Ubisoft Predicts 3D TV For Everyone By 2013

Ubisoft [http://www.ubi.com] has boldly predicted that 3D television will be in "everyone's living room" by the end of 2013.

I'm an "anything can happen" kind of guy so I don't normally call out predictions for the future as hopelessly stupid, but in this case I'm going to make an exception. Let's cut to the chase: "We were the first publisher to create a proper 3D game with Eurogamer [http://www.amazon.com/Avatar-Pc/dp/B002EZOQZ4/ref=sr_1_11?ie=UTF8&s=videogames&qid=1278692669&sr=1-11].

"The truth is I think it is a technology that's coming. We can't ignore it," he continued. "It'll start slowly this year. But like HDTV I wouldn't rule out the fact that this will be installed in everyone's living room in three year's time, and for us to be in a position to have content that could really look absolutely amazing in 3D."

Seriously? Murray, do you have any idea how much this stuff costs? A 46-inch Samsung at Best Buy [http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Samsung+-+46%22+Class+/+1080p+/+240Hz+/+3D+LED-LCD+HDTV/9784693.p?id=1218173775280&skuId=9784693&st=3d%20tv&contract_desc=null] is currently on sale for $2199, with a regular retail of $2799. Do you want a pair of 3D glasses with that, so you can actually watch things in 3D? That'll be another $200, please. Oh, you have a wife and children? Some friends, too? You're not going to make them pay for their own glasses, are you? Because that's 200 bucks each, pal. Hope you've finished paying for that LCD flat panel we talked you into last year.

"For the naysayers, if you like, I would say, 'Just watch this space', because when you have global corporations like Sony pushing 3D as hard as they possibly can, Sky, equally, showcasing 3D content on TV, I believe it will become a much more important part of consumer electronics than a lot of people believe," Pannel added.

Sorry, Ubi, but I'm saying "nay" on this one.

Ubishit also said that their DRM wouldn't harm legal users and be 100% effective against pirates.

Maybe in 10 years... maybe! Unless the price crashes in the next year it just won't happen. The only people I kno who have Bluray are PS3 owner's so 3D not really likely

And lets not forget how alot of people just got into HD TVs. I just can't see it taking off until the cable companies start offering 3D networks.

Wow, do they expect me to pull the money for one of these out of my arse? I'm perfecly happy with my current HDTV that doesn't give me eye strain when i like to use it.

Please stop, 3D isn't great, it isn't immersive, it's crap. So long as they keep making games and movies in "2D" then i'm happy. Let all the weirdo's have their gimmicks.

I guess that Ubisoft need to spend all that extra money they scored from defeating all game piracy on something but not everyone has that much spare cash.

And the magic future 8n ball says... no.

This will not happen. This will not happen even in the farthest stretch of the imagination. My library literally JUST threw out it's VHS collection because people were STILL checking them out, even when you can get a DVD player for like $25 these days. I'm still using tube tvs because HD and blu-ray are far too expensive for my family. $600 for a tv with 2 kids in college? Not gonna happen. Heck, my tv was made out of wood until 4 years ago (my mom bought it before she got married 25 years ago!)

It's a nice thought but not grounded in reality. Normal, average people don't replace their electronics just because something is new and great. People wait for the price to come down and their old electronics to break to the point that they need to be replaced.

Yeah, I don't think so Ubisoft... I've expressed my opinion on 3D before, so I won't waste my time here, but I highly doubt that not only will everyone want to have a 3D TV by 2013, no where near everyone is going to want to pay for it and the stupid glasses. There are people who still don't even have HDTVs.

FALSE!
The correct answer was: 3D won't take off until/unless the price is way down and you don't need glasses.
Many people have HDTVs now because you can get a decent 40" for $600. Even less!
3DTVs? With those expensive glasses? No no, I don't think so.

Thanks for coming out, though, Ubisoft!
You've been a real champ.

See, I didn't even think of the cost of it when my mind said "No chance in hell". The fact is, that 3D is not as amazing as it was made out to be, for most it is simply a novelty that wears off.

It isn't like HD where it improves on quality. It's like the motion controller thing. Sure, some will love it, but for most consumers it was fun for a few hours and then it was just forgotten about.

And 2001: Space Odyssey predicted we'd have a lunar colony by now and launch a manned mission to Jupiter. And look how that turned out. :p

This article has strengthened my resolve against 3D. Also, I didn't realize Sony was pushing 3D that hard. I had come to understand that the Japanese and their companies didn't see 3D as being all that great. Maybe that's just in their homeland though. I only recently got an HDTV and it's not even a 1080.

Ubisoft Claims:GUARANTEED REPLIES IS GUARANTEED

In all seriousness, no, even if we eliminate the polarized shades.
3D is too, ludicrous...

1. There are people including myself who do not have HD TVs yet.
2. I think 3D technology gives many people headaches..
3. Are people really going to want to wear glasses constantly while watching TV?
4. the Whole 3D thing was a gimmick (among other ones) by the Movie industry DECADES AGO because of new entertainment such as TV. Many movies after the tech didn't use 3D effects so why they think that a recently revised gimmick is going to make a truly long standing difference now?
5. Are game designers actually going to be able to take any advantage of 3D TVs to make truly innovative gameplay designs?
