Nothing is ever truly free.

For EA, not only is this good publicity for the Sims 4, but having people install Origin is profitable, as that exposes more users to their online store, and gives them more of a market share.

Which, incidentally, it's why Steam keeps making all those sales.

I'm tempted to bite and get the Sims 2, but the thing keeping me back is the suspicion that the game will require launch of Origin whenever I want to play it, or some convoluted offline mode like Steam has.

Again, their objective is to make me used to using their frontend, so I don't have much hope I can set it up so I can play offline without Origin popping up (That's also my main gripe with all Steam games).
Origin isn't launching for me when I load it up. Played a few hours already with many restarts to add mods. Works just fine, no origin popups.

Really tempted actually... I'm not going to regret putting Origin in my laptop am I?
No you don't have to install Origin to do so.

If you already have xbox live or psn account you already have origin account.

Just go to origin.com

log in

go to 'my account', 'order history' near the top of the page

In that page you should see 'redeem code'

EDIT: But yeah, you'll need to install origin to play it. :p

It's not as bad as when it started. They drop most of the problems(always on-line,resource hog)

Funny enough they have a better refund/return policy then steam, (as in they have one)

One of the few grudges I hold is the one I hold against The Sims 2. For wasting my time. So I redeemed the code out of spite. Hah hah haa! Burn and suffer!

All this ORIGIN and EA hate aside...has anyone actually been able to PLAY the game?

Supposedly, The Sims 2 doesn't seem to work at all with any windows after XP (Vista, 7 and 8). Every time I try to play the game, it crashes after the EA logo and apparently i'm not the only one. Seems like everyone is having some kind of problem with this free game download, whether it be a Key issue or a Crashing issue.

Doesn't matter what price the game is at for whatever amount of time...if the game doesn't even work then what is the point?

I can only hope this issue will be fixed soon or else the hate is only going to grow and grow...

I just downloaded and installed this for my sister on a Windows 7 machine and didn't have any problems and was able to create a new game, but I didn't use Origin to launch the game either.

This nicely parallels what EA did with first three C&C games. They released Tiberian Dawn as freeware on the franchise's 15th birthday, Red Alert in the runup to the release of Red Alert 3, and did similar with Tiberian Sun+Firestorm in the leadup to C&C4. Even if it's limited-time only, still pretty cool of them to do this.

I guess we know what happened to Aaron "Apoc" Kaufmann.

Well, I gave in and got it. Funny thing, I already had an EA account (possibly from a previous game I registered) that needed upgrading to Origin.

I've had no trouble downloading or running the game, and no issues with the addons. It does take its sweet time to load (Win 7 x64).

And, to my surprise, the game seems to launch from the executable, without requiring launching the Origin client (my guess is that being a pre-origin game, adding that functionality was too much of a hassle).

Truth be told, if Origin did that, make games independent of their client until online features are needed, they'd win some massive points over steam.

We'll see when my only reason in the foreseeable future to get an Origin game (Mirror's Edge 2) hits.

I say it's worth installing origin for.Sims 2 with the expansions and mods was the best in the series.
On short bursts it is a blast to play.

*sigh*

Actually almost got me to get Origin there for a moment EA. Still not going to though, even though I remember that Sims 2 was a delight to play with my friend at his house. We enjoyed torturing the poor sods...

That's really good timing - I'd just installed my old Sims 2 games onto my laptop to give them a whirl because I was starting to pine after it. Now I can play all the expansions without giving EA any of my money!

EDIT: ....and now the download keeps failing. I'll keep trying though - it might just be terrible New Zealand practically-third-world-country internet.

It's pretty much confirmed this pack will have more content than The Sims 4.
EA are really good at bad marketing.

Wow, EA doing something not evil for once? Why do I get the feeling that this is a ploy to garner goodwill before they spring some new horror on us? Oh, wait. Pattern recognition.

The Sims 2 is so much better than The Sims 3.

While TS3 has some nice features like horses, holidays and scuba-diving, its gameplay is kind of boring and the engine is a complete mess with a failed attemp at creating an open neighbourhood, which resulted in incredibly long loading times, crashes to desktop and pop-in, among many other problems. It's also important that this version of TS2 takes only 12 Gb of HD space, while TS3 take more than 50 Gb with all the expansions packs.

I think this is a win-win situation for EA and for all people that enjoy games.

It downloaded fine for me, and played as well on Windows 7. The only issue I have is the load times, but with as much "stuff" as Sims 2 has, it's understandable.

EA, you did good for once. Now, follow it up with more good stuff. You can't rely on doing the occasional good thing and expect to get praise.
