There's more to just walking forward in the Stanley Parable, it's a puzzle game in a very loose sense of the term. You seem to have some kind of chip on your shoulder though, what's the beef?major_chaos said:Challenge,a failure/win state, puzzles, combat, platforming, minigames, ect. or any combination of the above. I'd like you to do so.
You misunderstand me. I was saying the game sounds like wank, not the person I was quoting. I have never enjoyed a game that people hype up as being a "deconstruction". As a recent example: everyone was briefly infatuated with how Spec ops: the line "deconstructed" the military shooter, and I couldn't get a single drop of enjoyment out of that game.Phrozenflame500 said:Oh come now. I don't really care if you buy the game or not, it's your loss, but don't go all "haha you used a big word nerd". It's not conductive to anything and really doesn't help your case.
Because if devs have the mentality of "everything is a game" leads to stuff like Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs. Where the developers can take out most gameplay features of AN EXISTING game, will still sell it like one, and people will still defend it to the death because it's trying to tell a story.GoaThief said:You seem to have some kind of chip on your shoulder though, what's the beef?
Wait, did you actually buy and play the game then? If not, your first sentence loses all validity.gavinmcinns said:This.. thing.. "game", is a gimmick that exhausts it's novelty in about 5 minutes. If you want to pay 12 dollars for that, go ahead. But I think it's stupid.
No, I watched it on youtube, are you telling me I lose something significant from not playing it myself? Because if I bought and played it right now, I am literally 100% positive that I know what my reaction will be. Because I am good at judging quality.bluepotatosack said:Wait, did you actually buy and play the game then? If not, your first sentence loses all validity.gavinmcinns said:This.. thing.. Oh, this absolutely is fun; you just need to be able to get said fun out of activities that aren't common in the FPS genre. Stuff like standing around, trying to subvert the plot and clicking on everything because you can. The trick is that Stanley and the Narrator aren't aware of the player's involvement. One of the better endings can be reached if the Narrator realizes you aren't Stanley, but rather a person playing as Stanley.ShinyCharizard said:Eh not for me. I don't care for these "artistic" games and the like that attempt to subvert the medium. I'd rather just play a game that is actually fun.
Says someone who hasn't even played the demo for the HD Remix. The original is made up of Half-Life 2 elements because of the designer's lack of modding knowledge, while the new version features more branching paths and entirely new art assets.gavinmcinns said:So no, not tasting the crap does not invalidate my opinion that the dog just shat on your porch.
I think you watched a playthrough of the free mod. The recently released version has a lot more shit, is much prettier and more detailed, does not contain the first level of Half Life 2, is generally better in every conceivable way, and I think totally worth it. You may not think it is worth it, but I am enjoying every second of it.gavinmcinns said:No, I watched it on youtube, are you telling me I lose something significant from not playing it myself? They didn't even make their own maps ffs. They recycled entire sections from half life 2, to no witty or clever end. And they want to charge for this shit? It's lazy and cheap, a silly gimmick from a fan of that will ferrell movie that was based on some book I never read. Stranger than fiction I think it was.

You are right I think, are there any real improvements from the free to the paid? How long does the experience last and what have they changed.thatonedude11 said:I think you watched a playthrough of the free mod. This isn't a game everyone will enjoy or appreciate, and that's just fine.

More a dig at video game narrative structure and the place of player agency in game narrative, accompanied by a narrator with a soothing voice and predilection for sadism.LetalisK said:...is it a creepy horror game? If the best parts of the game are something that I can watch on a YouTube playthrough, then it isn't a good game and I'm not gonna spend money on it.Ugh. These are painful to read. Hell, you are the people that need to play it the most--the point is to deconstruct what is and isn't a game, and both of you have very rigid, close-minded definitions of what a game is. Not to mention that what you're basically saying is, "Why go to the zoo/museum/art gallery/theater if I can see it on YouTube?"major_chaos said:Yea no. There is a very long list of things I would consider spending $12 on before a game with no actual gameplay. If this is the posterboy for the whole "gamez are art" thing I think I'm perfectly content with games not being art.
Then this begs the question. Did you reach Heaven?bluepotatosack said:I was turning off computers like a mother. Until... "Input received."
The paid version is significantly improved from the free mod. It looks much, much better than the original for one. There is also a lot more content, with more endings, longer playthroughs, secret endings, and just a lot more little things you can find in the environment. I haven't gotten all of the content, but I've heard everything from 2 to 5 hours of content in the game, which may be a little on the short side, but you can always pick it up in a sale later if you want.gavinmcinns said:You are right I think, are there any real improvements from the free to the paid? It's patently not an hour long, I put four in during my first session and I've still not seen everything. Check the hours linked from my Escapist profile. The Lugz said:the bottom line is simply, this is a 1 hour long game
