If we're talking about this from a cultural impact or popularity perspective, the hands down winner would have to be World of Warcraft. Though I don't play it myself it has simply owned PC gaming for most of this decade.

I can't overlook Half-Life or Halo's contributions to gaming in this decade either.... there are too many good candidates but if you're going to single out one game regardless of genre or platform it has to be WoW, you can't find another game that had more of an impact or a fanbase.

As for my personal favorite, I remember
when Shepard comes out from under the rubble at the conclusion of Mass Effect
saying out loud to no one in particular "this is the greatest game I have ever played".

I think it could be any NUMBER of things.

The game of the decade could mean how popular the game was, in that case it would be a close run between:
-Gears of War 2
-Halo 3

These games had very long lines and millions of people bought them. That right there could make either one of them the game of the century.

2000: Majora's Mask
2001: Super Smash Bros. Melee
2002: Metroid Prime
2003: Zelda: WindWaker
2004: Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
2005: Tie between Resident Evil 4 and Shadow of the Colossus
2006: Twilight Princess
2007: Super Mario Galaxy
2008: Super Smash Bros. Brawl
2009: Not sure

Overall, Twilight Princess is my game of the decade. It gave me everything I wanted in a Zelda game, and then some

Fixed.
Hahahh you make a good point.... The Wii itself has brought about a bit of a cultural shift, but I don't think it's impact is as big as WoW's, especially not now that the system is waning.

2000:pokemon Gold/Silver Version.
2001:Halo:Combat Evolved.
2002:The elder scrolls 3:Morrowind.
2003:Beyond Good and Evil.
2004:Fable.
2005:Shadow of the Collosus, with Psychonauts coming close second.
2006:The Elder scrolls 4:Oblivion.
2007:Bioshock, Halo 3 and Portal are tied, that year was too good.
2008:Fallout 3.
2009:So far, inFamous, but I'm pretty sure either ODST or Uncharted 2 will take it's throne.

And My game of the decade so far........Fallout 3! And I think there's a good chance it'll hold it's throne untill the end.

Well, I don't know about the industry as a whole, but these are my games of the decade:

2000: Baldur's Gate II (alright, this one was close, as Deus Ex came out in the same year, but ultimately Baldur's Gate the spot because the story/characters were superior, the modding community is still active, and it's one of those few sequels that actually managed to improve on the original)
2001: Silent Hill 2
2002: Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind (again, this one was close, just inching out Splinter Cell, but I think that series really topped out at Double Agent, while Morrowind is easily the peak of the Elder Scrolls series)
2003: Knights of the Old Republic
2004: Half-Life 2
2005: Shadow of the Colossus
2006: Splinter Cell: Double Agent
2007: Mass Effect
2008: Gears of War 2 (this was tough not because there were a lot of games I liked, but a lot that disappointed: Fallout 3, MGS4, Prince of Persia, etc.)

I'm reserving judgment for 2009 until after I've played Arkham Asylum and Dragon Age: Origins.

Hmm... that's really tough to say...
I'll try to do one of your list things.

2000: Chrono Cross (which had its Japanese release date in '99, but was released in North America 11 months later)
2001: Conker's Bad Fur Day
2002: Neverwinter Nights
2003: Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy
2004: Stat Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords
2005: Shadow of the Colossus
2006: Final Fantasy XII
2007: Mass Effect
2008: Castle Crashers
2009: I honestly haven't played anything from 2009... I can't afford anything.

Scribblenauts. I don't care that is hasn't come out yet. You can have a dingo eat a baby or have God fight Cthulhu. Instant win. That of course is sarcasm. I'm looking forward to the game, but I doubt it will be game of the decade material.

I would honestly have to say World of Warcraft. Even as someone who has barely played the game, I can recognize that not only was it a great game (still the best and most well-polished in its genre), but it has massive lasting potential and popularity, and its influence in the gaming community can't be understated.

Game of the Decade for me is a tie between Star Wars: Knights of The Old Republic 2, Jade Empire, and Mass Effect. Yes they are all Bioware games, but they show the progression of evolution to hopefully badass games such as Dragon Age: Origins, Mass Effect 2, and Star Wars The Old Republic!

2000 ? Baldur?s Gate 2: Shadows of Amn
2001 ?Final Fantasy X
2002 ? Neverwinter Nights
2003 ? Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (Runner Up: Disgaea)
2004 ? Rome: Total War
2005 - Star Wars: KotoR2
2006 ? Suikoden V (Very closely followed by: Medieval 2: Total War and Disgaea 2)
2007 ? The Witcher (Runner Up: Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer)
2008 ? Sins of a Solar Empire (Runner Up: Mass Effect)
2009 ? I?m hoping that it turns out to be Dragon Age: Origins

Game of the Decade? That's tough. Neverwinter Nights might win for sheer hours of gameplay and different ways to play. Since I'm still playing it semi-regularly, I have to give it the nod.

Well to be exact this decade does not end until December 31 2010. Year 2000 is the last year of the 1990'ies.

Sorry for not being OT but this general misconception irritates me a bit and it is too early in the day for me to remember which games I though were the best 9 years ago :)
Wait, what? Help me understand this, how is it that Jan. 1, 2000, 00:00:00(midnight) to Dec. 31 2009, 23:59:59 does not count as 10 years/decade?

OT: Right now, I'd have to say Gears 2 and CoD4 since those are really the only two games I'm playing right now. When MW2 comes out on 11.10.09, that'll defintely replace them.

2000: Pokemon Gold
2001: Golden Sun
2002: Kingdom Hearts
2003: Metroid Prime (followed by Golden Sun: The Lost Age)
2004: Ratchet & Clank: Up your Arsenal
2005: Kingdom Hearts II
2006: Shadow of The Colossus
2007: Bioshock
2008: Battlefield: Bad Company
2009: Prototype

And the winner is... Shadow of The Colossus!

I'm surprised it was this long ago these games were released.
