The worst game of the year

Duke Nukem was awful. I could have forgiven the dated gameplay and frequent lengthy loading screens if the humour wasn't so damn far off base. I know Duke is rude and crude, but every piece of dialogue in DNF was forced and just tacky. My favourite part of that game was fishing a turd out of the toilet and repeatedly hurling it against the wall just to hear Duke complain about it.

So, a viable metaphor for the act of playing the game itself, I suppose.

Brink, I payed sixty dollars too much for that sack of cr*p.
Interestingly, I have Brink on PC and 360 and if I think about it I actually only spent about two dollars. I got my 360 version free when a friend of mine bought it, hated it, and brought it over as a gift. Two weeks later I got it included in a steam sale as part of the Quakecon pack, which cost me $70 but included about 35 or so games, from retro to new starting with Doom and Commander Keen up to Brink and Fallout New Vegas.

Can't think of many that could be regarded as worst. I remember not caring much for Street Fighter 3DS. But L.A Noire was kinda bleh for me too

Hyperdimension Neptunia. If you even recognize my avatar you know my hatred for this game. This is the worst RPG I have EVER played. Granted I haven't played every game so I can't talk about Mindjack, DNF, Brink, and others but still I have my choice and I stand by it.

Duke Nukem Forever was poorly directed, poorly narrated and poorly written, but it isn't a contender for the worst game of the year. True Gearbox slapped their hangers in the faces of the fans of the series, but the game itself was mediocre.

I haven't played The Cartel or Mindjack as they seem really really horrible.

That said, I find this being one of the better years of gaming. A lot of quality releases have come this year.

Hyperdimension Neptunia for PS3.
Seriously.

Most boring turn by turn combat ever made, including the recent titles on the Atelier series, complete with stupidely huge arenas where you can't even see your party.
Horrible graphisms.
Horrible music.

Brink, DNF or Rage aren't even in the same league.

Brink was a letdown - poorly optimised, and came in a satured market against TF2, Call Of, Counter strike, etc, but it's not really THAT bad.
DNF was bad, but hey, at least there's the Duke in it.
Rage... well, as far as I know it's just a generic shooter poorly ported on PC, didn't play it.
DUDE. THANK. YOU.
I thought I was the only person on the entire Escapist who even knew its name. If I ever see you in real life (no I won't know its you and I don't know how I would anyway) then I will give you a hug then buy you lunch.

Seeing as the only game that I've played that's been released this year is Portal 2, I'm going to have to say Portal 2.
This, however, also makes it my GOTY so far as well :p

Worst game... uhm... fuck. I only got 4 new games this year and i haven't been disappointed.

Seeing a lot of brink hate though and that one Neptunia comment made me a little sad :'(
Wait how could that Neptunia comment make you sad unless......no. You can't possibly mean...you...LIKED IT?!?!?!?!?1?!!?!
Oh dear god what is wrong with you. I would suggest talking to a therapist very soon. I fear for your very sanity.
/sarcasm
Seriously though do you actually like that game? With every single infinitely horrid design choice they made? With the INCREDIBLY annoying main character? With the awful dialog and writing? With some of the ugliest graphics ever made? I can't wrap my head around how anyone likes it at all. I played the developer's last game Trinity Universe and while it would never get any awards from me I would only say its average but Hyperdimension Neptunia looks at every mistake in Trinity universe and makes each individual one exponentially worse. I honestly want to hear your counter argument since I still don't understand it at all.

Mindjack was pretty awful. It makes Call of Juarez: The Cartel seem incredibly entertaining.

On a more political side, Call of Juarez is by far the worst, definitely taking the prize for Most Racist Game I've ever played. It was still more than bearable in the sense at it was at least functional and had such ridiculously stupid dialogue and obvious undertones that it was almost fun for me.
Mindjack had a much less political point (except "corporations are evil!"), but was broken to the core, making it a much less appealing gameplay experience.

So yes, Mindjack was the worst for me. If I'm lucky, I might get my money back.

Well it depends, if Battlefield 3 is patched it may be up there for GOTY.

If not, then by default it is the worst as it barely works.
What system are you on? I have had problems connecting on the Xbox, but nothing really bad, it is on par with Bad Company 2 for me right now.

OT: I don't know about worse overall, but for me, probably Crysis 2. Not really bad, but boring. I felt really weak in the game for being a super death soldier. I stopped playing after the first alien fight.

EDIT: Also in b4 COD MW3 har har har.
I'm on XBOX, and I actually traded in Crysis 2 for Battlefield 3 :D

The Duke failed me.

But the funny thing is that I like it more then Rage, I REALLY hated Rage with a passion, REALLY three bullets to the head and then he dies, I have to buy Car ammo and do a whole load of shit to finish a short story.

This is why I prefer games like Jak 3.

This is almost impossible to do IMO.. bad bad games do not usually get to the public, or are reviewed so poorly that people stay away. So, this for most people is "worst game of the few they've bought" which includes games that really arent bad.. just play lower than expected.

That being said.. worst game of the year for me:

The Cursed Crusade - had such high hopes for this game and its a really bad, but playable game. Its just bad.. controls try to do too much and its really just a button masher - a really bad one at that.

Barely works? The worst that's happened to me is rubber banding every now and then but that usually fixes itself. They are working on server maintenance not bugs.

OT: Got to agree with Duke, that's the worst I've played.

Im going to go with Brink (only because I outrightly refused to even entertain the idea of Duke Nukem, because I somehow knew it would be pretty terrible). But I had such naive high hopes for Brink. It had everything going for it...Oh how wrong was I!
L.A Noire was pretty bad in a smashing-head-against-wall-out-of-boredom kinda way.
