I always enjoy your reviews, and these certainly intrigue me. If I get the chance (and remember) I will have to look these up.

Ooh! Added to queue and I can actually give this a watch today. I have a couple Japanese horror films to watch now. It's time to sit back and be terrified!

If you are watching it today, then you must get back to me about how it was!

I am curious!

Ah yes. This film.

To clarify, me and Hub watched this together when he came over to my house a couple of weeks ago.

It was one of the more disturbing films I've watched recently, but the interesting thing is is that what gore there is is quite underplayed, yet it manages to be more disgusting than most standard gore films, simply due to its content.

There are scenes in this film which have grossed up people I know for a fact watch the bloodiest of movies with ease, particularly in the first one.
Hi there!

Yeah, that's me.

It was a great film collection though. I think my favourite was probably the second, Cut. It was so unbelievably tense, yet somehow still believable.
Wait, you two actually know each other? That's... interesting. I just never really thought that anyone on this site had met in real life.

Why can't Western horrors be nearly as good? For every remake of a classic horror made I will cut off a finger.
Do that and chopsticks will become obsolete.

I love Park Chan Wook, 'Old Boy' is one of my favorite movies ever and 'Lady Vengeance' was gloriously horrific.
To prove my point: They are totally making a remake of Sympathy for Mr Vengeance.

Prepare your straw.

I will! I am also going to watch something called Pulse by director Kiyoshi Kurosawa.

If I am not catatonic with fear when I am done, I will tell you all about it.

Wait, what? Seriously? Hopefully it'll never get off the ground like the Oldboy remake Steven Spielberg and Will Smith were planning *shudder*.

I am very protective of Park-chan Wooks Vengeance Trilogy.
Apparently, Warner Brothers acquired the rights for the film this year in January, and some guy named Brian Tucker is supposed to write the script.

I will actually cry if that ever happens.

The Speilberg ending:

It turns out he was imprisoned by extra terrestrials, but it's ok because they were friendly aliens and brought his wife back to life, at which point Oh Dae Su exclaims 'daaayum, man... those resurrection skillz be FRESH!'

Well, the were going to remake the manga and not the film, so it would have been a bit different from the Korean version.

Sympathy for Mr Vengeance however has no manga counterpart. It will be a straight up remake.

*cries*

As far as I can see on IMDB, he has only written a film called Broken City, which has a release date of 2010 and absolutely no other information on it.

That's not a great sign.
"Sir, we just acquired the rights for a very popular Korean movie! It has gained a lot of praise and could earn us money!"

"Hmmm, I like it... have a complete nobody write the script and shoehorn out some shit."

"*sheds single tear* Sir... you're such a magnificent man"

"I know *puts cigar in mouth*"

And so it was when the holy vengeance trilogy was sullied by hollywood.

They're going by the manga rather than the film I think, and according to wikipedia rather than the

incest reveal at the end, in the manga Oh Dae Sue was locked away for making Lee Woo-Jin cry when Oh Dae Sue sang the Korean national anthem

So, yeah it's going to suck. There will be a lot of slow motion and rising orchestral swells as Will Smith stands in a crowded street looking red-eyed from crying. For some reason.
They also wouldn't include the eating of a live squid.

Preposterous! The squid eating was one of the most important scenes in learning about "Monster" Oh Dae-Su!

It's alright, early experimentation with Edward Scissorhands has gone well.

How dare you put the world in danger by putting so much awesome in one house! It's very irresponsible of you two!

Always wanted to know though, does hub flash in the flesh?

On topic. sounds good, I know for a fact old boy is a fucked up film and while that title might be glued onto alot of films, this makes the devils rejects look tame.

A guy watches a brother making moves on his sister then I assume he blabs it to the whole school who then mock the brother and sister (I missed a bit of the film, thats why I put assume).

So this brother grows up to be a millionaire (or atleast very powerful) and kidnaps the guy who blabbed the incest and brain washes him while keeping him locked up. After a few years releases him and when he hears certain things he does something or makes a connection to something.

So the brainwashed guy who knows nobody or anything meets a girl and they get on etc then fall in love and she loses her virginity to him. The guy is kidnapped again by the same bloke and tells him he just did his daughter and threatens to tell the daughter the guy is so desperate not to let this happen he acts like a dog and cuts his own tongue out. If I am wrong make the corrections yourself.

So I assume these films are just as sick. By the way whats with eastern horror films and little girls with black hair?

That's a very... strange summary of Old Boy.

But I shall clarify somethings.

Oh Dae-Su doesn't actually say anything to the school at all. The only thing he does is tell his best friend about it before leaving, who then proceeds to tell the entire school.

But wait, why would someone be so obsessed with getting revenge on Oh Dae-Su when all he did was say one tiny little thing?

To that question, I echo the statement:

"Be it a rock or a grain of sand, in water they sink as the same."

Woo-Jin's whole plan is to make Oh Dae-Su into a monster, a monster who's only goal is revenge. When he has completed this, he will set a chain of events in motion, letting Old Boy find old friendships, new love, and a shot to get revenge.

And then he pulls the rug. His friend is killed, his lover turns out to be his daughter, and Oh Dae-Su's revenge story turns out to all along have been Woo-Jin's revenge story told in another perspective. He's played Oh Dae-Su so that when he finally confronts Woo-Jin, everything he lives for, everything he has left in his life, is shattered in one single blow. For that is true revenge.

Anywho, great review. I've actually never heard of this before so I'll have to check this one out.

Okay, I just watched it. So, impressions.

Dumplings - ew. I'm going to be hearing that sound of chewing in my head whenever I see people eat dumplings from now on. Put me right off my lunch it did. The Foley work on that was excellent, in that it disgusted me wholeheartedly. Especially the little crunches. Blurgh.

Cut - I like your comparison to Saw (I never watched any but the first). It did feel like a less contrived version of that story. I liked the ending, but there was a point in the middle when the director starts this little speech that makes me think, "Ah, now this is interesting. Where will they take this?" I wish they had explored that idea a little more. Killers like the bad guy in this want a certain reaction. I would have found it really interesting to see what would happen if the Director denied the killer his reaction.

Box - this was a mind fuck. The ending was really great. Although I was really disturbed by the first two, this one was perhaps my favorite. It managed to capture that dreamlike/nightmare quality very well.

Now I need to take a break before watching Pulse. Thanks for the recommend. I love smart horror like this.

I too am very fond of the sound-effects and how they are used. Especially when it ends with a fade to black, and all we can hear is the crunching sounds over and over.

And the bathroom scene. Oh god the bathroom scene.

That is a fair point. How would the killer try to torment him after the first way is rendered pointless? I don't think the Killer would be satisfied until the person on the couch was dead, and since he can't do it himself, he would have to figure out some other way. Perhaps do a similar trap with the actress from the movie.

Although had he done that, we would have walked into full-length movie territory, and I'd rather have this as a short film, if only for the novelty.
Box - this was a mind fuck. The ending was really great. Although I was really disturbed by the first two, this one was perhaps my favorite. It managed to capture that dreamlike/nightmare quality very well.
The final scene with her just looking out of the balcony door completely caught me off guard. It was a very poignant scene, one that just leaves you with a "... woa" expression after the movie is done.

As for picking a favorite, that is a tricky question. I like them all a lot, and they all leave different impressions.

I think I'll go with Cut on this one, mostly because it feels so refreshing to see such a premise executed well.

Hubilub, you've piqued my interest in these movies, and since Netflix has them on streaming, I think I'll give it a whirl later tonight.
