I think you're right, it is 'Bald Mountain'. My favourite bit is actually the Stokowski Transciption of the Toccata and Fugue... though to be fair, they're all brilliant. Don't get cartoons like that these days! *nostalgic sigh* ...!!
I knew I forgot something (haven't seen it for a year :p). Toccata and Fugue was my other favourite cause I just love abstract/art house stuff. I just remember the musicians in the coloured lights, the composer in front of the big red circle and the light coming down near the end. Guess I need to watch it again.

Haven't seen it in... gawd, years, I actually watched Fantasia 2000 more recently (gotta love Rhapsody in Blue, and the Beethoven! good grief, flying whales!).

Yeah, that was the Toccata. With the whole piece being what I call 'intellectual' as opposed to 'aesthetic' or 'emotive', there's very little you can draw from it imagination-wise, so to emphasize the abstract nature of the piece, they highlighted the players, which was simple, yet quite clever. The Fugue was a bit trippy at times though! :D

Guess I need to watch it again.
You and me both, old boy! ^_^

And to show how old I am: to the video collection!

5. The Thing. Creepy, exellent effects, and good acting.

4. The 7 faces of Doctor Lao. A funny, heartwarming film about magic.
3. 2001: A space oddysey. It's just so much fun to watch!
2. The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. Epic... just epic.
1. Metropolis. What a film! Just watching the visuals alone is enough to make everybody in the room go silent.

In no particular order.

1. Clerks - I love this movie and I can watch it again and again and again without getting bored.

2. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers - Good action parts and I love middle parts of movies. Also, I told the girl (who's now my girlfriend) that I was in love with her while watching this.

3. MacBeth--Roman Polanski version - Just an amazing movie. My English teacher watched it with me, actually. It got me into Shakespeare and, well, writing.

4. Chasing Amy - Probably my actual second favorite movie (after Clerks); it's just so weird and messed up that it has it's charm, and that argument scene in the rain is great.

5. Star Wars The Empire Strikes Back - The middle part. Luke meets Yoda, and Darth Vader hasn't taken off his helmet yet; also, Han Solo gets frozen.

Last time I saw Fantasia 2000 was in 2000. The only parts I remember from that are Stravinsky's Firebird burning everything, and The Sorcerer's Apprentice because it still gives me the shits they repeated it.

Bought it on Blu-ray and DVD in one box not long ago cause I just had to. Don't judge me! Then I'll probably watch it straight away when I get my projector working again, which means in about a month, because it's too good for the idiot box.

Willy Wonka is the original, Charlie and the chocolate factory is the Johnny Depp one. Which I can't stand. Gene Wilder ftw!

Fun fact: the Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory focuses more on Charlie and his families characters, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory focuses more on Willy Wonkas character. :D

Also, you can't beat the music of the first one.

(this has been stuck in my head for a week. Now it's your turn >:D)

Older movies just have a completely different feel about them that I can't put my finger on, but I just love it ^_^

That's not to say I don't like newer stuff. (Star Trek comes to mind!)

Hmmmm, it would be easier if you let us rank our top 500 instead of just five awsome films, so I'll restrict this to films that haven't been named yet.

The Shawshank redemtion
The Blues Brothers
The Simpsons movie
Das Leben der anderen ('The life of others' for people that don't speak German)
Montey Python's Life of Brain

Others that could use a mention:
Snatch
Lock, stock, and two smoking barrels
The Pianist
1984 (the version with John Hurt)
The Magnificent 7 (though we have had 7 samurai mentioned which is where the story originated)
Shrek 2

Ach! This is such an impossible topic, I can hardly think of my top 5 movies of a particular GENRE most days. So, faced with an impossible task, I'll do the cowardly thing and slyly change my 'Top Five Favorite Movies' to 'Top Five Movies I've Seen This Year'. These are films I saw for the first time in 2011, and are still fresh in my mind.

5. Midnight in Paris (2011)- Woody Allen has crafted a wonderful little film here. Owen Wilson shines as an optimistic romantic whose desire to be inspired by Paris leads him on a fantastic journey through different periods of Paris' history. Allen's reflection on his own obsession with nostalgia is both charming and funny, and definitely worth a watch.

4. Mr Nobody (2009)- Get your head around this; a 118 year old man, who at times convinced he is only 34, recounts his life stories (yes, multiple) to a reporter in the year 2092. Based on how choices affect the outcome of our lives, the film explores a wide variety of subjects with this concept, inviting us to view the three major 'paths' of this man's life, flicking between the possible outcomes at a whim. A film that demands and deserves your attention, it left me wondering about my own life - and a film that makes me think like that is a film worth your time.

3. Drive (2011) - I loved this film. Atmospheric films have always been favourites of mine (see: The Warriors) and Drive was a golden example of how minimal dialogue can not just work in a film, but enhance it too. I've always thought Ryan Gosling was an under-appreciated actor, especially after watching Blue Valentine and Half Nelson, and here he's just as good - as the gifted driver who becomes involved in a 'deal gone wrong'. Opinions have been divided on this film (I think the trailer made it look too much like 'The Fast and the Furious') but I loved it.

2. Death at a Funeral (2007) - One of the funniest films I have ever seen. Ever. This story of lunacy surrounding a funeral just tickles in all the right places. It's every kind of humour you could ask for. It's witty, it's silly, it's clever, it's dry, and I loved it to bits. I can't really describe what happens without giving away jokes, so I'll just say that this would have been my film of the year, if not for...

1. Son of Rambow (2007) - This cross-section of childhood plays like a British version of 'Stand By Me' in its subtly poignant portrayal of the unlikely friendship between an overprotected child from a religious family, and a 'terror-child' whose family are almost nowhere to be seen. It's funny, sweet, poignant and yet subtle, never throwing the emotion too high or too in-your-face. The two child protagonists are phenomenal, the characters around them bring their world to life, and their story is guaranteed to make most of you smile. For me, this is what movie-making should be. Brilliant.

Pulp fiction. It's hilarious, exciting and unique.
Favourite quote: Does he look, like a *****!!??

Gladiator. It has your heart pumping in every single scene.
Favourite quote: Are you not entertained?

Monthy python life of brian. Funniest movie I ever watched.
Favourite quote: From now on you shall be called Brian that is called Brian.

Up. My favourite adventure movie of all time.
Favourite quote: Thanks for the adventure, now go have yourself a new one.

Dr. Strangelove or How I learned to stop fearing and love the bomb. It only has half a dozen good scenes but those are good enough for me to put it in my top five.
Favourite quote: You can't fight in here, this is the war room!

Please note, I haven't watched nearly all the movies I'd like to yet so this is an incomplete list. I also didn't include any movies that are part of a series, because that's not how movies work for me.

Also, my top 25 movies are so close to perfection in my mind that there is no "best".
