this sounds like a bad joke, like when pepsi tried to buy the moon (actually happened). The internet doesn't belong to anyone, it's a global communication community. The US would have to get the entire world's nations to agree. Not only that, but the US jurisdiction doesn't extend to other countries. What are they going to do if someone in let's say...Australia refuses to shut down? Are they going to fine them? oh wait, you can't; that would cause an international incident. I know the US is aiming for world domination, but this is a bit of a leap don't you think?

i thought that the internet could no longer be shut off because there are so many servers worldwide... or something? You can only isolate areas. Of course all power around the world would do it, but still...

Lieberman is a worthless Senator whose only goal apparently is to get his name in the news one way or another.

*facepalms* I'm going to assume they mean well (though every time a politician mentions 9/11 I feel like they're a second away from lying for a good five minutes) but the internet is the closest thing we have to a free space for open exchange of information. Any government, the US government in particular, will mess the internet up through such far reaching control, or have they forgotten what happened when Pakistan blocked Youtube?

Looks like someone watched too much Eagle Eye and took the Homeland Security jokes a bit too hard.

They're going to hack into our cars and power grid! From China! We must destroy the internet!

You're pretty paranoid there I see... cyberparanoid.

But anyway, even if the US were close to war with China, shutting off the entire internet is still ridiculous. Pray tell me what part our dear Escapist has in China's battle plan? And this would seriously screw with other countries, something which frankly, the US has no right to do. Of course, living in the uk I know just how batshit crazy the US government is about their internet security: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gary_McKinnon

You missed the key word of my post: "Entire".

Basically, rather than taking out their problem on the internet the government could try upping the security.

The government is overrun with paranoia. I don't think they know how important the Internet is, even in our daily lives. Not to mention the outrage that would happen if the Internet was switched off.

Only someone as off his nut as Joe Lieberman would come up with this.

Do you see what you've done Connecticut? First you make your state impossible to spell, then you repeatedly reelect this clearly insane person.

Bad state! Bad! No federal highway dollars for you! Now go to your room and think about what you've done.

I can't believe I used to live in you. I feel like I need bath in a time machine to get the funk off.

I can see it be used like this:

"Mr. President! Cities on the West Coast have been bombed by terrorists!"
"Kill the Internet!"
no more like this
"Mr. President! It is Election session"
President: "Kill the Internet so my polls don't go down"

If I trusted the American government even to a tiny little miniature iota of a fraction of a percentage of a degree, I might be willing to think about this.
But at the moment the U.S. government has done more damage to the country than terrorism ever has, so... no.
