The Simpsons Will Be Back for Yet Another Season

The animated mainstay will officially reach and surpass 500 episodes.

This morning, Fox officially picked up The Simpsons for renewal, thereby ensuring the show's run through 2012. During season 23, the show will mark its 500th episode; this puts the series just behind Gunsmoke [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q9qlZ58m86g] (635 episodes) for the most episodes ever produced for primetime television.

The decision was not solely in the hands of the Fox Broadcasting Corporation; Gracie Films (James L. Brooks' production company) also had to agree to the renewal. According to The Hollywood Reporter, executive producer Al Jean was pleased with the prospect of a twenty-third season, saying "like many 22-year-olds, The Simpsons is extremely happy remaining at home, on Fox, and hopes it doesn't have to go out into the real world for many years to come."

Many (myself included) think that the series has stretched far past its prime, but today's announcement suggests that the denizens of 742 Evergreen Terrace are still reaching a sizable audience. After all, as Troy McClure reminded us in "The Simpsons 138th Episode Spectacular [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPzQwKVHyb4]," "The Simpsons have come a long way since an old drunk made humans out of his rabbit characters to pay off his gambling debts. Who knows what adventures they'll have between now and the time the show becomes unprofitable?"

I continue to be glad I don't have cable. There's something disheartening about watching new episodes of a show that I started watching while both it and I were in the single digits. I mean, I've heard of stagnation, but Jesus, give me a break.

Happy to hear it's continuing. While I can agree that the show is past it's prime, that doesn't mean the show is bad now.

Ugh, why can't you just let them die already Matt? I know they're still making money, but they've been spiritually dead for about 10 years already and they're starting to smell.

Ugg....

Let them DIE ALREADY. They are not funny anymore.

Pay more attention to Futurama instead. MUCH better show.

Stop trying to be 'Family Guy' with random, nonsensical jokes. The Simpsons movie was pure gold and had very little of that.

A bad Simpson's episode is still better than most of the things on TV... I'm not sure if Simspons is ever going to die but I'm not sure that is a bad thing.

There is a lot of worse stuff, though The Simpsons has been getting continually worse and worse and worse, as, I think, a lot of good T.V. is getting better (NBC is realizing that Hiro Nakamura saying 'Yata!' and Sylar dramatically cocking his head is not an episode of tv, and Fox continues to astound me with how good their shows are despite their narrow-minded news station). However, that doesn't mean The Simpsons can't eventually get better from here...I mean...how much worse could it get?

Really ain't nothing wrong with them continuing. The show is a staple of primetime and animated series, and as long as the cast enjoys it, they should keep on chuggin'.

You just said it, it makes money. I wouldnt be surpised if Fox kept it going long after Matt Groening dies/leaves the show.

Im not really surprised. I think theres a video interview with Matt Greoning on sky.com somewhere, when asked about the future of the Simpsons he said something along the lines of 'As long as the world is in chaos, we will have something to wirte into our shows'

While its true the quality has fallen over the years i find it still has its moments.

I just finished a rant on another forum on why The Simpsons must end. You can find it here [http://www.toonzone.net/forums/showpost.php?p=3731201&postcount=44].

This show is nothing more than a corpse possessed by a Network that only aims to milk out enough profit from its shows till they're bone dry. Look at the new episodes, they're humorless, the animation lacks the cartoonish simplicity that made the show look so attractive, and its content is only compiled of cultural references, recycled slapstick humor and a unnecessary amount of guest stars. Sure, I still like the Simpsons, but only the classical episodes are any good. The new post-Season 19 episodes have not a single hint of charm and soul from its classic episodes.

In other words: End the goddamn show.

As always, the Simpsons continue their ways of milking money. We all know that their quality has declined over the years and yet, some of us watch it.

Also, bring back Bart Simpson making prank calls with pseudo names like Hugh Jazz.
