Wow, this is one of the first times I've seen APB mentioned, hope it still takes off despite that it's relatively under the radar. Looks like a great game.

and I played only one game of that lot, GTAIV, and that wasn't really good. If that was the most expensive game of all, I wonder, where is the moral lesson in that? :)

I mean, if people can produce games colossally better than GTAIV, and for the fraction of the cost nonetheless (in fact, there are even FREE games ultimately better than GTAIV), game designers should sit down, and take a good, hard look at what they done with their lives.

Money is not everything as this little list shows...

The list isn't particularly surprising. Some of the really expensive ones will be down to licensing music or cars [in Gran Turismo].

I think the only game I played and won out of those ten was Shenmu which I don't really remember enough to say if I liked it or not... I played the Too Human demo and it was ok, it didn't seem that terrible though. FF12 was boring and it didn't even have that many cut scenes compared to other Final Fantasys... Note, a big budget doesn't necessarily mean a game will be mediocre but this list does show that throwing tons of money at something doesn't necessary mean it would be good.

Only game that really used the money was GTA4. Fine game with few criminal flaws.

Not surprised MW2 isn't on there at all. They essentially just remade CoD4. Same engine, same length campaign, hell half of the weapon skins and sounds were the same. They just claimed it was "T3H GREATEST GAME EVERZ0RS" and half the world fell for it.

Its funny how infinity ward argued that since MW2 cost so mcu hto make, they should be able to charge more. Yet it does not appear on this list of much lower priced games.
I know, Halo 3 and Grand Theft Auto IV are like, 35USD now... and cost more to make than Modern Warfart 2 (Couldn't resist, forgive me.). Funny.

I got a laugh of irony at the list when the first thing that came to my mind in comparison was the similar theme in movies where often the bigger budget doesn't always equate to a hit, either. Out of the list, I played only two of the games (Halo 3 and GTA4), and I can't say I really saw where the budget for GTA4 was evenly spaced out through the game. The story was good, the gameplay was just fine for the most part, but I always felt there was something missing from the game that I couldn't put my finger on.

How much did Rockstar spend on the coding for those annoying phone calls you got every 90 seconds from someone wanting to go bowling, drinking, or to a strip club?! That was a spot they could have taken some money away from the budget to invest in the pole-climbing ability they talked about pre-release of the game.

Huh, I only held KZ2 in the context of being really quite expensive. But at least you can say now it was cheaper AND betterer then Too Human! Take that, haters.

Calling bullshit on Killzone 2 costing $45 million as almost every other source cites $20 million to DEVELOP the game, the extra $25 million is almost certainly from the worldwide advertising campaign, where it was usually co-advertised with the PS3 itself.

http://news.spong.com/article/12979/Killzone-2-at-E3-Cost-USD20-Million-To-Date

It's not fair to include ad costs for some games and not for others.

See for all the complaining people make about game costs they are mainly in places like EMPLOYING and HIRING lots of talented people for many man hours to make great games. It's not like it is being blown on expensive sets or resources but is being spent on PEOPLE which I think is the best place to be spending any money in an industry.

But on the other hand one can end up paying through the nose to get a 30 second TV slot and enough exposure.

Wow, I seriously hope Gran Turismo 5 gets released soon so they can at least make back a bit of that massive budget. How long ago was the prologue released? plenty of time for it to become a platinum title and disappear into the obscurity of time and memory. They really need to hurry up and finish it before its cost rises any higher. I suspect it's been perfectly playable for a long time now, and I applaud Polyphony for their devotion to detail and quality, but there is such thing as taking perfectionism too far.

Here's to a hopeful 2010 release.

Did not play any of those, doubt i ever will. Did not like GTA IV. Many users here share my feelings. I see a lesson to be learned here.

Con-clueh-shen: if i had $100 million, i would rather make ten innovative games. Hey, some of them may turn out to be successful!
