This is my one for now: Siege of Madrigal by Bungie [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=biw2yiglKcc]

A download link of the full song can be found on this page: http://forums.bungie.org/halo/archive24.pl?read=708899

EDIT: Also Mad World by Gary Jules is very sad.
Those two fit me perfectly. First one brings a small tear to my eye when I here the whole thing.

second
third. I've heard a lot of songs/music/tune that filled my soul with such emotions, but none were able to do it as perfectly as "Mad World". Almost felt like watching my hamsters jumping off my balcony in an Indian queue.
4th.That song is so beautiful and sad. Great though.
nth. Can't be bothered reading the thread to find the value of n.
n+1th.

Also, I Will by Radiohead. It's almost like a hymn.

I'll second Tears in Heaven. Cats in the Cradle on the other hand just gives me a bittersweet feeling, kind of like a lifesized owning.

I'd like to add The Future Just Ain't what it Used to Be by Pandora's Box

From a game, Regarding Sawyer from World in Conflict is pretty sad sounding.

Coldplay - Clocks - the music and words just make me think about things that have happened in my life and it messes me up everytime I think about it.

'Don't Cry' by Guns 'N' Roses surprisingly... After that it would be their song 'Civil War'
These songs are not for people trying to cheer up.

I Will Wait for You
Connie Francis

Many of you may remember it from the Jurassic Barks episode of Futurama.

Annoying thing is that it applies to my current situation...

EDIT: BTW, Mad World is crap. Not very sad, by my standards. Gloomy and depressing, yes, but not sad.
Gollum's Song is sad, though. Kudos to whoever suggested that.
Also:

Edge of the Ocean

Although that second one probably depends on your mindset. To me, it sounds very nostalgic and...well, just plain goddamn sad!

I know that I probably should say "Blackbird" by the Beatles or "Hurt" by the one and only... Johnny Cash! But I'm gonna go with "No Shelter" by Rage Against the Machine... It's sad because it's true.

A song you've probably never heard of, Two Headed Boy Part Two by Neutral Milk Hotel.
Gets me every time. God, that whole album is simultaneously the saddest thing I've ever heard, and yet also beautifully hopeful. If only Jeff Magnum would get back into the studio...

I'm going to nominate Casimir Pulaski Day and Middle Cyclone myself. The former is the narrative of a person who is watching a friend slowly die from (what I think is) leukemia. And Middle Cyclone is a song from Neko Case's newest album. It's a bit of an unlikely choice at first, but after she's spent her whole career writing what are essentially stories she is narrating, it's amazing to hear a song about her, a bit of a confessional. It's so stripped down and honest, and every word is utterly sincere. It all works to an affecting, gorgeous song.

EDIT: "Stories she is narrating"? What? I meant stories about others, narrated by her, but removed in tone from her life and views.

sorry to get scientific but statistically the saddest song is called "Gloomy Sunday" because it has led to hundreds of people committing suicide

"Sad" is pretty subjective. I don't think sappy songs are really sad at all. They just feel generic.

Also, to everyone saying "Hurt" by Johnny Cash, that's a cover. His version is good, but Reznor's is best.

9 Crimes By Damien Rice
I love this song it is so passionate and emotional in it's lyrics

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOn5Eudj5tI
There's a little bit of Damien talking in the beginning so just wait for it to begin.
