Hope the clock stops before the invention of iron, both bronze and stone could be fun.

Counting back? As in back in time? Well damn, no American Civil war then. I though that would be a decent era to do, not to mention a logical progression.

Meh.

actually, I think that would be awesome, though maybe have the hittites show up in the late campaign as a horde with iron weapons(they were the first in asia minor to do it).

edit: and OP, if you have't yet, why not put a link?

I'm really hoping for Rome 2, but seeing as how the hourglass is already at 1824, I don't think it's gonna happen, but I would also LOVE to see a twentieth century Total War game

(also, what's with all the countdowns these days?)

I think they should focus on Muslim expansion in their next title, so that's spanning from 630, the founding of Islam to maybe 1400, when Tamerlane's invasion really brings about the downfall of Islamic superiority. Sure, we may all remember that North Africa and the Middle East were major areas of spread, but let's be honest, who else knows of the Ghurids, or the Ghaznavids before them, or the Samanids before them, or the Saffarids before them? Territories in India, the Middle East, North Africa, maybe Spain were changing hands constantly. Islamic areas were highly unstable and extremely rich during this time, which sounds like clear Total War to me.

If their going backwards to a time before Empire and Nepoleon then I'd be very disapointed. The series is best when it continues forward.
Future: Total War

My money's on Vikings, or looking at the sand and how far it has to go, Celts, Jutes, Saxons? I don't know, but something really unorthodox and yet ancient would be cool.

I'm pretty sure I have, but here it is again:

http://www.totalwar.com/

It's just the hourglass on the front page.

http://www.gamestar.de/news/pc/strategie/echtzeit/2315188/total_war_7.html

And here's my source for why it's apparently a countdown for the time the next TW will be set in. It's in German though.

Edit: It's still stuck at 1824?!? WTF?

Thanks, I didn't see it the first time I read it.

I think it's going to go down at specific increments at specific times. They're, I guess, not cool enough to even make a real virtual hourglass.
