Hmm, I don't blow up on people often, but when I do it is often memorable, most recently, I was asked to do something I disagreed with by a manager for a company I no longer work for. I'm pretty flexible person, so I figured I must be misunderstanding the purpose of the assigned task, so I pressed my manager for a reason, she dodged the question for a while then snapped at me saying, "You'll do it because I said so."

Well, I'd had enough of her shit, so I went into a rant I can still remember to this day:

"Not f---ing good enough lady, only two people on this planet get to use "because I said so" on me, and you are neither old nor mean enough to be -either- of my parents. so if you can't answer a simple f---ing question then you can find yourself a new f---ing cook."

Needless to say, this is one of the major reasons I no longer work at this place. (And for the record, upon hearing the story and what I said, my parents couldn't stop laughing about it for a week.)

"moving forward"/"going forward"- Had it said to me by teachers and bosses alike. Instead of sugar-coating it like that, just tell me to shut the hell up and do things your way. All it really is is a shorter way of saying 'We're going to do things this way despite the fact that you may have logical or reasonable objections or better ideas. But I don't have a reason or can't tell you the reason why I won't listen to those things, so just shut up and do it this way.'

"Suck it up!"/"We all have problems!"/"get over it!"-This has basically been said already but it still irks me to no end. Yes, I KNOW everyone has problems. I'm not asking for you to FIX my problems, I'm just fishing for a little compassion here. I feel like shit. It would be nice to think people who are my friends are willing to sit down and listen when I need it like I try to listen when they need it. Some people can't simply 'get over' some things.

"Well, just ______!"- I hear this mostly in terms of "Well just go back to college!". Gee, is it really that easy? If I just go back will all the money I need for tuition and fees and books just magically poof into my bank account?! Really?!?! It will?!?! Well I'll just go right out and-oh wait...that DOESN'T magically happen. Silly me, forgetting that. It's usually just the manner and tone that it's said that gets me. Like what I want to do is genuinely so easy that all I have to do is go out and DO it with no regards to the finer details like money or finding the time to do such things.

In cases of sexual assualt the legal system fails as there is usually far too little material evidence and a great many ways for the defence to claim "sex yes but rape no". As I said I have no issue in general with the "innocent until proven guilty" philosphy but with sex crimes it is insufficient to provide a satisfactory system to convict the guilty and protect the innocent.

This is why I consider trivialsing rape in the manner that you seem to think appropriate is so damaging. I dont have a problem with people joking about murder because people who commit such crimes are brought to justice in about 90%-95% of cases. In cases of rape justice is the rare rather than the common - and society by and large does not recognise this fact. For exactly what reasons I am not going to specualte upon here.

Suffice to say for myself, having never been a victim of rape but understanding it from the perspective of some who have, I would deem humour around sex crimes to be not just trivialising, but damaging to the chances of victims to recieve any kind of justice. It is also for this reason I would give anyone who is found to be fabricating a charge of rape to get a sentence in line with a rapist.

If justice is not seen to be done then justice ceases to deter those who would succumb to its temptations.

Are you serious? Take a step back and really look at what you are arguing for.

The problem is that rape victims often don't report the crime right away. There is plenty of physical evidence, but most of it has to be collected right away or it's useless. Encouraging victims to speak up as soon as possible, pushing back those who ridicule the victims, making sure the cases are taken seriously. All of these would increase the conviction rate. Wild changes to the law and legal systems will only serve to throw innocent people in jail.

Also, there will never be 100% conviction rate, because sometimes the prosecution is wrong. A rape may not have occurred. Now wait a second, I agree that more guilty get off then innocent, I just do not think the correct way to fight it is overthrowing innocent until proven guilty.


And to the first guy, CONGRATZ you really DO have a phrase guaranteed to start a shit-storm. I'm not sure whether to commend you, or condemn you.

I believe I said (twice) in my post that I dont have a problem with innocent until proven guilty and trial by jury - the point I was trying to make in this in many cases the judicial system fails when it comes to sex crimes. In no way do I suggest that innocent people should be condemned in order to secure a better conviction rate for the guilty. I was trying to say that system is imperfect. This is kind of my point. Rape is a special case in law in the sense that it a very serious crime that, because of a variety of reasons, has a quite a low conviction rate. That is why im saying that society should not joke or make light of the issue as so many who commit the crime get away with it.

Imho its one of the big injustices of society and one that, without doing more harm than good, cannot be satifactorily solved.

I completely agree with you on trying to ensure a better conviction rate by persuading victims to come forward ASAP. Thats what I really meant by so little material evidence. Often if even 24 hours go past before the crime is reported then it is too late to gather the necessary material evidence that can be so useful to secure a convition.

OT: When somebody says "Nothing" when theyve been making it very obvious that there IS a problem. I hate all things passive agressive - and that one takes the chump.
