Ubisoft Says Gamers Just Don't Understand The Wii U

If gamers "don't get" the console, its the fault of the company that made the console. But I'm not going to take the words of Ubisoft seriously. They were one of the major sources of shovelware on the Wii.
What isn't shovelware these days?.

When did the bar for a piece of hardware get so high it reaches into space?.

No seriously how?.

The whole reason I'm not even remotely interested in the Wii U is that its hardware was obsolete on day 1. Just like the Wii was. So when the new consoles from Sony and Microsoft roll out (probably this year) this console won't be able to support third party games just like the original Wii, leaving them watered down or not even ported. Nintendo needs to realize that releasing a console only half again as powerful as its current gen counterparts when those consoles are eight and seven years old isn't going to work.

I get the point you're making, and with the way that the big publishers make games its hard to say what isn't shovelware in general. But I'm talking more about the kind of shovelware that the Wii was known for. Games that had flash games as rivals.

Games like Cold Stone Creamery. A game where you scooped ice cream and served it to people. Yum. With the Wii-Mote. Wooooow..

The kind of shovelware that tried to sell people the "fun" of working a minimum wage job. (That games' only saving grace was that it was $20.....not really).

See, that kind of shovelware was more rampant on the Wii. And Ubisoft was kind of the king. They did to the "exercise game" market what Activision did to Guitar Hero. They also made a few games in the style of plug in and play Fisher Price games for babies and toddlers. Ubisoft threw a lot of crap through the Wii. They were the only big publisher that could figure out how to consistently make money off of the Wii. They didn't scoff when their games didn't appeal to the Wii's traget market. Gamers may not get why they want the Wii U as a console. Maybe Gamer "don't get" that there's a chance to make more crappy "games" not that there's a tablet involved. I think that Ubisoft doesn't get gamers.

While I enjoy asymmetric gameplay (isn't that the heart of tabletop RPGs, after all?), I think the problem is that we're not seeing a lot of games that can both take advantage of that and not bring up the question 'why didn't they just do this on the Wii/Gamecube?'

The Wii was fine for casual entertainment, but very little asymmetric gameplay that I can think of comes off as 'casual' and the WiiU's other innovations don't immediately lend themselves to new and interesting gameplay. The Wii got away with it because it came in first with motion controls and even presented some games where they would be interesting to use (and wisely packed in a game dependent on nothing but its central feature), but the WiiU is going to have a hard time bringing the same thing to the table.

Hi, you must be unfamiliar with Escapist journalism. Take it with a grain of salt and never trust what the headlines say.

And check it against other sources too.

I come here for the shows and the relatively pleasant forum. Not the accurate and integral journalism.

Amen brother, to be fair though, Mike isn't nearly as bad as Greg or Andy Chalk.

OT: It's like Ubisoft hired a huge PR team, then locked them in the basement and don't allow them to contact anyone.

That is true but generally the escapist has a pretty sensationalist newsroom for itself and it can often be misleading and misinforming, especially when plebs don't read the report and only read headlines before they post.

Yeah Ubisoft pretty much did that, thats why Rayman Legends just got pushed back 7 months.

Its not that I don't get it, its that I do get it, so far anyway. See the problem is Nintendo is going to release the same games as it did before with new game mechanics and I've been tired of those after N64. Gamecube was pushing and the Wii made me say screw this. Also the fact that all the "hardcore" 3rd party titles are games I've played before. Lastly I've tried the system out with Rayman made by Ubisoft and personally its too convoluted for me to be bothered with it. The tablet controller is either gonna be forced and gimmicky from 3rd parties or great from Nintendo but I already explained my problem with that. So far I see no game making me want to purchase the Wii U and I've my sights on the PS4

Eh, it's on the same level as Kotaku in terms of credibility. So I always check the source, basically. More often than not the headline is reminiscent of tabloid journalism.

And the reviews? Don't get me started!

WELL? ISNT' SOMEBODY GONNA GET ME STARTED?

Reviews? Sorry I don't read bullshit. /joke.

By all means get started good sir, what about the reviews?

Most games journalism is tabloidy shit slinging really and it's kind of disgusting sometimes, it's all a rush to get the story first and get the most hits. I remember the Wii U launch and every review was fucking useless and barely contained any useful information, because it was a mad rush to get the first story, and then break it up into as many others as possible, to get MOAR VUWS!. Rather than be useful and informative.

