I have been open to huge amounts of public idiocy due to the fact that I was in the Candian forces.

Story 1 - Hanging out at a bar with some friends, talking to some women when the subject comes up, what do you do for a living? my answer, I'm in the army. Her reply "Oh, so you kill babies." word for word. I was stunned, and just left. Had I stayed, I may have hit her in the face.

Story 2 - Again hanging out with some friends, talking to a girl I just met. She has no clue I am in the army but the subject of afghanistan comes up (my friends like to troll me and bring it up because they know how bad some people are informed about it) Her thoughts, "No one in the army even wants to go there and we are all afraid for our lives" I replied "Well, I happen to have heard that many people are eager to go overseas and help, and are not in much fear at all" She asks where I heard that, I tell her I am in the army, she shuts up.

Story 3 - Thankfully I was not there for this one, I was overseas at the time. Knowing that makes the random idiot here seem even more douchy. My grandmother was in a drug store shopping wearing a "support the troops" t-shirt. Some coward hippie douchebag decides that an 80 year old women was the perfect target for his triade of yelling and complaining that the fight overseas is unjust and stupid and the troops should not be there. If you feel that passionate about it, good for you. Write a letter, talk to your MP, stage a protest, I don't care. The soldiers do not choose where we go, or the reason for it. Do not yell at an old lady in the drug store because you can't get the balls to send your message anywhere else.

Anyways. Yea... I can write 1 and 2 off people being uninformed or idiots, but number 3 will always bother me, and so help me god I may have gone to jail if I was there.

Because I am a Christian, I am a bigot and hate science.

I am one of the most tolerant people that I know and I study science for fun.

Pretty much the one where you become a lifeless loser if you enjoy gaming, as if watching that retarded shit on TV is so much better(i'm talking about 'reality' shows, since thats basically the only thing they show these days).

In Finland, assburger is the new gay of general-purpose insults. Everyone hears it literally daily.

"You just choose to be depressed."

"You are selfish because you were the only child."

One of the saddest is being called gay for saying I'm not. What, would it convince you otherwise if I said I was?

I'm antisocial because I don't binge drink on weekends.
Forget the fact I'm usually watching a movie with friends or at a concert.
No, I'm not in a club, drinking alcohol, so I "don't get out much."

Actually, feminism is wide and varied, so yeah I do get to define what it means to me.
So, discriminating and assuming are fine if the person is a feminist?
Also, please point me towards the feminist political headquarters, because I've been a feminist since forever and its never been a place with certain agendas that everyone agrees on. It's more an exchange of ideas and an open dialogue about gender roles.
Yes,you can define what it means to you. What you don't get to decide is what it means to others, particularly when you're in the minority. I also never said "everyone agrees" with the agendas. I specifically mentioned the loud, effective groups, in fact. There is an established presence and an established impression of that presence, same as there are for the aforementioned political parties. If you're not "in line" with that presence, good for you, but you're not a special, unique snowflake that people should assume you disagree with the ones who give "feminism" it's (subjectively) negative image with no action from you. You take the name, it's no one else's fault that they assume that you run from the same playbook.

No its more like telling people you are a gamer and having to specify that you are not in fact a 35 year old virgin living in your parents basement who hasnt seen the light of day in ten years.
Exactly. That sort of crap is no way implied by the label, as opposed to the political labels above.

All I know I'm called is a nerd or gay for having glasses/not caring about how my hair looks.
Wait gay for NOT caring about how your hair looks?

Of the gay men I know the only stereotypical part they all fit is caring about how they and particularly hair look......

I guess I'm lucky because I've fallen in with a group of friends who don't judge me for anything that I do and I don't judge them in return. Being a metalhead? They're cool with that. Being a brony? They're cool with that. Being an agnostic? They're cool with that. Hell, they're cool with pretty much anything. If I told them tomorrow that I burned down a church / crashed my parent's car on purpose / starred in a sex tape they'd probably be cool with that to. Though I would never do any of those things.

But I have been accused of being suicidal / Satan worshiping / etc for liking metal by some other people in my graduating class from high school. By people who only listen to club music and the Top 40 radio and don't have a bloody clue what they're talking about when it comes to the music I listen to.

I'm sure people have accused me of other things behind my back but I don't really care about those people as they aren't my friends anyways.

I'm not sure they understand that just because I don't want a girlfriend right now it doesn't mean I want a boyfriend. Its worse right now because formals coming up so a lot of people are getting haircuts.
Hooray highschool.

Think you're missing the point of this thread.
I don't care why people make dumbfuck assmuptions. It's just annoying that they do. This is what the thread's about, not about who is responsible for the assumptions (hint- it's the person not using their brain and falling back on stereotypes).
And anyway, as I said before, you can think what you like. I disagree, but thats perfectly okay. We're both adults.

Er work hard I have found that if I just do the bare minimum people are much more pleased and praise me for my hard work ethic more than if I actually do work hard which is nice I suppose.

I tend to get a lot of contradictions as well like I dont ever go out and im going out all the time or that I look miserable and should smile more then get told im smiling too much. Generally I ignore what most people say unless I think they have a valid point.

Well actually in both cases its just people making assumptions based on extremely small but very vocal fringe groups. I guess going by your post its safe for me to assume you are a virgin, live in your parents basement and havnt showered in three weeks because well you are a gamer. You took the name so its not my fault I assumed to ran from the same playbook.
Except it's not the same. Not remotely.

