Now, I don't advocate piracy. I prefer to take no stance on it, but I actually debated about COICA with a friend who was certainly more politically-smart than I was. We both agreed that COICA seems quite hilarious in that it's almost unenforceable and would only be bad for America. After all, how can they just completely remove The Pirate Bay from the entire internet in the world as the bill proposes? Do they think Sweden would allow the United States to muscle themselves in in such a way that they believe they have complete jurisdiction to remove a site from the internet?

If they really wanted to deal with actual piracy wouldn't they just deploy a nice carrier battle group off of east africa with a marine expeditionary force for land ops?

I mean, yknow...pirates who actually hurt and kill people....

Hell they even do actual economic damage that you can show, with numbers and stuff relating to real world items, not the kind you pull out of your ass at a board meeting.

The american music industry loses 500 mil profits a month from piracy, really....?

Going to go to other countries to shut these guys down? Have fun. Stop trying to control everything already. I'll be here advocating piracy and Wikileaks.

Now I would LIKE to see that.

4chan vs The American Government. What a war that would be!

OP: Don't the Government have better things to do? Like catching terrorists and finally finishing that "war on drugs"?

So wait... are they saying that I'm unemployed because I downloaded a copy of Ass Blasters 9 instead of paying for it?

*gasp* Religion was right! God really does hate masturbation!

All joking aside, I'm rather indifferent about all this. I will aknowledge the futility of this effort due to the fact that pirates as a general group (like house burglars) will always find a way to circumvent everything. I've heard a saying that goes "No matter what you do, if someone wants to break in badly enough, they will find a way.".

I'm just hoping this doesn't turn into another expensive disaster like the "War on Drugs" did.

Tis a razor's edge my government now walks; between this and WikiLeaks, the temptation to erect our own version of the Great Firewall of China grows ever stronger. Be wary, my brethren, for the days of net neutrality and the free internet may be dying before our eyes.

The issue now is how provoked they feel, and how far they're willing to go. This indicates they're willing to go pretty damn far. More Anon-attacks on major websites and damning releases from WikiLeaks, and it wouldn't shock me if politicians started saying that China had the right idea with its Great Firewall. Which would be the death knell of everything folks in the states understand the internet to be, made worse if it is codified into law to punish people who subvert it. At the end of the day, unless the people in power can show restraint, we may be on the cusp of seeing what the Hayes Code would look like when applied to the internet.

YOU'LL NEVER TAKE ME ALIVE!

*aheam* but seriously, good luck with that.
pirates will always win. otherwise, most of Europe will never be able to see many of the popular international shows ever again (and no, dvd shipping is not an option with those prices).

Huh. And I predict Anonymous shitstorm in 3...2...1...
This is actually the first time I am like 'Hey, I am glad Anon exsists and those bastards can computer nuke anyone'.
I used to think very little of those guys, primarily because of how they chose to use their 'talents', but now they actually have a fitting target AND have actually chosen to go for it, they have gained quite a few points in my book. I simply sit back and wait to see what they do, I for one have trust that they will not drop the ball and their intentions seem to be in the right place as well. Let the computer nukes fly I say, the fireworks will be pretty ^^.

Never expected to see anyone stop piracy, but with google and microsoft on thier side I wouldn't be surprised if piracy soon becomes a thing of the past. Won't be surprised if it sticks around either, but if anyone has a chance, it's a google/microsoft coalition.

What a waste of the governments time, money, an resources. Piracy is going to be around for a long time. Long after this administration is gone. Rather see the government do something useful but I don't see that happening in the near future.

I agree with this being our own generation's McCarthyism.

On the other hand, I don't think internet piracy can truly be stopped. Cracked down, maybe, or slowed, but never stopped. I mean, the internet connects everyone. You can't possibly expect to stop every single person with a computer and an internet connection. Many pirating sites aren't even located here, at which point all you could do is decree a law for every ISP to block that domain, which would interfere with America's laissez-faire policy (hands-off, for the uninformed). Of course, taking control of GM proved that our grand ol' government doesn't have that policy as much, but if they hadn't taken GM then those idiots called businessmen that run it would have had to lay off all their workers - a substantial number.

ok, I went way off topic there, but I'm just saying you really can't stop it through force. Possibly by teaching kids that piracy is bad from an early age, but that hasn't stopped people drinking alcohol at a young age. I think all of you get my point.
Yeah, I get the feeling this might turn into the internet version of the war on drugs and given the way copyright law has been skewed and abused by the US government already I doubt this won't have negative effects beyond piracy.

Edit: Oh yeah, this probably won't help with internet neutrality either...

Just one more step on a globalized internet filter.
Christ at this rate we may all as well just move to China now, why wait for the west to turn into China in 15 years when I can start living the dream right away?
