Sorry to go completely off topic in quoting your post, but something has been bothering me for some time now. In the emoticons you used, are the eyes pointing in the directions of the arrows, or the other direction?

OT: Great story! What a noble thing to do for... a thief?

Second, it's just a removable driver. You can use programs (even Windows has one inside the OS disk) to totally destroy the data. If he done this, there's no chance in hell that they'll find the guy. Or, if they are lucky, maybe they'll get a glimpse at his porn collection.
Oh yeah I didn't mean finger prints. that would take some EXTRA sexy forensics. But it would be nice poetic justice if they caught him through the stick. Or his computers Mac address or blood type or something

Damn, the thief must play a lot of Fallout 3 -- and takes the Karma metre with him into real life.
Yeah, because Fallout 3 *invented* Karma... It's not like it was an idea in real life before then... -_-

Hey!! I had just been playing Fallout 3 in preparation for New Vegas. It was the first thing which came to mind.

I suppose he could've played a bit of Fable too :p

This could only have been better if the Thief had left a business card too... Maybe next the Thief will sell the laptop, only to steal it back and return it all to it's rightful owner?

Awwwwww. That's strangely wonderful. The guy's still a thief but at least he knew what was important the most that someone can't just buy with money again, which is data.

Anytime I lose something with data I'm under the same mindset.

"I don't care if someone keeps the item, it'll suck, but losing that data is way worse..."

It not only existed but it was just as broken and incomprehensible in the real world too.

Wow.. Small world. This happened in a town where my girlfriend lives, and when she turned around to tell her mum she was told that she already knew, as it'd been in the local paper yesterday!

And to think I live in England, and this news comes via America too...

this story makes me happy. It proves that even a thief can think enough to realize that taking a laptop is just some money, but the data is irreplaceable. This is a heartwarming story about a thief doing the wrong things, but doing it right. Still a bad move on the professor's part.

it would be very crushing to have all that work stolen, but this makes me chuckle a bit. And, someday, might end up on one of those cop's and robbers shows, as the worlds kindest thief :)

Doesn't give me any more hope for humanity though, he still stole his laptop
people steal for a lot of good reasons.
I don't condone thieving but I understand why some very sane but desperate people would do it.

The thief must have seen how much irreplaceable data the guy had on his laptop and felt bad. Good for him. I guess?

I think that might drop your stealth score a little bit.
Let me ask you. Would you suspect such a fine gentleman of being a thief? And would you even be offended if you were robbed by such a thief?

OT: Well, it was nice of him... Kinda weird really. He stole the laptop, but was considerate enough to buy the professor a USB and put all his stuff back on there?
