This should be for every game with online interaction.
Technically it is - as the article says, it's not cheating that is illegal, it's the use of a denial of service attack that got the cops involved. Doesn't matter what you're doing when you use it.
makes online sessions much better.

i wouldn't call a dos a hack or a cheat.. thats just forcing your opponents offline so your left with the lower skilled opposition
But if it's during a match and someone gets above you...

That's still the stupidest way to get even I've seen. You're in a damn gun game, just shoot the guy. (In game of course)

Or is this the new quickscope?

Except we know the police traced an IP, that doesnt really lie.
We also know they know how the DOS program was obtained so either they found it on his computer or he confessed.

Either way guilt is certain in this case.

Why can't the police come bust down the door of my druggie neighbors instead of messing with some kid cheating at video games.
I don't mean to derail but have you reported your neighbours? If you report someone for drugs offences keep a diary and evidence of wrongdoing for the police, drugs offenders are rarely just drugs offenders and the more info the police have the more likely they are to act.
QFT!!! I have this strange expression on my face whenever anyone says "oh, theres a guy down the end of my street who deals drugs"...FFS, report this to your local authority. They might not act immediately, but this is because they need to be sure about these things, and in the scheme of things, 1 suburban dealer ain't much. Were I them, I'd wanna try for the bigger fish too.

What is crazy is how easy it is to perform a DDoS attack. One simple command, repeated on several clients can be that effective..

Doing this is just being a douchebag. Kinda reminds me of a friend of mine who pinged his friend's router, made it crash and couldn't play for the rest of the weekend, which kinda sucked.

Im american. Im a pacifist. And every who knows me says im the nicest guy they know.
But anyone who ruins other peoples happy time ON PURPOSE shouldent have the right to live, let alone play a video game.

Im sorry if that comes off as mean, but im a bit old school on my feeling. A**holes should die, nice people should live, and everyone should know theyer place in the world. Mine is with the rest of the mindless drones at midlevel sales.
You're not a pacifist if you want people to die for cheating off a game.. A Pacifist is those who wouldnt use violence even in the face of violence. Going great lenghts to prevent violence from being used in pretty much any case?

CoD really is the new Halo, all sorts of crazies turn up and try to use everything they can think of to mess up the games.

But I am amazed the police does anything about this, I guess Activision has quite some pull.

God no. He hasn't had his day in court. Until he does, he is innocent.

Heavens. I thought The Escapist had better common knowledge than this.

I'll leave it there in the hopes someone else does it for me.
You realise that that is is the internet equivolent of saying WRONG YOUR WRONG BECAUSE I SAY YOU ARE!

I think you're taking "Innocent until proven guilty" a little too literaly,
The court has to not assume guilt until the evidence has been presented, we don't have to assume anything, also the evidence is pretty clear he is so being found guilty unless he hire Johnnie Cochran I guess.

Lol, when I read 'hacking' I was thinking 'geez, it's only a game - why are the POLICE getting involved?!'. I'm not sure DDoS attacks are hacking, really - there's no hacking into systems or software, just a lot of pinging...

Really? That doesn't sound like the sort of statement a pacifist would make...

So you can be traced and arrested for causing DDoS attacks? Someone should warn the idiots supporting "Anonymous" of that...

As for the Manchester Met - you'd think with the amount of violent crimes that happen on a daily basis that they'd not have time to arrest some little oik cheating at games... Mind you, this is the Police Force that decided to post every call they got for 24 hours on Twitter, after all...

Why in the hell would you activley want someone to be innocent of a crime (unless of course they are related to you), also hoping for somthing won't change the facts he either is or isn't guilty.
So you wander around wanting everybody to be guilty of crimes? Do you assume that every court case should have a 'guilty' verdict? You should definitely be on a jury, lol.

You should never assume someone's guilty until it's proven. That's the entire point why we have courts and law and (unfortunately) lawyers instead of lynch mobs. You know, to weigh up evidence and make a decision based on that in a proper way, allowing the accused to defend themselves.

Oh for fuck's sake
read this and pay attention

I DON'T "WANT" HIM TO BE GUILTY,
I FIND THE IDEA THAT SOMEONE WOULD ACTIVLY WANT HIM TO BE INNOCENT TO BE ABSURD!

I have said this numerous times, please don't jump to conclusions.

EDIT: Also, I shouldn't be on a jury?
The one I was quoting wanted the kid to be innocent that is every bit as biased as going in wanting a guilty verdict - Which I never claimed I wanted!
I am as neutral as they come I don't care wether he is guilty or nor if he stands trial it will be decided there and I'll still be over here not caring one way or the other.

Well, how it goes here is bit different... We keeps saying that everyone is innocent until proven otherwise. In reality it goes like: Everyone is guilty until proven otherwise.

You trying to imply that your way of thinking is better than anyone else's? Bit selfish I would say.

I hope he is guilty, and gets punished hard.
Am I stupid/immoral now? Are you the great hope of mankind's kindness? Am I allowed to have my opinion about him, without getting called stupid/immoral? Because, if he is guilty, then if you have accused me being a stupid/immoral when I was right all along, that makes you stupid/immoral for saying that I am stupid/immoral. But if he is innocent then Indeed I was stupid/immoral.
