The world is dying

I never understood the desire to believe in the end of the world. It's been around for millennia (the idea, that is), and it hasn't happened yet. I suppose it's almost a mark of maturity when one grows up enough to learn that nothing lasts forever, but it somehow seems arrogant to me to fantasize about the end of the world.

Why?

For the same reason it's arrogant to think that a special Creator built the world just so you could go to church in it. To believe that the end of the world is going to happen in your lifetime is to believe that this generation, the one that invented decent clothing and music, not to mention sex of course, is the ultimate, the pinnacle of history. Everything else was leading up to THIS world of which you are a member and there can be nothing after. How could there be? YOU won't be there. Silliness.

Bad things will happen now and then, the population will reach a peak, wax and wane and go through statistically predictable changes that certainly feel like the end of the world for the single data points involved. I'd like to think that eventually we'll begin to spread slowly but surely through space, building our own inhabitable planets as we go until we speciate due to simple reproductive isolation and varied selection criteria. At some point people might not be recognizable as people any more. I guess that's the end of the human world, although nobody'll notice its passing.

It's hard to make a movie about that sort of thing though. There'd be too much math involved in a universe like that for even Nicolas Cage to do.

are you mental? it is so possible for us to destroy the earth. we don't have to exactly make it blow up, we can just make life uninhabitable.

Humans are a species, not a race.
And all things die when they can't adapt, that's just how it is.

The world however, is kinda mineral-based, so it's not exactly alive to begin with.
you know what im saying....this goes for all of you picky bastards

No we can't.

At the very best we could make the surface uninhabitable for "higher" life-forms. In order to wipe out all life we would need to actively be trying to do so and we would probably require means we don't actually possess.

Oh, it'll happen someday, [a href=http://qntm.org/?destroy]somehow[/a], and there's not really much you can do about it.

Me, I'm taking the pragmatic approach of sitting back and seeing what happens. It's going to be a hell of a thing to watch no matter what gets us.
Me too, and hey at least we can say we saw it to whoever's left.

Well, i give us until 2040. I cant see us surviving until shortly after then, and it will be a miserable existence.

How we go out... nuclear war, super virus, or a new way of applying stupidity that we haven't found yet.

Then again, I don't plan on living beyond 2033 at absolute maximum, so I wont know if I'm right or not.

Meh, if anything happens, we have technology on our side.
Turn to the machines! they will protect us.
I know which side I'm joining. The omnissiah can always use more Tech-adepts.

what the fuck did I just say?!!

yes, I don't want the world to end. I want the Terran Empire to exist. and dominate the universe. hehehe. But that will require unification to accomplish.
You tech priests are all greedy bastards, keeping your secrets to yourself, worshiping Xeno Gods! Inquisitor damn you.

Sorry for derailment.

Anyway, what is the question? What would I do if the world died? IDK, try to live best I can in the situation, really depends how it ends.

A couple of point, most have already been made but still:
1) The world isn't alive.
1a) If it were it would take more than anything we as humans are capable of to kill it.
2) Destroying the planet is pretty much a sun expanding/exploding thing only. (or possibly a Deathstar...)
3) Destroying all life, again not something we can do.
3a) Destroying all humans, we can do that, barring a full out nuclear war this is very unlikely. Global warming is not going to kill all humans, maybe two thirds.
4) If all humans are dead we won't be there to notice, so why worry. The thought of humankind living out the end of the universe is actually much more depressing.
4a) As long as you don't procreate you don't have to worry about anything happening after you're gone.

Not only a Tech-Priest, but an Imperial Terran! ha! Let the Inquisition deal with that!
And I don't worship the Xeno Gods... even if I was seconded to the Orfine Alliance... and.. wait... their leader was God-Emperor Womble... dammit, you got me there... turns out I do worship a Xeno god...

I try not to think about it. Thinking about the fact that we are slowly killing our planet is something that would greatly depress me, so that's why I see no point in considering how/when it will end.

Humans don't really like to think about their own mortality.

Honestly, if I die before the world does... I don't care. I just have to make it through.

It's free to die after me though...

Random chance will get us.

Unless we spread out into the solar system, and then the galaxy and finally the multi-verse we will always be vulnerable to the random chance element. Something completely unforeseen just popping up and saying 'you go byebye now.'

My question: Why worry about it?

Bull....shit, by poluting the earth to mutch we can cause the ozone layer to rip and the sun will make damnsure to melt the icecaps and make earth to hot to sustain life.

December 2012

Solar System, all planets in allignment, good chance for a Polar Shift, which would be devestating, not to mention it would mean electricity wouldn't work, which means no internets, and who wants to live in a world like that anyways?

Ha ha every generation feels like theirs is going to be the one to see the world to go. Nothing changes. Save for maybe capacity.
