I really find "Isolation Years" by opeth off "ghost Reveries" to be very haunting and sad... the lyrics are really good.

I know she was aching
There's a certain detail seen here
The pen must have slipped to the side

sorry after taking a closer look i found out that it is just an urban legend but if you listen to it, it's still really saddening.
Most of these 'sad' songs don't really do anything for me. For sheer despair, tragedy and pain, you can't beat Xasthur
