There's no immersion in 3rd person games

The first few days I played Fallout 3 I could lose track of time completely, that's how immersive it was at the first playtrough.

The OP is a fail. Most truly immersive games are shot in 3rd person, simply because it is quite hard to empathise with a character who goes unseen.

I agree, well-animated games like Mirrors Edge do a great job of enhancing immersion by making you feel more like a person instead of an animated character.

Persona 3 anyone? Before I knew it I had logged in eighty hours into the game. Could not put this thing down for about a week and a half. I did take a break when I realized I was close to the end, I need to set aside some time and knock it out finally.

The perspective a game uses matters far less than whether a game world and the characters in it have personality. Most first person games lack either of these which is kind of sad really but is to be expected since the people making those kinds of games are absolutely terrified of making a game with decent characters for the most part. It has never really made sense to me how so many first person games lack even an attempt to make decent characters when the core gameplay across the board is almost exactly the same for every single one of those games.

This was admittedly a while ago (2002 I think), but I was pretty immersed in the first Ratchet And Clank game. When you're not being picked off by ten million snipers in Farcry, the scenery at least is pretty immersive.

I also second Vincent9mm, RTS games can be among the most immersive sorts of games around. Even the cheesy cut-scenes (love them or hate them) of the Red Alert series cannot detach you from the storyline.

i thought gears of war 1 and 2 are reli immersive when ur under ground cause there reli dark and things jump ou of now where at you
but gears 1 and 2 are a swithcable between 1st and 3rd person shooter for aiming

That is a very good point actually, but I get a different feel from movies and games, its difficult for me to compare the two experiences.

If immersion was decided purely from the perspective I'd say it is the other way around. FPP never really feels as if you see the game through your character's eyes, the only new game that has come close to that is Mirror's Edge. Most other (not saying everything) tend to feel like you're playing a very stale floating camera. But that's just my opinion ^^
Mm yeah that is a good point, it is only a specific few I can get really into.

I was immeresed in Dead Space.

Loved Mass Effect, if you don't love star wars, or star trek even a little(like me, patrick Stewart ftw!). You had to love the game for its aliens, its awesome side-quests, its short but sweat main game, but I didn't think it screwed up aiming.

Really? I have trouble getting immersed in First person games because you don't feel like a person. Mirror's Edge you do, so that I got pretty immersed in, but other then that... yeah, I prefer Third Person games.

Actually I find this the opposite, I can't get immersed in a first person game because the developers tend to slack on the story and gameplay to favor of the "It's you in the game" excuse. Third person games tend to put a little more effort into the main characters. Of course there are exceptions.

Anyone ever play Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth? Immersed the hell out of me. Far Cry 2 was good for that too, especially the whole 'impromptu surgery' thing, if you could call digging a bullet out of yourself with a knife surgery. However, did anyone else find it weird you could put out a fire on a car and then have it fully repaired by tightening a bolt on the front for a bit?

I can't play 3rd person, its too annoying, I like to see through the eyes of the character.
I've tried Mass Effect and Dead Space amongst others, and I just can't get into them. If your in a space ship or vehicle its ok, but there is no immersion playing in 3rd person.

The best are games which you can switch between the two but don't have to play as one.
If you don't get immersed in dead space YOR DOING IT RONG. I personally find sound to be a much bigger factor in immersion than point of view, and the sound design in that game was genius.

Point of view shouldn't affect immersion. If a game is immersive, then it is. I lost track of everything while play Final Fantasy VII, I get so immersed. It shouldn't matter how you see the game, just how much it can draw you in.

P.S: Immersion, immersion, immersion (just to say it a few more times).
agreed. If the game is made right, the viewpoint should be irrelevant. I can understand if you don't enjoy those as much, but you're really not talking about immersion. Some of the most immersive games I've played had no visuals at all.

I found myself immersed in Mount and Blade, although it doesn't really have a story (unless you play a mod for it, but since that's most people I guess that's not a problem).
I'm constantly growing my empire, seiging castles and the like, and I've almost put my perspective into that of my little on-screen warlord. :D

I was also immersed in Deus Ex, so I don't really think it has anything to do with Third or First Person View, at least not for me.

I know I'm kind of ressurecting an old topic, but since people alaways say "use the search button" I did. Anyway, I wanted to talk about this subject again. For I think that 3rd person games are actually a step closer to immersion than first person. And I'll tell you WHY...

1: Body Awareness. Sure, technically we all see from a first person perspective, but we are always quite aware of what is around us. The first person view cannot immitate this feeling you have in real life where if someone is to the side of you, you can sense that they are there through the CORNER OF YOUR EYE. First Person perspective constrains you to whatever the character is looking at DIRECTLY.

Third Person, especially Behind-the-Shoulder, captures this feeling precisely. You are not aware of what is behind you unless it touches you, you have a greater sense of awareness, and you still feel as though YOU ARE the character, as opposed to a camera stuck on top of someone;s head.

Anyway, tell me what you think.
