Nintendo fans will never stop bitching about how Mario or samus, or even link need some kind of new storyline/tie-in/drop the series all together. Its the same thing guys, just like Pokemon. Giving a shit doesn't change it, move on and look at the elephant exhibit
Things in GAMING that will never happen?
An open-world Shadowrun video game based on the actual lore and not just the name.
(I am aware of the Kickstarter for Shadowrun, but I don't know what specifically the SR game will be about or what the style/genre is).

Samus is as old as they want her to be. That can be a woman in her 30s (like what I imagine she is in the Prime's) or she can be really young (early 20s like she is in MOM), so she is pseudo-immortal. All of the games are closely knit and it is 1 time-line, so yes Samus technically does have an expiry date, but they can choose to delay that as much as they want.
As for her actual aging process, she isn't really a normal human, so she can live for as long as they think they can get away with. They can also clone her, give her a daughter, or something else. Actually, Samus having a daughter (cloned or not) would be a very interesting development imo.
...Well, at least I'm not the only person who has given this thought.
Hell, I was doing my usual commute this very morning going "How would they continue Metroid if they made another game?" out of the usual mind-rotting boredom. (no, seriously. Every day, it's about two hours of dead silence driving through the country)
As for how Samus "passes the torch", having a child seems like a reasonable one.
Though that's based partly on how one interprets her personality from the other games (she was a silent protagonist through most of it).
The other possibility is dealing with another bounty hunter who doesn't know better.
The scenario I considered is this:
*Following the events of Metroid Fusion*
Samus is on the run, after disobeying her orders and deliberately destroying a black ops biological lab belonging to the Federation (the BSL station).
But the Federation is after her for another reason:
Having been rendered part-Metroid due to the events in Fusion, she is especially valuable to them and their research.
This being compounded greatly by the fact that she destroyed the remaining culture of Metroids with the BSL station.
So, the Federation needs to bring Samus in, and bring her in alive. Due to the extreme danger Samus poses in combat, the Federation creates a task force specifically to hunt her.
This task force in turn, hires several bounty hunters tasked with tracking and possibly subduing Samus.
(And here is a point of division for gameplay. The player can either assume control of Samus, or the role of a particular bounty hunter)
To complicate matters (and to keep Samus from basically tearing everone's shit up), Samus is becoming something of a predator due to the Metroid cells in her body. During her relatively short mission on BSL, this wasn't a problem because the X were the main food source for Metroids, and she had plenty to consume.
However, once on the run she develops a growing, insatiable hunger and will need to consume life energy like a Metroid to survive.
Complicating this is her Fusion Suit, which provides her with tremendous power and abilities that make her an incredible predator, but at a price. The more she uses her suit, the more she needs to feed, and the more violent and irrational she becomes.
On the advice of her sapient computer (I won't spoil Fusion here), she goes to an old Chozo holdfast to find both a source of food that won't threaten innocent (or civilian) lives, and potential answers to fix her condition (since she was in fact fused with Chozo DNA, which lets her use their technology).
One of the Bounty Hunters successfully tracks her to that holdfast and alerts the task force. So a dangerous game of cat and mouse ensues.
From here on, there are many MANY avenues to explore for gameplay elements.
1) The space pirates might get involved by intercepting transmissions from the task force
2) The player as the new bounty hunter, may be given choices in gameplay to hamper Samus directly, or try to reason with her. Samus isn't evil, and she was clearly in the right about the BSL incident, but the bounty hunter doesn't know that and she is slowly losing her mind.
3) The player as Samus will have to carefully choose their powers and loadouts for each area from Samus's selection of suit abilities. Samus has strong willpower and can control her hunger for a select few powers at a time (her willpower increasing and decreasing due to both items found while exploring and events in the plot).
If she takes too many powers for too long, her willpower decreases and she has to give into the hunger. If she gives in too much, she basically becomes an unstoppable monster and the bounty hunter has to either try to put her down or capture her.
4) Potential for literal multiple endings depending on the actions of the player.
-Samus might kill the bounty hunter.
-The bounty hunter might capture Samus through guile or reason.
-The bounty hunter might kill Samus (probably in self defense, though perhaps by Samus' request if she cannot control her hunger)
-The bounty hunter might even side with Samus and help her find a cure.
-Samus might find a cure and elude capture without the bounty hunter's help
I apologize if this sounds like a fanfic, but this started less as fanfic and more speculation of how one could tie story-elements and gameplay together. I'm a fan of story-lacing games and as old a Metroid fan as you will find.
Oooooo I like that. I haven't given it THAT much thought, but I've thought the same as you, "where and what can they do next?". The great thing about Metroid, is there are so many different games at different stages of Samus' life. She can be really young or moderately old, she can be coming back from purging Phaaze, or dealing with her new Metroid powers. And she could also just be her "normal" self on a new adventure in one of the large gaps of her life.

Yeah, we have already have her earliest full assignment in Zero Mission (the GBA remake of the original Metroid, and an awesome game all around), but due to her modifications, there's plenty of space for missing adventures.
Though after Other M, I have no idea which direction Nintendo will take Metroid.
Gamers will never all agree on anything. Actually that's too strong a statement, lets make one a bit weaker that will never happen: Gamers will never not argue over an issue about gaming. Actually that's also to strong: Gamers will never not argue. Nope still to strong: people will never not argue. There we go.

Wow. That realization affected me more than I thought.
The first Mercenaries games was ultimate! The sequel was, let's just say it, a bug-laden pile of excrement. No polish in that game at all and the multiplayer coding was horrendous. I don't want to say it's Pandemic's fault... but I don't want to fill these forums wiht more EA hate than is already on here, hah.
At least the Just Cause developers have stepped up to take the spot left open by Pandemic.
One day, EA CEO John Riccitello gets up, puts on a dunce hat and parades through New York in a clown car with the words "I AM SO SORRY" written on a piece of paper affixed to his chest. Afterwards, he holds a press conference to apologize for the fact that his company contributed to anti-consumer policies and the degradation of the gaming industry as a whole, and, as a result, he has elected to give the next game the company produces away for free.
Then, he decides to restart Pandemic, Bullfrog and Westwood Studios, and gives them carte blanche to make whatever games they want. Bioware suddenly learns that there is no corporate shoulder looking over, and decides to retcon the ME3 ending so that it ends happily, along with apologizing for their behaviour over the last few months.
Peter Moore gets a new tattoo on his arm that says "I LUV EA!", and gamers around the world suddenly look to EA as the mecca of responsible and consumer-friendly game publishing for the next few decades, ushering in a "Golden Age" for their company.
an online elder sr- oh yeah... well there will never be an ending to CoD or halo due to the never ending whatever the hell number they are on now.. i don't hate the games i just hate many there are..
Already got you covered with this one [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Columbine_Massacre_RPG!]. There are others, but that's always the first to come to mind because of the huge controversy over it in the news when it came out. That was a good time.
Parkour as a game mechanic that takes skill (does not involve holding down 1 button),in a deathmatch / open world environment at least after mirrors edge.
Developers will never realize that the argument "If I kill him, I'll be just like him." doesn't work if said pure, and non murdery protagonist had just slaughtered people by the thousands to get that far.
