoy the game.
You know the weird thing? If I'm remembering correctly, this site didn't use a numerical score when I first joined. I'm almost positive that's the case, because I remember it being a big part of why I was impressed enough to join.

The content on this site has really gone to the dogs in the last few years. I'm mainly sticking around for the forums and a couple of the columns at this point.

HAHAHA, that is horrible. I feel bad for laughing at that comic. I forgot about it, I may have to reread the archives again.

OT: I watch Yahtzee reviews. I can only think of 2 games he has ever praised, maybe 3. But he is honest and will not coat the flaws.

Why do we even care about the X/10 rating system anyways? Seriously, it's good for getting a feel of the general opinion of a game, but that's about it.

Because people don't like complicated things. A full review means people have to read, interpret, and draw their own opinions. Even then, they might have to compare rival opinions. Numbers are easier because they obviously fairly assess all points and sum them up in a digit or two. Then we can objectively know which magazine is more accurate by which ones have numbers in keeping with my own personal opinion, which makes them right.

And if they don't agree, they are TEH BIAS and everyone should ignore them.

I wonder if this persecution fetish always existed in similar numbers and only shows up now because of the prevalence of modern technology, or if it's new.