There are no gamers saying "We're gamers, and we're all 35, virgins, and we live in our parents' basements!" That stereotype came from OUTSIDE the group. (For the record, I also never identified as a gamer.)

There ARE "feminists" saying "We're feminists and unequal laws are okay as long as they're tilted in our favor"[footnote]See child support, fathers' rights, no-fault divorce, domestic violence...[/footnote] and THOSE are the ones, "small but vocal though they may be" that are actually talking to the idiots who make the laws.

So no, it's not unreasonable to think that someone who proclaims "I'm a feminist" to be with the above group, since they are the public face of the label, unless they say "but not one of those feminists." If they continue to make that assumption AFTER you specifically say (and demonstrate) otherwise, on the other hand, then yes, they're being fuckwits.

"Unwilling to help around the house."

Facts:
If I refuse to help, I'm an ass. (even if I have a good reason to)
If I don't refuse, Im still an ass because they shouldn't have to ask in the fist place, I should help spontaneously.
If I do help spontaneously I'm STILL an ass because I'm "making a face" while helping...

This has been the pattern for years now, despite me pointing it out several times (all that ever got me was more bile). It has come to a point where my teeth start gritting the second I realize I'm about to be asked to mow the lawn (or whatever) because I already know I'm bile-bound either way. But ofcourse I can't let them notice because that would drop me straight into the "making a face" zone, awarding me an extra bucket of bile.

It also doesn't help that there's no official assignment of tasks around the house, enabling my parents to at any time, point at any random pile of dishes or whatever and go "Omg! why has this not been cleaned?? You should have washed this you lazy bastard!" Even if I had no way of knowing it was even there as I had not been in the kitchen all day.

Oh and since I'm a gamer I naturally get called an addict every other day. But that doesn't really bug me because it's always by people who know as much about gaming as whoever wrote this scene:

I quietly believe there is a god - specifically Christianity's take on it, therefore I am opposed to scientific progress, homosexuals, video games and new media, am a bible-bashing fundamentalist and probably have a boring, uneventful life.

I get that there will always be a vocal section of religious people who's ways of thinking are just backwards; same with people of political parties and agnostics, atheists, and human beings in general. And for that, I apologise on behalf of them, sincerely I do. But it feels like the whole world resents you for unobtrusively believing something they don't.
Take heart, almost half the world has just about the same branch of belief as you do. You should know though that while you have to deal with the extremists of a rather small group in the world, those in the small group has to deal with the extremists of a rather large group in the world. And even if all extremists are just the worst each group has to offer, the latter is quite a larger ammount of people. As such they tend to create more extremists of the other ilk that bashes the larger group out of self-defense.

Also Internet. Very normal people can turn into beasts on the internet. I have yet to meet anyone bashing religion, and only a very few bashing non-religion in real life. So if its the internet you are worried about, you shouldnt be. Because very few of the people bashing religion over the internet actively hates religious people, they just hate religion and those who claims to represent them.

I apparently make a face when told what to do even though I know for fact I don't since I can y'know, control my face.

And people say I don't like anything. They get this idea because they don't understand you can criticize something you like or have no real standing with, just because I have a problem with something doesn't mean I hate it.

I'm French therefore I eat frogs legs, snails etc. This doesn't really bother me though, it's just a bit of banter. I think the stuff I tell my Lebanese friend sometimes is probably worse...

I have actually eaten snails once though and they were quite nice. They're pretty bland, it's just the garlic sauce all over them that gives them the taste. And to be fair, you go into French supermarkets and the stuff they have available there you'd never see in a supermarket in the UK. Pigs hooves, that kinda stuff. Everywhere.

Cos my internet is crap, I get blamed and called selfish for the whole system slowing down cos two people being on it in this house at the same time can slow it down, therefore I have shitloads of pages open and am intentionally slowing everyone else down.

I listen to metal therefore I listen ONLY TO METAL. People get surprised when they find out I listen to Sigur Ros, Burial etc.

Being accused of having a superiority complex. Heard this a few times actually. Probably cos I don't talk much and people assume it's cos I feel above them. My brother and I both get it from my Dad, who himself can be one of the most controlling and arrogant people ever. And my brother is the shyest and most introvert person I know. More than anything, it's just guilt tripping.

I'm a girl gamer, therefore I must be doing it to get guys attention! Though on a rare occasion I get told that because I'm a girl I must be terrible at games.

I've also been accused of being boring because I don't drink much, I don't do drugs, I don't smoke and I don't do nightclubbing, I don't go out partying every night like everyone else supposedly does.

Also I've heard that because I'm a girl I'm not fit to discuss F1 and football. This has happened a number of times with the neighbourhood I'm in.

Edit: also I'm antisocial or "don't get out much" because of not partying every weekend. If I sit at home with friends watching a movie or having a nerf gun battle, that's "not getting out enough"

Just because I have a small circle of friend doesn't mean I am lonely. I keep in touch with my closest friend on a daily basis and fact that I had to take a two hour train ride just to meet up and hang with my best friend for only for a few hours shows I will go to great length to stay friend with him.
Beside I prefer quality over guantity when it come to friends.
