I'm wondering how many of the negative posters would have preferred if none of these games had existed however, along with stuff like Heavy Rain, God of War 3, other big budget stuff.
I'm not saying you need to spend tens of millions to make a good game, and it's proved that it's no guarantee, but I think big budget games help to push the medium forward.
As great as games like Peggle,Plants vs Zombies, and Geometry Wars are, I think there'd be a lot of complaints if the shiny new console they had bought was performing at SNES levels.
Also, didn't Braid cost the maker around $150,000? As wonderful as Braid is, I don't see any huge costs involved, so I'm guessing it's almost impossible to be a 'bedroom coder' any more, at least if you want to make it onto a multiplatform release.
TLDR version: I think gaming would be worse off for not having big budget games, although there's a lot of fun to be had at the indie end too.
I am curious however to know how much something like Peggle cost to make, and how much it's earned Popcap since release, but then there's hundreds of these games knocked out every year and maybe a dozen or so actually do well, and maybe 3 actually get to be a big name.