Whats there not to understand? It's a console with a screen on it's big ass controller. The reason why i will never get one of those is simple: i don't like nintendos exclusives and having to look at the screen on the controller to manage inventory or whatever is probably worse than using a part of the screen for a popup window.

Any game site that gets a pre-release copy of a game to review is going to be unwilling to say anything bad about it. No pre-releases = less traffic to the website = less $ from ads.

Simple as that.

No getting invited to launch events/parties either.

TotalBiscuit summed it up nicely here.m

But seriously, for a great laugh, check out Greg Tito's 'review' of Dragon Age 2. "THE PINNACLE OF RPGS"

Thats about the jist of why I prefer my internet reviews to be more descriptive than critical. Tell me what I'm buying not how much you want to be invited to EA's next barbeque. I'd wager had Warfighter been sent out 2 weeks before launch for review it'd have garnered a more warm reception, by no means would it be getting 9's or anything because it's shit, but 7's rather than 4's.

Or Jim Sterling. I listen to him because he tells shit like it is and gives no fuck.

Or my own reviews. I trust those (; lol

Yeah personally I prefer TotalBiscuit's "WTF Is " series for showing me gameplay and explaining it. Rather than just me reading what the reviewer chooses to mention about a game.

Yeah it's why I quite enjoyed Blunty3000's Wii U coverage, it was very in depth and addressed things that consumers care about, it told me what I needed to know and addressed some issues that were worrying me.

As for games I tend to read up as much as I can about them and cross-reference a number of reviews and such. Unless it's an IP I adore then I may pre-order or day-1 buy. Sometimes that bites in the ass (fucking AC3...) but a lot of the time stuff is a safe bet (Pokemon or Mario are usually safe bets, CoD is a pretty safe bet too but thats not a day one buy or pre-order but you get what I mean, if I know what I'ma get for my money).

Every thing SkarKrow said, and from what I've seen in some forums, a lot of people were very disappointed with some of previous hardware, software, online connection and popular game titles on the Wii and just don't trust Nintendo any more.

Also, not every one likes the idea of looking down at the mini screen in the middle of the game. That turned me off as soon as I saw it, but thankfully that isn't for most games that I've seen.

I'm saving money and looking out to see if there is any games I really want on it.
Ehh well there's not many games at the moment and probably won't be until next year now apart from Pikmin 3, Wind Waker HD, Mareio Bros U and some unannounced stuff. Maybe Lego City.

Scribblenauts has been hammered back in the EU for some bizarre reason and Rayman Legends has commited retail suicide. Looking at unannounced stuff and the first party stuff from the recent Nintendo Direct for content.

The asymmetric gameplay isn't a bad idea if it's done right. It can be nice for smooth inventory management and such, but if companies do the Ubisoft thing and make me tap boards to unail them from doors in zombiu then they're doing it wrong. Of all ZombiU's features the touch integration is not a strong one apart from inventory management.

I like my Wii U but I'm suffering from early adoption and I can't hold the lack of titles against it. I can however get angry at publishers who delay stuff to die against GTAV.

Oh and if you stroke my ego please do quote me :3 I don't always stroll casually through threads.

Lol. I love your responses.

I guess it was most of the games I had some interest in that didn't require it, or maybe the box lied to me, I don't know. I went to the store and was impressed, that's all that matters.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind so much just using the gamepad if it was just to select things faster. I am a little curious about ZombiU still. I literally do a fair bit of research these days before buying games, it's a habbit that comes naturally to me now. It's just the need to make sure for what ever reason, even if it means going out just to test it.

Believe me when I say that the lack of titles don't bother me, as foolish as it sounds. I bought the SNES, N64, Cube, PSN and some other consoles (including hand helds) straight away on the first day, and all of them lacked games (except the N64 since Golden Eye and some other games kept every one busy). The WiiU is different though cause I became skeptical because the Wii found ways to annoy me, and I just don't have as much money at the moment. I want one, but at the same time I feel I should wait. It's a really annoying feeling. I'm very very sure that there are going to be some games that really interest me in future, how could it not? But I hope the gamepad is used the right way if forced.
